“He Knows What’s Happened in the Gym”- Dustin Poirier Reveals Colby Covington Fight Was Offered to Him Last Week and Why He Will Accept It
Former interim welterweight champion Colby Covington is in a bit of a tough spot at the moment. ‘Chaos’ is currently 0-2 against the champion Kamaru Usman, which means getting a third shot at the title will be extremely difficult as long as Usman is the champion. However, he has firmly established that he is the second-best welterweight in the UFC at the moment.
In his most recent outing, Covington secured an impressive win over former teammate and training partner Jorge Masvidal. Following the win, he called out Dustin Poirier as one of the many fighters from his former gym that he wanted to take out.
While speaking to the media backstage before the Covington-Masvidal fight, Poirier was asked if he would face Covington. ‘The Diamond’ stated that he would never fight Covington in the ring and let him make money off him and that if the two ever fought he would end up in jail.
Colby Covington to take on Dustin Poirier at welterweight?
However, in a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, it seems as though Poirier has changed his stance and is welcoming a fight against Covington. When asked about it he said, “I don’t hate anyone, but if there was a line right before hate, Colby’s standing right there. I really dislike the guy, and I’ve been saying I don’t want him to make a dollar off of fighting me, but they offered me him last week… It was either wait to the end of the year and fight for a No. 1 contender at lightweight, or fight in July, and that was the name that they gave me. So I was like, ‘F*** it.”
‘The Diamond’ continued, “He’s everything I dislike about mixed martial arts,” Poirier said. “He’s a cartoon character. Everything he does if for any extra click, view, none of it’s authentic. He can wrestle, he’s though. I’ve been around him for years. I know him from being in the gym with him since 2012, 2013-ish, but he’s just a fake, a phony…Colby knows what’s up. He’s knows what’s happened in the gym. I’m not a scrap and tell kind of guy – I won’t say what happened, but he knows what happened those years in the gym.”
