Lamar Jackson: Contract Offered like Kyler Murray but still deal not done
The timeframe for Lamar Jackson to sign a big contract with the Ravens is drawing near, but nothing indicates that a deal is close at hand. That isn’t because Baltimore hasn’t made the quarterback an offer. According to Fox Sports, the Ravens have already made Jackson an offer that is higher in salary than Kyler Murray’s new contract with the Cardinals in an effort to secure his services beyond the 2022 season. Jackson, on the other hand, might be looking for a fully guaranteed contract similar to Deshaun Watson’s agreement with the Browns.

Before Sunday’s preseason match between the Cardinals and Ravens, Jay Glazer opined, “This is a pretty enormous uphill climb.” “The reason why is because Lamar Jackson… is representing himself…. (The) Deshaun Watson trade kind of throws things out of wack because I’m sure there Jackson will want a fully fledged contact.”
Former NFL agent and salary cap analyst Joel Corry, a consultant , had previously named Jackson as the most likely candidate to follow Watson’s lead and sign a fully guaranteed contract. In exchange for his services, the latter received a five-year, $230 million contract with the Browns this spring. With $23 million due in 2022, Jackson is approaching the final year of his rookie contract. While Murray received a five-year, $230.5M extension from the Cardinals this summer, he still has two seasons left on his rookie contract, which means that over the course of his contract, he will earn less money per year than Watson. Since only $103 million of his overall contract is completely guaranteed, Arizona can easily replace him.

Given that Jackson, a two-time Pro Bowler with three postseason appearances under his belt, has outperformed both Murray and Watson as an NFL quarterback, it has long been anticipated that he will get new contract offers that are comparable to — or more than — Watson’s $46M per year.

Although Baltimore brass has previously made suggestions that Jackson is reticent to enter into discussions, Jackson and the Ravens have both openly professed their willingness to be together for the long term. Since he joined the league, the QB has defended himself, with assistance from his mother, rather than hiring a licensed NFL agent. With free agency looming in 2023, he has also informally set the start of the 2022 season as the timeframe for reaching a new contract.
