Cubs Come To Agreement With Eric Hosmer

The Chicago Cubs agreed to a major-league deal with free-agent first baseman Eric Hosmer on Wednesday, according to sources. Terms of the deal haven't been made available yet, but it wouldn't be surprising if it was just a one-year deal. The 33-year-old began last season with the San Diego Padres before being shipped to the Boston Red Sox at the Aug. 2 trade deadline. He ended the season with a bum back and was designated for assignment and then released at the end of December. He'll likely be the team's starting first baseman to begin the 2023 campaign, but his power is declining and he won't be all that attractive at the position in shallow mixed fantasy leagues. Hosmer finished 2022 by hitting .268/.334/.382 with a .716 OPS, only eight home runs, 44 RBI and 38 runs scored in 104 total games.

Cubs Close To Deal With Eric Hosmer

The Chicago Cubs are close to agreeing to a deal with free-agent first baseman Eric Hosmer on Tuesday. Hosmer was designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox and then released at the end of December, but it looks like he's going to find a new home in the National League Central. The 33-year-old left-handed hitter continues to see his power decline, and he finished the 2022 campaign by hitting .268/.334/.382 with a .716 OPS, eight home runs, 44 RBI and 38 runs scored in 419 plate appearances and 104 games with the San Diego Padres and Red Sox. If he lands with the Cubbies, he could be used in the strong side of a platoon at first base against right-handed pitching, although at this point in his career he's not very attractive in shallow mixed fantasy leagues at the first base position.

    Red Sox Release Eric Hosmer

The Boston Red Sox released first baseman Eric Hosmer on Thursday, according to a source. Boston had designated Hosmer for assignment last week, but he obviously didn't attract any attention and will now be free to sign with any team this offseason. The 33-year-old was traded by the San Diego Padres to Boston at the Aug. 2 trade deadline and finished 2022 with a .268/.334/.382 slash line, a .716 OPS, eight home runs, 44 RBI and 38 runs scored in 419 plate appearances and 104 games between both teams. All eight of his long balls came in San Diego, and he hit just .244 in 14 games with the BoSox to end the season while also going on the injured list with a back injury late in the season. Wherever Hosmer surfaces, he won't have much fantasy appeal in normal fantasy leagues as a first baseman with limited power.

Red Sox Designate Eric Hosmer For Assignment

The Boston Red Sox designated first baseman Eric Hosmer for assignment on Friday. Hosmer was traded from the San Diego Padres to the Red Sox at the Aug. 2 deadline, but there's a good chance he won't be returning to the organization in 2023. The 33-year-old hit a combined .268/.334/.382 with a .716 OPS, eight home runs, 44 RBI and 38 runs scored in a combined 104 games with the Friars and BoSox in 2022. He barely played down the stretch for Boston due to a back injury and will likely be looking for work on the open market soon. At his position, Hosmer is hard to get behind in fantasy because of his lack of pop. Triston Casas should be expected to see most of the playing time at first base in Beantown in 2023.

Eric Hosmer Reportedly Not Opting Out Of Contract

New York Post's Jon Heyman reported Monday that Boston Red Sox first baseman Eric Hosmer will not be opting out of the remaining three years of his eight-year, $144 million contract. Hosmer is owed $39 million over the final three years of his current contract, most of which will be paid by his former team, the San Diego Padres. The 33-year-old was traded during this past season and put together his second consecutive disappointing campaign, slashing .268/.334/.382 with eight home runs and 44 RBI in 419 plate appearances. As such, it is not surprising that he will continue with his current contract. Hosmer's decreased power production has limited his fantasy value and will continue to do so if he cannot turn things around.

Red Sox Reinstate Eric Hosmer From Injured List

The Boston Red Sox reinstated first baseman Eric Hosmer (back) from the 10-day injured list on Monday and recalled left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez from the minors. In corresponding moves, the team optioned right-hander Josh Winckowski and placed outfielder Rob Refsnyder (back) on the 10-day injured list with lower-back spasms. Hosmer will return after missing 38 games, but he won't be in the starting lineup on Monday against the Tampa Bay Rays and right-hander Tyler Glasnow. Rookie Triston Casas has been swinging it well and will get another start at the cold corner on Monday, but Hosmer should see action in at least one of the two remaining regular season games for Boston.

Eric Hosmer Likely To Be Activated On Monday

Boston Red Sox first baseman Eric Hosmer (back) is expected to be activated off the injured list on Monday, according to manager Alex Cora. The left-handed slugger has been out since August 20 due to inflammation in his back. Luckily, it sounds like Hosmer will be ready in time to play during the final series of the regular season. The 32-year-old is hitting .267/.333/.381 with eight homers and 44 RBI through 102 games this season.

Eric Hosmer Could Return Later This Week

Boston Red Sox first baseman Eric Hosmer (back) is now on track to play some games down the stretch, possibly as soon as later this week. Top prospect Triston Casas has been getting most of the playing time at first base, but Hosmer could get some games in the field and also some at designated hitter when he returns from the injured list. Hosmer has played in just 12 games since being acquired from the San Diego Padres at the Aug. 2 trade deadline. "Moving better," said manager Alex Cora. "There's a chance we might get him toward the end of the week. There's a good chance. He's improved and is making strides. That's good." Hosmer has gone just 9-for-40 (.225) with no homers and four RBI in his 12 games for Boston before going on the IL.

Eric Hosmer Still Hopes To Return This Year

Boston Red Sox first baseman Eric Hosmer (back) hasn't given up hope of playing again this season. Skipper Alex Cora said Hosmer might resume baseball activities on Tuesday. It will be a matter of how Hosmer responds to increased activities and if there is enough time for him to ramp back up by the end of the 2022 season. The 32-year-old left-handed hitter hasn't played since Aug. 20 due to lower back inflammation. In his 12 games with the Red Sox since being acquired from the San Diego Padres at the Aug. 2 trade deadline, Hosmer has hit just .225/.311/.300 with no home runs, four RBI and six runs scored in 45 plate appearances. The Red Sox have been using a platoon of Christian Arroyo and Triston Casas at first base recently.

Eric Hosmer Shut Down With Back Pain

Boston Red Sox first baseman Eric Hosmer (back) has been shut down with lingering back pain. Hosmer went on the injured list with lower back inflammation just over a week ago, and now it's looking like he might miss the rest of the 2022 season. There's no timetable for when the 32-year-old left-handed hitter will resume baseball activities. If you are in need of a roster spot in deeper fantasy leagues, it's probably safe to drop Hosmer at this point. In 12 games since being acquired from the San Diego Padres at the Aug. 2 trade deadline, Hosmer has gone just 9-for-40 (.225) with no home runs, four RBI and six runs scored. Franchy Cordero and Bobby Dalbec will continue splitting playing time at first base with Hosmer sidelined.

Red Sox Put Eric Hosmer On The Injured List

The Boston Red Sox placed first baseman Eric Hosmer (back) on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday and recalled outfielder Franchy Cordero from the minors in a corresponding move. Hosmer is dealing with lower back inflammation and won't be eligible to return to the team until Aug. 31. Since being dealt to Boston by the San Diego Padres at the Aug. 2 trade deadline, Hosmer has gone just 9-for-40 (.225) with no home runs, four RBI and six runs scored in 12 games. Overall, the 32-year-old veteran first baseman has hit .267/.333/.381 with eight home runs, 44 RBI and 38 runs scored in 414 plate appearances over 102 games in 2022. Bobby Dalbec will likely platoon with Cordero at the cold corner now that Hosmer is on the shelf.

Eric Hosmer Not Starting On Sunday

Boston Red Sox first baseman Eric Hosmer (back) is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. He was forced to exit early during Saturday's contest due to lower back tightness. It sounds like the Red Sox are going to play it safe and have Hosmer sit this one out. Bobby Dalbec will make the start at first base and bat eighth against right-hander Dean Kremer on Sunday night.
