Is Stephen Curry the front runner for NBA MVP 2020-21

The race for the 2020-2021 NBA MVP has begun but due to a shortened season and absence of big names from the season, it is hard to figure out who will win the award for the most valuable player in the NBA.

However, one man, on a mission has been giving teams and his opponents a run for their money and that is Stephen ‘Chef’ Curry.

Coming off spending some of the most dominant years in the league and also beating the Bulls all-time win record, the Warriors are just struggling to make ends meet right now.

The other half of the splash brothers’ duo, Klay Thompson has been out since the start of the season and the new ray of hope, rookie centre James Wiseman has also been sidelined due to injuries. Draymond Green is an excellent defensive anchor however he cannot consistently contribute on offense. And all the load landed on Stephen Curry.

Multiple NBA analysts and talk show hosts were quick to dismiss Curry and the Warriors as a team that should tank once again due to injuries. But it seems as if Curry took that personally and went on a mission to shut down his naysayers with erupting performances this season.

Curry recently passed Wilt Chamberlain in the most points scored as a Warrior this season. What Stephen Curry has been able to do for the past few months this season has been nothing less than spectacular and this year, with the departure of Durant to the Brooklyn Nets and losing Klay Thompson & James Wiseman to injuries, instead of shutting down, he’s been on a tear, shutting down teams just by himself.

In the 58 games played so far, Curry is averaging 31.5 points per game, 5.6 rebounds per game and 5.7 assists per game as well all the while shooting a whopping 42.6% from the three-point arc and 48.5% from the field. Curry has been giving him all every single night, leaving it all on the floor. Curry leads the NBA in scoring while still posting ridiculous numbers every night. A new career-high 62 points in his fifth game of the season, Curry has hit 10 or more three-pointers in a five-game span, something no other NBA player has achieved.

At the start of the season, Steph said: he had nothing to prove at age-33, but still had plenty to accomplish. So much has changed for his Golden State Warriors over the last two seasons as the team has gone from winning championships to competing for a spot in the playoffs. The only thing that has not changed is Curry’s game, in which he raises the bar more again and again this season.

The most impressive thing about Curry this season is that opposing defences focused their full attention on him every night due to the Warriors not having another reliable scorer and he still came off on top. With Curry on the court this season, the Warriors offense ranks right at the edge of the top-10. With him on the bench, the offense level would be the worst in the league and that should sum it up.

The first unanimous MVP winner’s game has been nothing short of greatness and could very well win the MVP race which is currently being battled out by two big men in the league.
