Arizona State Fired Coach Herm Edwards, Investigation Begins
Herm Edwards was fired as Arizona State’s football coach in his fifth season after a humiliating home loss to Eastern Michigan and a continuing NCAA investigation into improper recruiting methods.
After the Sun Devils’ 30-21 loss to Mid-American Conference opponent Eastern Michigan on Saturday, which they were heavily favoured to win, Arizona State’s athletic director Ray Anderson made the announcement on Sunday.

“We have made the decision to make a change in the leadership of our football program, effective immediately,” Anderson said in a statement. “By mutual agreement, coach Edwards and I have determined that he will relinquish duties as our head coach. At the core of this is doing what is best for our current team, staff and university. I understand the frustrations out there. We must do better, and that starts with our decision today.”

Why Was Herm Edwards Fired?
After a hit-and-miss 2021, Edwards was able to hang onto his position, but a second shaky defeat resulted in his dismissal three games into the current campaign. Arizona State is still waiting to hear whether it would face NCAA punishment for reportedly having prospects on campus in 2020 during the COVID-19 dead period, which was enforced by the organization.

When Herm Edwards was chosen to head the mediocre program, it was thought that he was an unusual selection as a former NFL head coach. Anderson, a former NFL agent, represented Edwards while he was playing for the New York Jets.
Edwards had not coached at the collegiate level since serving as San Jose State’s defensive backs coach from 1987 to 1989. He had spent the nine years prior working as an NFL TV analyst.
