‘Cheated But Did Not Have the Courage to Use a Needle’- Chael Sonnen Has a Unique Take on Daniel Cormier’s ‘Towelgate’

A major component of International Fight Week just wrapped up with the Hall of Fame ceremony now in the books. Daniel Cormier and Khabib Nurmagomedov were inducted into the Hall of Fame, and it’s no surprise given their body of work over the years. In fact, the moment both fighters announced their respective retirements from MMA, it became abundantly clear that they would end up as Hall of Famers.

During his acceptance speech, Daniel Cormier dropped a cheeky bomb on fans and media members when he admitted to having cheated to make weight against Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson. He went on the say, “I want to tell you something because I feel like right now is the time to be completely transparent. I think I may have grabbed the towel in Buffalo. Rumble, I’m sorry my guy.”

In the now-infamous towel gate, Cormier was seen grabbing onto the towel in order to make the championship weight limit for his title fight against ‘Rumble’. As seen by the recent incident with Charles Oliveira, coming in overweight leads to several complications, including being stripped of your status as the undisputed UFC champion.

Chael Sonnen fires shots at Daniel Cormier

While many fans found DC’s admission of guilt as hilarious, there were some who didn’t see the humor in his actions. ‘The American Gangster’ shared his thoughts on Cormier’s move via Twitter and it’s evident that he found the admission pointless.

True to form, Sonnen’s witty response was ultimately capped off by him claiming to be the ‘linear’ light heavyweight champion due to Daniel Cormier’s action.

“It’s on video. Anybody who thought a confession was a gotcha moment is NERD. Like if he said “no I didn’t” while you’re staring at that photo do you think the jury is still deliberating?… Cheated but did not have the courage to use a needle. Disappointing… THIS makes ME the “LINEAR CHAMP”

The MMA community is certainly split down the middle by Daniel Cormier’s decision to tell all on his HOF induction ceremony day.
