Dustin Poirier Targets Colby Covington Fight for July Following ‘International Call Out’

UFC lightweight Dustin Poirier has the MMA world talking about him after making it clear that he’s ready for a comeback fight on July 30th.

‘The Diamond’ issued an ‘international call out’ to anyone at or around his weight class for a scrap at the earliest. Moreover, he doubled down and accepted a challenge from a former training partner in Colby Covington who has wanted to fight him for a while now.

Poirier made it clear that he was ready to take on all comers, however, it’s clear that ‘Chaos’ Covington is certainly on his radar. Both men have grown to dislike each other in recent years and Covington has gone out of his way to slander Dustin Poirier at every chance he gets.

Things began to sour when Colby Covington was still an active member of American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida and things have only gotten worse from there.

Speaking on his disdain for Poirier, Colby Covington lashed out and claimed to have ‘smacked’ Poirier around in the gym when they used to train. Moreover, he alleged that he pushed Dustin Poirier to the brink of tears when it was all said and done.

“I used to smack him around so many times in sparring back in the day. I mean, for years, smacking him. He’d literally leave the gym crying. He’d go to Make Brown, just crying, I can’t beat him, why’s his cardio so good, why does he just keep punching me in the face, I can’t do it.” [bjpenn.com]

It’s evident that there is no love lost between both fighters and July 30th could be the proving ground to bookend their rivalry. Covington has settled the score with Jorge Masvidal inside the cage and he’ll want to do the same with Dustin Poirier at the first chance he gets.

Dustin Poirier is coming off a loss to Charles Oliveira in his last fight and he’ll want to make sure he returns to the winner’s circle. If the two are matched up, fans can expect to see Dustin Poirier in top form.
