‘We Kick His A** and We Move Forward’- Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera Eyeing Petr Yan Fight On Route to a Title Shot
UFC bantamweight contender Marlon Vera spoke to the Schmo in a recent interview and shared his plans to move closer to title contention. Per ‘Chito’ Vera, he’s got his sights set on facing Petr Yan as he looks to springboard himself towards a title shot. Vera has had a career resurgence with some stellar performances recently and he’s established himself as a big-time player in the division.
Petr Yan is one of the premier contenders in the bantamweight division and a win over ‘No Mercy’ Yan virtually comes with a guaranteed title fight. Moreover, Yan just competed for the belt against Aljamain Sterling and was unable to get the job done when they last re-matched each other.
‘Chito’ Vera is optimistic about his ability to make a deep run in the division. His recent beat down of Rob Font was an eye-opener for many as it showed Vera’s newfound conviction to become the 135-pound titleholder. Even his biggest detractor in Sean O’Malley took notice of his performances as of late.
“We’re right there. We’re literally one win away to fight for that belt. I hope that we get it done with Yan. I think that’s the path to the belt. No.1 Contender. We kick his a** and we move forward… If I stop Yan, I get a title shot.”
Additionally, Vera also went after Dominick Cruz, who disregarded Vera as a challenging contender for a long time. Cruz was looking to face someone who was placed above him in the rankings in order to further his position. However, now that Vera is indeed ranked higher than him in the rankings, Dominick Cruz has yet to substantiate a call-out.
“Dominick is always talking about me. You know, he doesn’t want to do it. He doesn’t want the smoke. So he doesn’t get it. We move forward. Yan wants it so he gets it.” [h/t sportskeeda.com]
The future looks bright for Marlon Vera, who could be one of the more unlikely champions in recent history. He’s moved up from a fringe contender to a legitimate title threat in a very short while.
