Which Franchise Got the Better Deal in the Jerami Grant Trade? Pistons or Trail Blazers?

In exchange for Milwaukee’s 2025 first-round selection, this year’s 36th pick, and future second-round draft pick compensation, the Blazers acquire Jerami Grant and the 46th choice in the current draft from the Detroit Pistons. Most notably, in this year’s draft, the Pistons and Blazers traded second-round choices.

The Blazers are currently ranked 46th overall, while the Pistons are currently ranked 36th. Additionally, the Pistons will receive a 2026 second-round selection and a 2025 second-round pick from the Blazers.

A $21 million trade exemption will also be given to Detroit as part of the agreement. However, there is still much work to be done to get this Portland team back to what we are used to seeing if the Blazers are to progress back toward the playoffs.

Who got the better Jerami Grant trade deal?

The Blazers made a great choice in acquiring Grant. When someone with his talent and adaptability plays both sides of the floor, a lot of the seasoned wisdom that was lacking for the majority of 2021–22 begins to return. Grant should be a fantastic match as a versatile forward who will instantly strengthen their shoddy defense and also help relieve some of Lillard’s offensive pressure.

It will be a welcome change of pace for the Blazers, who have largely depended on a tiny backcourt, to have a legitimate scoring threat on the wings. A rebuilding Pistons club values the first-round selection three years from now considerably more than a Blazers team that is now striving to win.

On the Pistons’ end of this exchange, it is the first query that is raised. It’s common practice to trade Grant for first-round choices. This looks to be a paltry sum of money in return for Grant, and one has to question whether the Pistons could have been able to get more if they had dealt him at the trade deadline in the previous year.

The fact that they accepted this deal, though, is a clear indicator of the kind of offers that were out there. Any team dealing for Grant would have to be prepared to pay him his next contract and provide him the kind of role he was seeking on offense.
