3 biggest OROY candidates for the 2022 season
A lot of times, the winner of the Offensive Rookie of the Year (OROY) award is a quarterback, except when there’s a near-flawless season from a player of another position – like Ja’Marr Chase being a top 3 wide receiver in his first season in 2021. The league always put emphasis on quarterbacks in any individual award they can and the OROY isn’t different.
But this season is really improbable to see the OROY being a quarterback. Kenny Pickett was the only one picked in the first two rounds and he’s set to start his career as a backup with the Pittsburgh Steelers; the first round of the NFL draft had more defensive talent this year, so options are a little bit limited.
Check out the three biggest favorites for the OROY award:
#1 – Garrett Wilson, New York Jets
If you want Zach Wilson to succeed, then give him the best weapons you can. That’s the logic used by the Jets back in the 2022 draft which netted them Garrett Wilson in the 10th, who many considered the best wide receiver of the class because of his route-running and his yards-after-catch potential, both things that should help the second-year quarterback massively. If they build chemistry quickly, Wilson will be the favorite for the OROY award.
#Jets GM Joe Douglas said CB Ahmad Gardner, WR Garrett Wilson and DE Jermaine Johnson were 3 out of the top 8 players on their board.
And they ended up with all of them. A very happy draft room.

#2 – Treylon Burks, Tennessee Titans
The Titans traded A.J. Brown during the draft to the Philadelphia Eagles and, with the first-round pick acquired, they drafted a… new A.J. Brown? Burks has basically the same qualities that his predecessor, with enough athleticism to dominate at the point of attack but good enough technique and speed to beat defenders and create separation. Ryan Tannehill should absolutely enjoy his new toy, with Burks being my personal favorite receiver of the class.
Treylon Burks created the most screen yards out of any of the first round wide receivers last season with 219 yards.
This could be a huge help to a team that had 52 yards from receivers in the screen game last season. #FantasyFootball#FantasyFF pic.twitter.com/oblvW0nrd0

#3 – Drake London, Atlanta Falcons
London is far from one of my favorites but there’s potential for him to get the award because there aren’t many weapons for him to share the targets, especially with Calvin Ridley being suspended for a whole year. Kyle Pitts and London will both be the focus of the passing offense, which should lead to big numbers and, as a consequence, consideration for the award.
