“Still One of the Most Elite Fighters in the World”- Dana White Says Tony Ferguson Is Not Fighting for His ‘UFC Life’ Against Michael Chandler

Tony Ferguson takes on Michael Chandler in what will be his first fight in a year. The last time ‘El Cucuy’ stepped in the cage, he suffered a lopsided unanimous decision loss against Beneil Dariush at UFC 262. In his comeback fight, Ferguson takes on Chandler, who is coming off a loss as well, albeit in extremely different circumstances.

The former interim lightweight champion is currently on a three-fight skid. Justin Gaethje put a halt to Ferguson’s 12-fight win streak when the two faced each other at 249. Ferguson then suffered losses against the likes of Oliveira and Dariush. Given his recent form and his age, there are rumors circulating that a loss against Chandler might be the end of the road for Ferguson in the UFC.

UFC President Dana White in a recent interview rubbished that notion. He said, “He’s still the No.7-ranked guy in the world, you know what I mean? So he’s still in the top 10. Still in the top 15. If you look at who he’s fought, he’s fought everybody, you know what I mean? So no, I wouldn’t say he’s fighting for his UFC life.”

Is the fight against Michael Chandler a do or die fight for Tony Ferguson?

Although Dana White has said that Ferguson’s future is not in doubt, there have been many instances where Dana White’s statements have not stood the test of time. If he loses against Chandler, It is hard to believe that the UFC would retain a 38-year-old on a four-fight skid.

Tony Ferguson

To make matters even worse, Ferguson and the UFC do not see eye to eye. In recent press conferences, ‘El Cucuy’ has gone on to brand Dana White, a drug dealer, for not letting him in participate in other sports outside of the UFC. Keeping in mind all the above factors as much as fans would like to believe otherwise, a loss might mean the last we see of Tony Ferguson in the UFC.
