Baker Mayfield Ready to Dunk On His Former Side Cleveland Browns During NFL Week One
Baker Mayfield assisted the Cleveland Browns in leaving the NFL’s depths, but the team’s leaders started to believe he couldn’t lead them to success. The Browns finally parted ways with Mayfield on Wednesday by dealing him to the Carolina Panthers. For Mayfield, whom former general manager John Dorsey selected first overall in 2018 after Cleveland went a combined 1-31 the previous two seasons, the Browns will receive a conditional fifth-round selection in 2024.
Additionally, the Browns have agreed to contribute around $10.5 million of Mayfield’s $18.885 million contract. Mayfield’s trade from the Browns to the Panthers is now official as of Monday night thanks to the paperwork that was submitted to the league.
Mayfield can now focus on settling in, getting to know his new teammates, and competing for the job and the opportunity to start the regular season against Cleveland on September 11.

Baker Mayfield issues fresh warning to Cleveland Browns
One of the many exciting parts of Baker Mayfield being acquired by Carolina from Cleveland is that he will immediately get to play against his former team. In Week One, the Panthers will host the Browns, which Mayfield acknowledged has special meaning for him.
“I’m not going to sit here and be a robot and tell you that’s not one I’ve marked on the calendar already,” Mayfield said, via Darin Gantt of the team’s website.
“One, that’s not who I am. To me, it’s about winning games. Whoever we have marked on the schedule, I’m going to try to win. Obviously, this one has a little more history and personal meaning, but for me, it’s about winning and setting the tone for the rest of the year, and however I can help this team do that, I’m going to do.”
Mayfield, the first overall choice in the 2018 draft, made 59 starts with the Browns and had a 29-30 record. He contributed to the squad’s 11-5 record and playoff win over the Steelers in 2020, which helped the team advance to the postseason. Mayfield had a 60.5 percent completion rate for 3,010 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions last year.
