‘A Legend of the Sport, a Fan Favorite’- Alexander Volkanovski Has This to Say About Featherweight Staple Chan Sung Jung ‘The Korean Zombie’

UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski spoke to SCMP in the aftermath of his dominant win at UFC 273. Alexander ‘The Great’ handed Chan Sung Jung a decisive loss and firmly stamped his name as the best featherweight in the world right now. In fact, Volkanovski is being touted as the best pound-for-pound fighter over the likes of Kamaru Usman who has held that honor for a while now.

‘Volk’ stopped Chan Sung Jung on the feet as ‘The Korean Zombie’ had no answer for the technical masterclass being put forth by the champion. Referee Herb Dean mercifully stepped in and called off the contest since Jung was far too tough for his own good.

Where does ‘The Korean Zombie’ stand in the eyes of Volkanovski?

The Australian fighter revealed that despite Chan Sung Jung’s rather uneventful day at the office, his legacy within the sport has not declined in any way. ‘The Korean Zombie’ proved that his moniker was apt in more ways than one.

What’s more, ‘Volk’ recognized that Chan Sung Jung’s greatness is also defined by his ability to stay relevant and compete at the highest level. In what could be Zombie’s final UFC title shot opportunity, he has still been able to be a force to be cherished and remembered.

“He’s still a legend. He’s a legend of the sport, a fan favorite. He’s one of the legends of this division, just wasn’t a champion. We’ve had very dominant champions in our sport so that’s no discredit to him, for not being a champion. He was always just under the champions, he was just under the game.”

“I look at the champions that there was, and he was there for three champions, Aldo, Max and myself so to be at the top and be just under the champions that whole time through three of the UFC’s featherweight greatest fighters and to be just there, that’s still saying something. He never got the title, it doesn’t mean he ain’t a legend, it doesn’t mean he can’t fight.”’

After his defeat, it seemed as though Chan Sung Jung was preparing to set down his gloves in the middle of the cage and announce his retirement. However, ‘The Korean Zombie’ will likely return to action soon and try to scale the mountain once more.
