3 possible landing spots for Carson Wentz in 2022 NFL season
Carson Wentz and the Indianapolis Colts are at a weird spot. Clearly, the team is uncomfortable with the idea of running it back with him and there’s the expectation that he’ll be traded or released until mid-March, just a single year after the Colts traded a first-round pick to acquire him.
In case Wentz does get moved, there won’t be a shortage of teams looking to acquire his services. He’s a strong-armed quarterback who has a Super Bowl ring, even if his career has declined sharply over the last two years.
Check out 3 landing spots for Wentz:
1. New Orleans Saints
As bizarre as it might look at first glance, let’s not forget that the Saints will be active in the quarterback market – Taysom Hill is not and won’t ever be the answer. They’re needing a replacement as Jameis Winston will be a free agent again and, after a good year, might look for more money than what New Orleans can pay him.
Enter Wentz. If he’s indeed released, then there’s no way he’ll earn starter quarterback money again. What if he teams up with a strong defense in New Orleans to sign a prove-it deal for less money? It’d be a great option for both sides.
2. Houston Texans
If Deshaun Watson’s situation doesn’t get solved, then would the Texans look for a different quarterback? Sure, Davis Mills actually improved as the year went on, but we all know that new regimes mean new quarterbacks. Lovie Smith might not want to spend his first year with an unproven player.
The Colts will not trade Wentz to the Texans, so Houston would need a release here. Still, it’s an interesting option, especially considering that Smith saw Wentz’s biggest deficiencies as he coached against him twice in 2021. He’d know how to set up a good offense.
#Colts are leaning toward trading Carson Wentz before the remaining $7 million of his $22 million base salary becomes guaranteed on March 19, per @mortreport. Three years left, last two 2 are easy to move past for an acquiring team that won't give up much for him (hi, #Steelers)

3. Pittsburgh Steelers
With Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement, there’s an open spot for starting quarterback for the Steelers. What if Wentz is the right guy for the job? He reminds Ben Roethlisberger as a strong-armed, tall quarterback, and he’d have a great defense to help him.
I don’t think the Steelers would like to stick with Mason Rudolph for 2022, so Wentz is a dark-horse option.
