NFL Punishes Tom Brady For a Controversial Play vs Atlanta Falcons That Would Require Him to Shell Out $11k in Fines

Following a highly contentious play, the NFL penalized Tom Brady. The NFL has examined Grady Jarrett’s contested roughing-the-passer call on Tom Brady of Tampa Bay to see whether Brady attempted to kick Jarrett and whether that behavior justifies a punishment.

Grady Jarrett, a defensive lineman for the Atlanta Falcons, threw Brady to the ground during a sack. Just a few seconds later, when both players were standing up, Brady seemed to try to kick Jarrett, but he missed.

With 3:03 left in the game, Jarrett was called for roughing the passer on a contentious third-and-5 call, giving the Bucs a fresh starting position at the Atlanta 32 and enabling them to win the game.

Tom Brady fined $11k for kick

NFL fines for kneeing, kicking, and striking are $16,444 for a second infraction and $11,139 for a first offense. After analyzing the play when Jarrett was called for unnecessary roughness for throwing Brady to the ground, the NFL informed Brady of the punishment on Friday.

Tom Brady kicked his foot up while on the ground in response, but it didn’t seem to hit Jarrett. Jarrett and Chris Jones of the Kansas City Chiefs are automatically liable for fines for roughing-the-passer calls that infuriated players, coaches, and spectators because the hits didn’t seem to merit flags.

Coach Todd Bowles of the Bucs claimed to be uninformed of the kick. He disqualified safety Logan Ryan and cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting from Sunday’s Week 6 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday.
