“It Really Elevates Everybody’s Attitude on the Mat”-Conor McGregor’s Coach Compares His Return to Training to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo Playing in a Park

Conor McGregor, like most children, was bullied at a young age in school. ‘The Notorious’ decided to take things into his own hands and learn the art of self-defense. In order to do so, McGregor enrolled himself at the local boxing gym, The Crumlin Boxing Club, where he first fell in love with combat sports.

However, as time went by, McGregor discovered the sport of MMA and decided to enroll for a class at ‘The Straight Blast Gym’ in Ireland, where has trained ever since under the able guidance of John Kavanagh.

‘The Notorious’ recently returned to ‘SBG’ for his first training session since his freak injury against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. Kavanagh shared what it was like having his star pupil back on the mats. He said, “He’s healthy, happy, and it’s great to have him back. The last few sessions in the gym were MMA-oriented.- he’s got the all-clear for now. He did a great session last night, we got some great rounds in. He hasn’t lost a beat and was looking great.”

John Kavanagh continued, “He just walks in and takes part in a regular jiu-jitsu class, and you’ve got guys on the mat there who have only been training a couple of months. So imagine like a group of guys on the park having a kickaround, and then Lionel Messi or Cristiano Rondalo comes up and says ‘hey, I’ll join in’- it really elevates everybody’s attitude on the mat.”
