‘People Had Messed with the Scale’- Joe Rogan Explains How Charles Oliveira Got ‘Screwed’ at UFC 274

UFC commentator Joe Rogan has never shied away from using his massive podcast platform to criticize the company he’s worked with for over 20 years if need be. In a recent episode of ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’, the seasoned broadcaster talked about the weight scale controversy at UFC 274.

Charles Oliveira was stripped of his lightweight title for coming in 0.5 pounds over the weight limit and this sparked a controversy that the weighing scale wasn’t calibrated the correct way. This conversation was brought about due to the fact that fighters were allegedly showing up to check their weight the night before.

Joe Rogan is staunch in his belief that Charles Oliveira received the rough end of the stick and was the victim of other fighters having ‘messed with the scale’. Additionally, Rogan commented on how the calibration being in pounds rather than kilograms was another reason that foreign fighters faced issues on weigh-in day.

“He’s a very, very nice guy, and he got screwed in his last fight. There was some shenanigans with the scale. Some people had messed with the scale. Here’s a problem with these digital scales: Foreign fighters, they use kilograms and in America, obviously we use pounds.”

“These scales are calibrated and then the foreign fighters would reset the scale so they could switch it back to kilograms. So, it f*cks up the whole calibration. He weighed in the night before the weigh-ins, and he was like, ‘Oh, I’m good to go.’ And then in the morning, he goes and shows up for the weight cut, and it’s a pound plus off, and that is directly related to this calibration thing.” [h/t MMA Junkie.com]

Opinions aside, Charles Oliveira was demoted by the organization and his next fight will be a number one contender match-up. However, Dana White would go on to say that Charles Oliveira was receiving his championship-level fight purse despite missing weight.

Now riding an 11-fight win streak but with no belt on his shoulder, ‘Do Bronx’ will be as motivated as ever to make his mark in his next fight.
