Which Team Has the Most Losses in the MLB?

Teams across the league are battling it out for major honors as we move towards a crucial stage of the ongoing 2021 Major League Baseball season. Teams like the Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago White Sox, Oakland A’s, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, and the San Francisco Giants, are working towards securing a spot in the 2021 MLB Playoffs.

When it comes to American baseball, there’s no team more successful than the New York Yankees. The Bronx Bombers have a massive tally of 27 World Series wins to their name and continue to challenge for glory in the MLB. After that, we have the St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, and the Giants as some of the most successful sporting teams in the league.

But which team has the worst record when it comes to wins-losses?

Look away Philadelphia Phillies supporters, you won’t like this

The Philadelphia Phillies are currently second in the NL East with a 26-29 record behind the Mets. They’ve won the MLB World Series on two occasions in the past, most recently in 2008. But unfortunately, they also have the most regular-season losses in American baseball.

At the time of writing, the Phillies have played a total of 20,944 games, winning 9,829 and losing a total of 11,000. Since making their league debut in 1883, they’ve tied a total of 115 games as well. But despite their poor overall record, the Phillies are now a team on the rise since the advent of the last decade.

They are followed in second and third by the Atlanta Braves (10,688) and the Chicago Cubs (10,458), respectively. Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, the Cardinals, and the Dodgers are the other names on that list (in that order).

Interestingly,  Pittsburgh’s 19-41 record for the shortened 2020 season earned them the title for the “fewest wins in a regular-season” in the modern MLB era beginning from 1900.

The 2018 Baltimore Orioles were the first team since the 2003 Detroit Tigers to register less than 50 games in a season and lost every season series against AL opponents. Baltimore only won two-season series overall.
