| | New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo (back) has been getting headaches after receiving an epidural injection for his injured back, but he is improving. Skipper Aaron Boone said that Rizzo might be able to rejoin the team on Wednesday. Rizzo had his epidural injection last Friday after dealing with back issues last week. The 33-year-old also visited with a specialist, but it appears that he's improving and could be back in the lineup this week. The Yankees are still hoping he'll avoid a trip to the injured list. In his absence, DJ LeMahieu has mostly been playing first base, but Marwin Gonzalez will man the cold corner on Monday against the Minnesota Twins and right-hander Chris Archer. Rizzo is hitting just .225 this year, but he also has a .339 on-base percentage, an .832 OPS, 30 home runs and 71 RBI. |
| | New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that outfielder Harrison Bader (foot) will be doing a "full ramp-up" on Monday, and there is a target for his minor league rehab assignment to begin on Sept. 13, but the date could be moved up. Bader started hitting off a tee last week after recently resuming baseball activities. The 28-year-old hasn't played since June 26 and has yet to make his Yankees debut after being acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals at the Aug. 2 trade deadline. He'll offer the Yankees plenty of speed on the base paths and excellent defense in center field, but by the time he returns, he'll be of little use in fantasy to close out the regular season. In 246 at-bats in 2022, he's hit .256/.303/.370 with five home runs, 21 RBI, 35 runs scored and 15 stolen bases. |
| | New York Yankees outfielder Andrew Benintendi (wrist) is tentatively scheduled to have surgery on his hand on Tuesday, according to skipper Aaron Boone. The surgery will fix the hook of the hamate bone in his right wrist and is expected to keep him sidelined for the rest of the 2022 regular season. It remains to be seen if Benintendi will be able to return if the Yanks make a long postseason run. The 28-year-old played in 33 games for New York after being acquired from the Kansas City Royals, and he had gone 29-for-114 (.254) with two home runs, 12 RBI, 14 runs scored and four stolen bases in 33 games in pinstripes. With Benintendi out for the foreseeable future, Aaron Hicks, Estevan Florial, Tim Locastro and Marwin Gonzalez will battle for playing time in left field in the Bronx. |
| | New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton (ankle, foot) fouled a ball off the top of his ankle/foot and was removed from the game early on Monday against the Minnesota Twins, but skipper Aaron Boone said that X-rays came back negative. Stanton initially stayed in the game before exiting in the eighth inning. He went 0-for-3 in the contest while serving as the designated hitter before departing. Fantasy managers should consider the 32-year-old slugger to be day-to-day for now, but don't be surprised if he's not in the starting lineup on Tuesday. Entering Monday's game, Stanton was slashing .216/.300/.457 with 24 home runs, 64 RBI and 40 runs scored in 324 at-bats this season. |
| | New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino (lat) said he'll make his next minor league rehab start for Double-A Somerset on Wednesday. It will be his second rehab start after he threw two scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no walks for Single-A Tampa last Thursday. Barring any setbacks after Wednesday's rehab outing, Severino is expected to rejoin the Yankees starting rotation. The 28-year-old right-hander has pitched in the big leagues since July 13, so he's likely to be on an innings cap in his first game back, making him more risky in fantasy circles. Before his injury, he was 5-3 with a 3.45 ERA (4.03 FIP), a 1.07 WHIP, 95 strikeouts and 25 walks in 86 innings over 16 starts. Severino deserves to be rostered in all leagues, but he won't have much time to make a significant impact for fantasy managers the rest of the way. |
