Former Mets reliever Jeff Innis dies at 59
Former New York Mets reliever Jeff Innis died Sunday after a battle with cancer. He was 59.
Innis, a right-hander, had been fighting cancer since 2017. The Mets said his condition began worsening in November.
Innis died in Atlanta under hospice care. According to a GoFundMe page set up by his family, Innis was hospitalized in Houston and was flown to Atlanta after treatment was “no longer viable” due to the spread of the cancer.
“We lost one of the good guys today. Jeff Innis passed away after a long battle with cancer,” Mets public relations director Jay Horowitz said on Twitter.
Horowitz said Innis attended a Mets Fantasy Camp in November before “the disease ramped up again.”
The sidearmer pitched for the Mets from 1987-93 and made 288 appearances over the seven seasons. He went 10-20 with five saves and a 3.05 ERA.
In his last three seasons, Innis made 212 total appearances, including a career-high 76 in 1992.
Innis was a 13th round pick by the Mets in 1983 after pitching collegiately for Illinois.
