    Reds Release Mike Moustakas

    The Cincinnati Reds released infielder Mike Moustakas on Thursday after designating him for assignment on Dec. 22 when the team signed catcher Curt Casali. Moustakas went unclaimed on waivers and is now free to sign with any team he so chooses. The 34-year-old left-handed slugger finished the 2022 season on the injured list with a calf injury that caused him to miss the final six weeks. In 78 games with Cincinnati, he hit a weak .214/.295/.345 with a .640 OPS, seven home runs, 25 RBI, 30 runs scored and two stolen bases in 285 plate appearances. The three-time All-Star hasn't played in over 78 games since his final season in Milwaukee in 2019. Moose will hope to latch on with another team and bounce back in 2023, but at this point in his career, he's likely to be a platoon infield bat in a best-case scenario.

    The Cincinnati Reds designated infielder Mike Moustakas for assignment on Thursday to make room on the roster for recently signed catcher Curt Casali. Moustakas, a three-time All-Star, played in 78 games for the Reds last season and hit just .214/.295/.345 with a .640 OPS, seven home runs, 25 RBI, 30 runs scored and two stolen bases in 285 plate appearances. He also missed the final two months of the campaign due to a calf injury. Cincinnati is cutting bait on the 34-year-old left-handed slugger despite still owing him $22 million. It speaks volumes to what kind of player Moose has become toward the end of his MLB career. Since he was an All-Star in his last year in Milwaukee in 2019, Moustakas has slashed .216/.300/.383 with a .683 OPS, 21 home runs, 74 RBI, 64 runs and three steals in three seasons with the Reds.

    Mike Moustakas Goes Back On Injured List

    The Cincinnati Reds placed third baseman Mike Moustakas (calf) on the 10-day injured list with a left calf strain on Saturday and selected infielder Colin Moran's contract from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move. Moustakas' injured list stint is retroactive to Wednesday. The 33-year-old missed the last three games with his injury and will go back on the shelf. Fantasy managers in deep mixed leagues shouldn't feel compelled to hold Moose the rest of the way, as he's hit just .214/.295/.345 with seven home runs, 25 RBI, 30 runs scored and two stolen bases in his 252 at-bats for the Reds this year. Shortstop Kyle Farmer has been shifted to the hot corner in recent days, although Moran could find his way into the lineup occasionally with Matt Reynolds (hip) also on the shelf.

    Reds Activate Mike Moustakas From Injured List

    The Cincinnati Reds activated third baseman Mike Moustakas (calf) from the 10-day injured list on Friday and placed first baseman Joey Votto (shoulder) on the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move. The team also moved infielder Donovan Solano from the paternity list to the restricted list. Moustakas is at first base and is hitting cleanup in his return on Friday against Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Bryse Wilson. The 33-year-old has done very little for fantasy managers in 2022, hitting just .200/.289/.326 with six home runs, 21 RBI, 26 runs scored and two stolen bases in 230 at-bats. He should remain on the waiver wire in mixed leagues.
