$800 Million Worth Former NFL Prospect Rock ‘Dwayne Johnson’, Explains Why He Always Wears the Number 54
In his first year at the university, Dwayne Johnson played defensive lineman and was a part of the 1991 University of Miami squad that won the national championship. Johnson played predominantly in supporting roles during his four years with the University of Miami squad, mostly because he was listed underneath guys like future Pro NFL Hall of Famer Warren Sapp on the depth chart.
Johnson only played high school football for two years, but his prowess in one of the most difficult high school athletic divisions in the country caught the eye of many NCAA Division I university schools.
Johnson was signed by the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League after graduating from the University of Miami in May 1995. There, he was switched from defensive lineman to linebacker. He was given a spot on Calgary’s practice roster but was released two months into the 1995 campaign.

DJ said: “Lot of questions from you guys on why I wear the number 54. Well, I’m going to tell you the story. So long before my career in Hollywood, long before I was suplexing 300 lb men for a living as a professional wrestler. I had one dream, one focus, and one drive, and that was the game of football. And my goal was to make it to the NFL. There are 53 men on the NFL roster. I was always number 54.”
