NFL Insider Reveals Trey Lance’s Reaction to Jimmy Garoppolo’s One-Year Contract Extension With the 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers go into the new NFL season with not one but two extremely good quarterbacks on their team. It looked all but set that Jimmy Garoppolo would lose his position as QB1 after the 49ers drafted Lance. However, after Garoppolo and his team failed to find any suitors for his services, the 49ers sat down and reworked their contract with their veteran quarterback for a one-year deal with $6.5 million guaranteed. This is understood to have not gone down well with Lance.
Lance was No. 3 overall pick of last year’s draft but did not get a lot of playing time as he was second fiddle to Garoppolo. In his first NFL season, Lance played in six games with two starts, so there is not a significant sample size to take a look at to predict what he can be in 2022. He completed 41-of-71 passes (57.7%) for 603 yards with 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Lance also ran for 168 yards on 38 attempts with an additional score.

NFL insider Albert Breer shared his thoughts on the situation with Lance and Jimmy. He said, “While I’d heard [Trey] Lance was a little annoyed in the immediate aftermath [of Jimmy G restructuring], he’s a smart, mature kid who I believe can handle it. Truth is, if he couldn’t, you might have bigger questions about where the #49ers are at the position.”

Although Lance should still have the QB1 spot, he will not have the luxury of time on his hand. Because if he misses the mark in a few games, the pressure will be on to replace him with Garoppolo. It will be interesting to see how Kyle Shanahan handles the situation with having two perfectly able quarterbacks on his team.
