Terms of the deal haven't been made available yet, but it wouldn't be surprising if it was just a one-year deal. The 33-year-old began last season with the San Diego Padres before being shipped to the Boston Red Sox at the Aug. 2 trade deadline. He ended the season with a bum back and was designated for assignment and then released at the end of December. He'll likely be the team's starting first baseman to begin the 2023 campaign, but his power is declining and he won't be all that attractive at the position in shallow mixed fantasy leagues. Hosmer finished 2022 by hitting .268/.334/.382 with a .716 OPS, only eight home runs, 44 RBI and 38 runs scored in 104 total games.

The 33-year-old left-handed hitter continues to see his power decline, and he finished the 2022 campaign by hitting .268/.334/.382 with a .716 OPS, eight home runs, 44 RBI and 38 runs scored in 419 plate appearances and 104 games with the San Diego Padres and Red Sox. If he lands with the Cubbies, he could be used in the strong side of a platoon at first base against right-handed pitching, although at this point in his career he's not very attractive in shallow mixed fantasy leagues at the first base position.

  The Boston Red Sox released first baseman Eric Hosmer on Thursday, according to a source. Boston had designated Hosmer for assignment last week, but he obviously didn't attract any attention and will now be free to sign with any team this offseason. The 33-year-old was traded by the San Diego Padres to Boston at the Aug. 2 trade deadline and finished 2022 with a .268/.334/.382 slash line, a .716 OPS, eight home runs, 44 RBI and 38 runs scored in 419 plate appearances and 104 games between both teams. All eight of his long balls came in San Diego, and he hit just .244 in 14 games with the BoSox to end the season while also going on the injured list with a back injury late in the season. Wherever Hosmer surfaces, he won't have much fantasy appeal in normal fantasy leagues as a first baseman with limited power.

  The Boston Red Sox designated first baseman Eric Hosmer for assignment on Friday. Hosmer was traded from the San Diego Padres to the Red Sox at the Aug. 2 deadline, but there's a good chance he won't be returning to the organization in 2023. The 33-year-old hit a combined .268/.334/.382 with a .716 OPS, eight home runs, 44 RBI and 38 runs scored in a combined 104 games with the Friars and BoSox in 2022. He barely played down the stretch for Boston due to a back injury and will likely be looking for work on the open market soon. At his position, Hosmer is hard to get behind in fantasy because of his lack of pop. Triston Casas should be expected to see most of the playing time at first base in Beantown in 2023.

  Eric Hosmer Reportedly Not Opting Out Of Contract

  New York Post's Jon Heyman reported Monday that Boston Red Sox first baseman Eric Hosmer will not be opting out of the remaining three years of his eight-year, $144 million contract. Hosmer is owed $39 million over the final three years of his current contract, most of which will be paid by his former team, the San Diego Padres. The 33-year-old was traded during this past season and put together his second consecutive disappointing campaign, slashing .268/.334/.382 with eight home runs and 44 RBI in 419 plate appearances. As such, it is not surprising that he will continue with his current contract. Hosmer's decreased power production has limited his fantasy value and will continue to do so if he cannot turn things around.

  Red Sox Reinstate Eric Hosmer From Injured List

  The Boston Red Sox reinstated first baseman Eric Hosmer (back) from the 10-day injured list on Monday and recalled left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez from the minors. In corresponding moves, the team optioned right-hander Josh Winckowski and placed outfielder Rob Refsnyder (back) on the 10-day injured list with lower-back spasms. Hosmer will return after missing 38 games, but he won't be in the starting lineup on Monday against the Tampa Bay Rays and right-hander Tyler Glasnow. Rookie Triston Casas has been swinging it well and will get another start at the cold corner on Monday, but Hosmer should see action in at least one of the two remaining regular season games for Boston.
