Report: Mavs To Sign Campazzo, Luka Doncic’s Ex-Teammate

Campazzo joins the Mavs’ regular-season roster and reconnects with Luka Doncic. The Dallas Mavericks and free-agent point guard Facundo Campazzo have reached an agreement on a one-year contract, as has been anticipated for nearly a week. Campazzo completed his medical on Monday. Just two days before Dallas’ regular-season opener against the Phoenix Suns, the dynamic passer, 31, fills the final roster spot.

According to The Athletic, free agent guard Facundo Campazzo has agreed to sign with the Dallas Mavericks despite strong interest from other elite EuroLeague teams.

Mavs To Sign Campazzo, Luka Doncic’s Ex-Teammate

Campazzo joins the Mavs’ regular-season roster and reconnects with Luka Doncic, a teammate he had with Real Madrid during the 2017–18 campaign. Despite just spending a brief period of time together at Real Madrid, the two players developed a strong outside partnership that helped the team have one of its most successful seasons ever. Prior to this change, the Mavericks needed to fill one roster place.

In 65 games for the Denver Nuggets last season, the Argentinian guard averaged 5.1 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per contest. In November 2020, a two-time EuroLeague champion joined the Nuggets. In 130 games played, he has contributed 5.6 points and 3.5 assists.

The 31-year-old Campazzo did not have a mentor in Doncic, but he did find inspiration in him.
In January 2021, Campazzo recalled, “He’s always talking to me, telling me, ‘This is a competitive league, NBA, [but] you have to try.

As Campazzo joins a Luka Doncic-led backcourt that includes players like Spencer Dinwiddie, Tim Hardaway, and Frank Ntilikina, to mention a few, it is still unknown what kind of role he will play for the Mavs. Campazzo will probably have to fight for extra playing time at the one position.

Doncic will now have the opportunity to get back together with a former teammate. Before Doncic turned pro and transferred his incredible talent to the NBA, Luka and Campazzo played for the Spanish club Real Madrid.
