Joey Wendle On Red Sox's Radar
The Athletic's Chad Jennings reported Tuesday that the Boston Red Sox have Miami Marlins' infielder Joey Wendle on their radar as a potential external option to fill in for Trevor Story (elbow) as he recovers from an internal bracing procedure of the UCL in his right elbow. The 33-year-old bats left-handed and spent time at second base, shortstop, and third base in 2022. Offensively, he slashed .259/.297/.360 with three home runs, 32 RBI, and 12 stolen bases in 371 plate appearances. A move from the Marlins' lineup to the Red Sox's wouldn't be a huge upgrade, and Wendle's fantasy value is almost solely derived from his stolen base potential.

Miami Marlins infielder Joey Wendle (hamstring) will resume running on Friday and said he expects to return this season despite going on the injured list for a hamstring injury. Wendle was put on the injured list on Monday with left hamstring tendonitis, and he'll be eligible to return on Sept. 29. But with so little time left in the regular season, fantasy managers in single-year leagues can likely toss him aside to the waiver wire the rest of the way. The 32-year-old left-handed hitter had trouble staying healthy in his first year in Miami, and he currently has a slash line of .258/.297/.366 with only three home runs, 31 RBI, 26 runs scored and 12 stolen bases in his 325 at-bats.

The Miami Marlins placed infielder Joey Wendle (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list on Thursday with left hamstring tendonitis. The Fish also put left-hander Trevor Rogers (lat) on the 15-day injured list with a left lat strain and recalled pitchers Braxton Garrett and Peyton Burdick from Triple-A Jacksonville. Garrett will likely start on Friday. Wendle's IL stint is retroactive to Sept. 19. The 32-year-old veteran had missed the team's last three games, and with time running out in the 2022 season, he may have played his last game in 2022. Expect to see Jordan Groshans and Charles Leblanc battle for playing time in Miami's infield with Wendle on the shelf. Wendle has played in only 95 games in his first year in Miami, hitting .258/.297/.366 with only three home runs, 31 RBI, 26 runs and 12 stolen bases in 348 plate appearances.

Miami Marlins infielder Joey Wendle (core) is not in the starting lineup on Thursday against the Philadelphia Phillies in the series finale. Wendle is dealing with a minor right core issue and is expected to return to the lineup at some point this weekend. He last played on Monday. With Wendle still sideline, rookie Jordan Groshans is making his third start at the keystone on Thursday and will hit eighth in the batting order against Phillies right-hander Noah Syndergaard. Groshans will be making only his third major-league start after recently being called up from the minors. So far, he's gone 3-for-6 with three singles. The 22-year-old has become a hit-over-power prospect, but he's worth adding in deeper leagues if he continues to play regularly to close out the 2022 season.
