Will Tom Brady be the number 1 pick in every NFL draft over the past 21 years?
Former Washington Redskins safety Ryan Clark tweeted something that conjured a storm in the social media. He wrote, “I believe Tom Brady is the GOAT. He’s had the greatest career at the most important position of the sport. With that in mind, I wonder if he would be the number 1 overall pick if we put every player from the last 25 years in the same draft.”
As soon as he hit the publish button, mixed reactions started pouring in from the fans. Later, Ryan attended ESPN’s show, “Get Up”, where he was asked to explain his tweet.
“G.Ms wouldn’t have picked Brady”
Clark said, “Listen, when I look at Tom Brady and what he’s accomplished after this last super bowl to me, he put the greatest of all time conversation out of reach. even if Patrick Mahomes wins four, wins five, which I thought was all he would be to be in that conversation to overtake Tom Brady because of his talent, I don’t think he can do it.”
“To go to a new place, Io be the G.M. of that team, to bring that team to a super bowl after they only won once in the history of their franchise. But if you put him in the draft, would you take him over Aaron Rodgers? Would you take him over Patrick Mahomes? Is there some skilled player that you would take before? Is it a Randy moss? Is it a Calvin johnson? Even knowing what we know, you put G.Ms in the room and you gave him 25 years of players, would we take Tom Brady first overall? and I think if they were being honest with themselves, they wouldn’t. And that’s extremely interesting in the greatest team sports of all time”, he concluded.
It would have been a tough pick, says former Broncos CB
Former Denver Broncos cornerback Domonique Foxworth was also on the same page as Clark. On being asked if he thinks Brady would be the number 1 pick in the above scenario, he said, “I don’t think so. You can throw Peyton manning in that conversation also. You would get no argument whether he’s the greatest of all time, but is he the best? You’d get plenty of argument there. I believe in Tom Brady as I believe in science but if you’re looking at true talent, what R.C. said was right.
He continued, “This is the team-dependent game out there in a position that is very dependent on the quarterback. And it’s not basketball where you just put a guy out there and he completely changes the rest of the team.”
Tom Brady is way ahead of this year’s rookies
On night one of the NFL Draft a few weeks ago, 14 prospects were 20 years old. In case you’re curious, Tom Brady has played in the NFL for 21 seasons, with the next season being his 22nd. This suggests that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB started playing at the NFL when some of the current year rookies were not even born.
At this point in his career, Tom Brady is certainly proving a point to the younger players. It isn’t a regular sight to see a quarterback winning his seventh Super Bowl championship at the age of 43. Many players in the past had become panel analysts at such an age. Brady has continued to enjoy the most remarkable NFL career of all time, but not even he could have expected that he will be playing in the league longer than any of his college peers.
He has achieved what no one else has achieved and he certainly should get credit for that. However, whether he would be the number one pick over the past 25 years, that’s a debate we would rather let the fans decide.
