Richardson firmly established himself as the Gators’ full-time starter against then-No. 7 Utah in Week 1 after displaying his enormous potential while splitting time with Emory Jones the previous season. He led Florida past the Utes in an exciting season-opening victory with 168 passing yards and 106 rushing yards, including three rushing touchdowns.

In the first game of the 2022 Southeastern Conference for both teams, the University of Kentucky football team defeated the Florida Gators, 26-16, on Saturday night at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Florida. Richardson explained, “I told myself I was going to try to pass the ball more. I’m a quarterback.

He did. It didn’t succeed (14-of-35 for 143 yards).

When Richardson overthrew two receivers on the first drive, the problems began right away.

“Anthony Richardson is an extremely talented football player. I consider it to be fairly evident. Simply incredibly gifted, you could tell how much more at ease Coach Napier and his team were in this scheme. He could make all the throws thanks to his excellent arm, and he could also harm you with his feet, of course.

“I believe you saw last week that, despite straight coverage, Richardson dragged it down and simply raced it in for a score that was effortless, covering what, 40 or so yards? Other times, despite Utah’s intense pressure and the guys around him, he was able to flee. That demonstrates his strength and keen sense of perception.”
