4 Potential College Stars For Heisman Trophy This Year
The Heisman Trophy is the highest honor a college football player can get.
Heisman Trophy is traditionally given to the “best” overall player, implying that the victor will have a chance to play in the NFL. Quarterbacks (QB) and running backs (RB) have received the award in the past, although two tight ends and three receivers have also won it.
Only Archie Griffin from Ohio State University has won the award twice out of the 86 total winners. Back-to-back Heisman winners have occurred 5 times, and Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Notre Dame lead all schools with 7 winners each.
In recent years, quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Lamar Jackson, as well as running back Derrick Henry, have all won this coveted honor and gone on to have successful NFL careers. It doesn’t mean they’ll play in the Super Bowl, but it does signify they were the greatest player in college that year. So, who can win this year’s Heisman Trophy? Today, we shall discuss four prospects who can earn the honors.
Notre Dame running back Kyren Williams
Kyren Williams was among the last season’s major breakout talents. In 2019, he only had 29 total yards from scrimmage, but in 2020 he rushed for 1,438 yards and 14 touchdowns while leading Notre Dame to the College Football Playoff. There aren’t many sure things on the Fighting Irish’s roster heading into next season, but Williams is one of the early contenders for the Heisman Trophy.
Alabama quarterback Bryce Young
Bryce Young is currently riding a massive hype. This year, the young quarterback would serve as a backup to Mac Jones, a Heisman candidate, and New England Patriots QB. Bryce Young, the new quarterback, will be called upon to perform. Young has been a topic of conversation since he was a freshman in high school, and he originally committed to USC before switching to Alabama.
Young has only been at Alabama for one year, but he was the top quarterback and #5 overall recruit in the 2020 class. He had the opportunity to see and learn from Mac Jones, plus it is Alabama, so fans are anticipating huge things from him.
Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler
Another outstanding quarterback who can win the Heisman Trophy this year is the University of Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler. Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, who both won the Heisman Trophy, and Jalen Hurts, who was a contender, are his predecessors. In 2020, he rushed for 3,031 yards with 28 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His numbers were excellent, especially considering this was his first year playing after sitting behind Hurts his freshman year. Next season, he’ll almost certainly improve, and he has the ability to help Oklahoma return to the College Football Playoff.
North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell
In 2020, Howell threw for 3,586 yards with 30 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also took North Carolina to the Capital One Orange Bowl against Texas A&M, but they fell short. Because North Carolina has long been a basketball school, Howell’s contribution to the football teams is critical. If he can enhance his stats and lead his team to another bowl game with a better seed, he will almost certainly win the Heisman Trophy and remain the top choice.
