Tony Ferguson Explains Why He Will Not Take up Charles Oliveira’s Offer to Train With Him in Brazil

Tony Ferguson will go down as one of the best and most entertaining lightweights to have ever fought in the UFC. ‘El Cucuy’ was one step shy of clinching gold in the UFC. The former interim champion set the record for the most consecutive wins secured in the UFC with an extremely impressive 12-fight win streak that included wins over Rafael dos Anjos, and Kevin Lee among others.

However, recent results have not been favorable to ‘El Cucuy’ who is currently on a four-fight skid. In his most recent outing, Ferguson was on the receiving end of a brutal front kick knockout which shut his lights out in a brutal fashion. Since then, the MMA community has shown immense support for the former interim champion.

Current lightweight champion Charles Oliveira offered help to Ferguson to get back to winning ways. He said, “We’re among big dogs, up & downs are part of our journeys [sic]. I admire you a lot @tonyfergusonxt. You’ve the history inside the Octagon. Head up “El Cucuy”! If you wish, let’s train together in ChuteBoxe’s headquarter [sic] in Sao Paolo for your nxt fight. You’re a brother!”

In a recent interview, Oliveira explained why he will not be taking up Oliveira’s offer to train together. He said, “No, I don’t think it’s social media clout. I have to really reflect on what he said because Chute Boxe is a very good school. But he is in my weight class. I’m one of the only fighters that he hasn’t finished… I see myself competing against him again… I’m looking for local gyms that I’m not going to compete with.”

What is next for Tony Ferguson after four straight losses in the UFC?

In most cases, if a fighter succumbed to four straight losses, his position in the UFC would be under intense scrutiny. However, given that Ferguson is one of the biggest names in the sport, he has the luxury of a few more chances.

Unfortunately, given his age and the way his recent fights panned out, Ferguson will not have a lot of chances left before he is cut from the UFC.
