49ers QB Brock Purdy Moves Up The List To Win 2023 NFL MVP

How effective has Brock Purdy been this season for the San Francisco 49ers?

49ers QB Brock Purdy Moves Up The List To Win 2023 NFL MVP

After a 42-10 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, the second-year quarterback is receiving a lot of NFL MVP talk.

Purdy sliced up the Cowboys as Mr. Irrelevant in 2022, going 17-for-24 passing (70.8%) for 252 yards, four touchdowns, and a 144.4 quarterback rating.

This was against a Dallas defence that was second in the league in yards allowed per game (259.8) and tied for top in touchdowns allowed (four).

Purdy is currently tied for the highest chance to win the 2023 NFL MVP at PointsBet after San Francisco defeated the Dallas Cowboys 42-10 on Sunday Night Football in Week 5.

Purdy has a +500 chance of winning the prize. QB Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs and QB Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins both have +500 odds. In Week 5, he put on a masterclass against the Cowboys.

Purdy has completed 69.3% of his tosses with 2,645 passing yards and a 22/4 TD/INT ratio over that time. He has the highest QB Rating (123.1) and QBR (83.7) in the NFL and has yet to throw an interception all season.

Purdy went to 10-0 as a starter in the regular season, tying him with former Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger for the second-longest streak to begin a career in the Super Bowl era.

Purdy’s supremacy has no end in sight. Kyle Shanahan, the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, is one of the top play designers in the game. With WRs Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, the 49ers boast a top-five wideout combo in the NFL.

Purdy has completed 69.3% of his passes in that time, totalling 2,645 yards. Tight end George Kittle caught three of Purdy’s touchdown throws.

“Purdy just shows up, he does a hell of a job. He’s just so consistent, week in, week out, day in and day out,” Kittle said. “You have the same guy Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Seven days a week, he’s the same person.

“So it’s awesome to be around a guy like that, who’s just that consistent. The throws he makes on Wednesdays are the throws he’s making in the game. … He’s just playing at a very high level. He’s playing like a vet. He doesn’t seem like a second-year guy; he seems like a vet.”

So much of the Brock Purdy tale is incredible, but this may be the most incredible: He went from being the final choice in the NFL draft to a frontrunner for MVP in 17 months.

You might believe that’s a stretch, because it’s impossible for a guy who was passed over by 31 NFL clubs in the first seven rounds to have a passer rating 27 points better than Patrick Mahomes, and you doubt he could have led his team to 5-0 by an average margin of 20 points each game. However, that is not a stretch. Brock Purdy has already won the MVP award five weeks into the season.
