Luis Castillo To Start Game 1 Against Blue Jays

Seattle Mariners skipper Scott Servais said the team will go with right-hander Luis Castillo in Game 1 of the Wild-Card Series on Friday on the road against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Mariners are planning to use left-hander Robbie Ray in Game 2 and young right-hander Logan Gilbert in a Game 3, if necessary. Castillo became Seattle's ace when they acquired him from the Cincinnati Reds at the trade deadline. The 29-year-old All-Star went 4-2 with a 3.17 ERA (2.91 FIP), a 1.10 WHIP, 77 strikeouts and just 17 walks in 65 1/3 innings in his 11 starts in Seattle. He faced Toronto once this year and allowed two earned runs on seven hits while walking none and striking out five in six innings pitched in a loss.

Seattle Mariners Agree To Five-Year Extension With Luis Castillo

The Seattle Mariners and starting pitcher Luis Castillo have agreed to a five-year, $108 million contract extension, which includes a sixth year vesting option. After the Mariners sent four prospects to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for Castillo, they obviously wanted to lock him up. With this contract they do just that, making him a key part of their rotation for the next half decade. The 29-year-old has continued his stellar season since the trade, posting a 3-2 record, 2.83 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 64:13 K:BB ratio over 54 innings pitched. Because of park factors and team context, this extension should keep Castillo's value higher than if he were to stay with the Reds heading into next season.
