Which MLB team has won the most World Series titles?

The New York Yankees of the AL East division have played in 40 World Series title games, winning 27 World Series titles. They also have the most championship appearances and most victories by any team in the four major North American professional sports leagues.

When it comes to World Series victories, no other team can compare to the Yankees. The Yankees have won the World Series twice, four times in a row from 1936 to 1939 and five times in a row from 1949 to 1953, making them the only club in the MLB to do so.

The team debuted in 1901 in Baltimore, Maryland, and played two seasons in the American League as the Orioles. Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the failing Baltimore club in 1903 and moved it to New York, first to Hilltop Park (1903–12), one of Manhattan’s highest points, thus the name New York Highlanders.

Due to the team’s affiliation with the American League, local sportswriters frequently referred to them as “Yankees” or “Yanks.” The nickname Highlanders further lapsed into obscurity upon the club’s 1913 relocation to the Polo Grounds, when the team has formally christened the Yankees. Unsurprisingly, New York has also appeared in most World Series games (40).

Due to the prominent pinstripes on their home jerseys, the squad has also gone by the names Bronx Bombers, Pinstripers, and Evil Empire (by opposing fans, particularly those of their archrival, the Boston Red Sox). Until 1922, they played in the Polo Grounds. Then, from 1923 through 2008, they played at Yankee Stadium, often known as “The House that Ruth Built,” after the legendary Yankees hitter Babe Ruth. In 2009, the club relocated to a brand-new ballpark also known as Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees hired veteran catcher Joe Girardi to manage the team on a three-year deal following Torre’s exit. The final season played at Yankee Stadium was in 2008. On July 15, 2008, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game for that year was held at Yankee Stadium to commemorate its last season and history.

On September 21, 2008, Yankee Stadium hosted its final regular-season match. After the game, Jeter addressed the audience, saying “take the memories of this field, add them to the fresh experiences that will come at the new Yankee Stadium, and continue to pass them on from generation to generation.” Jeter thanked the NY crowd for their incredible support over the years.

The Yankees won their division once more in 2019 and made it to the ALCS before being defeated by the Astros once more. New York was defeated by the Tampa Bay Rays in the Division Series of the 2020 season, which was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Yankees advanced further in the regular season in 2021 thanks to a strong finish that featured a 13-game winning streak. But in the Wild Card Game, the squad fell to the Red Sox.
