‘He was a beast in his prime’ – NFL fans pay tribute to Charles Johnson after Super Bowl winner dies aged 50
Former Pittsburgh Steelers star Charles Johnson, who won a Super Bowl and played nine seasons in the NFL, passed away at the age of 50 earlier this week. The California native played five seasons in Pittsburgh after being selected by the Steelers in the first round in 1994.
Johnson remains the 16th-best receiver in Steelers history and had a career-high 1,008 receiving yards in 1996. He went on to play with the Eagles for two seasons, hauling in seven touchdowns for the 2000 team, tying his previous record.
Johnson was then a member of the New England Patriots squad that won the Super Bowl in 2001. It was the first time that the Patriots got their hands on the NFL prize and it was also the first and only Super Bowl that Johnson won during his career.
In the Steelers’ defeat in the AFC Championship game, Johnson hauled in two passes. With the Buffalo Bills, Johnson’s playing career came to an end in 2002. After hanging up his boots, Johnson worked as the Heritage High School’s associate sports director in Wake Forest.
NFL fans react to Charles Johnson’s passing
On Twitter, one wrote, “RIP Coach. So many people, especially your Husky family, will miss you.” while another added, “This hurts. Great guy. Every time I walked into the gym, we chop it up. Always encouraging anyways looking to make me comfortable. Always asked if I needed anything. Always made me feel better than when I walked in the door.” A third commented, “Such a genuine and kind person has gone too soon. Prayers for his family, friends, and coworkers.’’ a fourth stated, “Shook about this. He did more than what people realized that he had done. Going to miss the end zone conversation among other things.’’

RIP. I was a freshman at Cajon High School in San Bernardino & he was a senior. That year was cut short (late hit out of bounds if I recall busted his leg), then of course he went on to Colorado and the rest is history. A great talent, & person. He made our hometown proud. #RIPCJ
