Atlanta Braves Injuries
Mike Soroka Won't Have Restrictions Next Spring
As things currently stand, Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Mike Soroka (Achilles) will come to spring training next year without any restrictions. Soroka will be looking to prove that he can be effective after having surgery on his right Achilles tendon twice. The 25-year-old also dealt with right elbow soreness while pitching in the minor leagues and landed on the injured list at Triple-A Gwinnett in late September. In six starts with High-A Rome and Gwinnett this year, Soroka had a 5.40 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 25 strikeouts and seven walks in 25 innings pitched. He was an All-Star in his second big-league season in 2019, but he's made only three starts in the last two years due to Achilles injuries, which will keep his fantasy cost down entering 2023 drafts.
Kirby Yates Should Be Ready For Spring Training
Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Kirby Yates (elbow) is not expected to have any restrictions heading into spring training. The right-hander was left off the NLDS roster after experiencing right elbow inflammation. Yates is working his way back from his second Tommy John surgery. The 35-year-old threw seven innings for the Braves this season. It's unlikely that he'll be used as a closer in Atlanta. However, he will certainly boost the bullpen next season, assuming he can stay healthy.
Mike Soroka Won't Have Restrictions
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Mike Soroka (Achilles) won't have any restrictions heading into spring training, according to GM Alex Anthopoulos. This is great news for the right-hander who hasn't pitched in the MLB since 2020. Soroka has torn his Achilles tendon twice and suffered a season-ending elbow injury in late September. The 25-year-old was excellent when he first came into the MLB in 2019. The expectation is that the team will somewhat limit his workload considering he hasn't pitched in years.
Charlie Morton Removed During Saturday's Start
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton (arm) was removed early during Saturday's start against the Philadelphia Phillies. The veteran right-hander exited with the training staff after finishing the third inning. The 38-year-old was struck by a comebacker on the arm in the second inning. The team hasn't given an update on his status, but there should be more news soon. The Braves have been eliminated from the postseason, so Morton will get the entire offseason to rest and recover.
Spencer Strider Starting Game 3 Against Phillies
Atlanta Braves rookie right-hander Spencer Strider (oblique) is set to start Game 3 of the National League Division Series on Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies. Strider's last start came on Sept. 18 and he's been dealing with a strained oblique muscle on his left side, so it's unclear how many innings he'll be able to go in this one. He will be a DFS pitcher to avoid on Friday's slate while coming off the injury. The 23-year-old was excellent for the Braves during the regular season, going 11-5 with a 2.67 ERA (1.83 FIP), a 0.99 WHIP, 202 strikeouts and 45 walks in 131 2/3 innings over 31 outings (20 starts), so the Braves will be hoping he can be effective for a handful of innings to start Game 3 on Friday. In four appearances (three starts), he held the Phils to three earned runs while striking out 34 in 21 1/3 innings in 2022.
Spencer Strider Was Available In Relief In Game 2
Atlanta Braves rookie right-hander Spencer Strider (oblique) was available out of the bullpen in the Game 2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Division Series on Wednesday. Manager Brian Snitker still hasn't announced his Game 3 starter for Friday, so it's possible that Strider will get the nod, although it's probably more likely that veteran right-hander Charlie Morton will start. Strider finished the regular season on the injured list with an oblique strain and hasn't made a start since Sept. 18, so he'd have a very short leash if he were to start in this series. The 23-year-old was excellent in his first full major-league season, though, going 11-5 with a 2.67 ERA (1.83 FIP), a 0..99 WHIP, 202 strikeouts and 45 walks in 131 2/3 frames over 31 outings (20 starts).
No Structural Damage For Ronald Acuna Jr.
Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. (elbow) doesn't have any structural damage to his right elbow after he was hit by a pitch in the Game 2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Division Series on Wednesday. Acuna was in some pain but managed to stay in the game and went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a strikeout in the 3-0 shutout victory. With a day off on Thursday to rest up, Acuna should be back in right field and in the leadoff spot for Game 3 of the series on Friday against Philadelphia. The 24-year-old superstar outfielder is now 4-for-7 with a double, two walks and two runs scored in the first two games of the series, which is knotted at 1-1 heading to Philadelphia for the weekend.
Luke Jackson Resumes Throwing
Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Luke Jackson (elbow) wrote in his personal Twitter account that he threw for the first time in six months on Wednesday since having Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on April 13. Jackson is slowly working his way back from elbow reconstruction and is likely to be limited when spring training begins next year, but barring any setbacks, he should be able to return to Atlanta's bullpen at some point in 2023. The 31-year-old right-hander is also scheduled to become a free agent this winter, so he may have to prove his health first before another team invests in him. Jackson was excellent for the Braves last year, posting a 1.98 ERA (3.66 FIP), a 1.16 WHIP and 70 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings pitched in the regular season.
Tyler Matzek Having Tommy John Surgery
Atlanta Braves left-handed reliever Tyler Matzek (elbow) is having Tommy John surgery, according to skipper Brian Snitker. It's the reason why Matzek was left off the roster for the National League Division Series this week against the Philadelphia Phillies, and he'll likely miss all of the 2023 season as a result. The 31-year-old southpaw wasn't nearly as good in 2022 as he was during the team's World Series run last year. In 43 2/3 innings during the regular season, he went 4-2 with a 3.50 ERA (4.49 FIP), a 1.26 WHIP, one save and 36 strikeouts in his 42 relief outings for Atlanta.
Spencer Strider Included On NLDS Roster
Atlanta Braves rookie starting pitcher Spencer Strider (oblique) is on the team's roster for the National League Division Series this week against the Philadelphia Phillies. Strider landed on the injured list in mid-September with an oblique strain, and it was uncertain if he'd be ready for the Division Series. The 23-year-old right-hander will be on the roster, but it remains to be seen if he'll be used as a starter or reliever due to his recent injury. He was excellent for the Braves in his first full MLB season in 2022, going 11-5 with a 2.67 ERA (1.83 FIP), a 0.99 WHIP, 202 strikeouts and 45 walks in 131 2/3 innings over 31 outings (20 starts). Strider went 4-0 against the Phillies this year while giving up three runs on seven hits over 21 1/3 innings in four appearances (three starts).
Braves Sign Spencer Strider To Six-Year Extension
The Atlanta Braves signed rookie right-hander Spencer Strider (oblique) to a six-year, $75 million contract extension on Monday that runs through the 2028 season. The deal will be worth $92 million over seven years if a $22 million club option for 2029 is exercised. The Braves are optimistic that Strider will be ready for the National League Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies, which begins on Tuesday. He threw a good bullpen session on Sunday and will be considered for the roster if he checks out fine Tuesday. Atlanta will be hoping to have Strider in this series. The 23-year-old was 4-0 against the Phillies this year with a 1.27 ERA, 34 strikeouts and seven walks in 21 1/3 innings over four games (three starts).
Ozzie Albies Unlikely To Play In NLDS
Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies (finger) is out of his cast and is building back his hand strength. He'll be with the team for the National League Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies this week, but it's unlikely that he'll be on the active roster. Albies is dealing with a fractured pinkie finger and remains on the 10-day injured list. The 25-year-old hasn't played for over three weeks, and the Braves will be hoping that he can be ready if they advance to the NL Championship Series next week. If Albies is unable to make the roster for the NLDS, it's likely that Orlando Arcia will continue to handle the regular second base duties for the Braves against the Phillies this week.
Spencer Strider Plays Catch Tuesday
Atlanta Braves right-hander Spencer Strider (oblique) played catch on flat ground on Tuesday for the first time since going on the injured list. However, the Braves won't know how much Strider has progressed until he gets back on a mound as his throwing progression continues. The 23-year-old hasn't pitched since Sept. 18 due to an oblique strain, and it remains to be seen if he'll be available for the team's starting rotation if they lock up the National League East division and won't have to play until next week's NL Division Series. He has been lights-out for the Braves in his first full big-league season in 2022, going 11-5 with a 2.67 ERA (1.83 FIP), a 0.99 WHIP, 202 strikeouts and 45 walks in 131 2/3 innings over 31 outings (20 starts).
Ozzie Albies Trying To Return For Postseason
Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies (pinkie) took ground balls with a smaller cast on Sept. 30 that allowed him more mobility and the chance to get back on the field and stay in shape with the hopes of making a return during the postseason. Albies fractured is right pinkie finger sliding into second base against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sept. 17 in just his second game since returning from a fractured left foot earlier in the season. He will not play in the final three-game series of the regular season this week against the Miami Marlins, but there's still a chance he could contribute in the playoffs, barring any setbacks. The 25-year-old has just 247 at-bats in 2022, hitting .247/.294/.409 with eight homers, 35 RBI, 36 runs and three stolen bases.
Kirby Yates Continues To Make Progress
Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Kirby Yates (elbow) threw a bullpen session before the start of the three-game series against the New York Mets on Friday, Sept. 30, and he felt fine after the session. It's too early to know whether Yates might pitch again this year, but he continues to make progress to help him feel confident that his elbow won't be a lingering issue this offseason as he distances himself from his second Tommy John surgery. He felt discomfort after tossing a scoreless inning against the Mariners on Sept. 10 and was placed on the 15-day injured list after his elbow continued to bother him when he played catch on Sept. 16. The 35-year-old shouldn't be expected to contribute out of the Braves bullpen in the postseason.
Spencer Strider Unlikely To Be Ready Before NLDS
Atlanta Braves right-hander Spencer Strider (oblique) is expected to resume throwing again in the final days of the regular season early this week, but he's unlikely to be available before the National League Division Series that begins on Oct. 11. He first felt left oblique soreness in his Sept. 18 start against the Philadelphia Phillies and was put on the injured list when he continued to feel discomfort before beginning a side session on Sept. 23. The NL Rookie of the Year candidate has gone 11-5 this year with a 2.67 ERA (1.83 FIP), a 0.99 WHIP and a 202:45 K:BB over 131 2/3 innings and 31 outings (20 starts) this year. The good news is that after sweeping the division-rival New York Mets this past weekend, the Braves control their own destiny now as far as winning the NL East and getting a first-round bye in the playoffs.
Max Fried Feeling Better
Atlanta Braves left-hander Max Fried (illness) said he was feeling better when he arrived at Truist Park on Sunday to receive treatment and play catch for about five minutes. Fried was limited to five innings in his start on Friday against the New York Mets due to a stomach bug. If the National League East hasn't been decided, Fried could start the regular season finale on Wednesday against the Miami Marlins. But if he isn't needed, he would be lined up to start Game 1 of the wild-card series or the NL Division series. Before leaving his start on Friday, the 28-year-old southpaw allowed a run on four hits while striking out three on 71 pitches.
Max Fried Leaves Friday's Start With Illness
Atlanta Braves left-hander Max Fried was removed from his Friday start against the New York Mets with an illness. Fried allowed one run on four hits over five innings while striking out three and walking none. He was replaced on the mound in the sixth inning by veteran right-hander Collin McHugh. Fried was caught on TV cameras throwing up during the contest and wound up throwing just 71 pitches. Fried has a 13-7 record, 2.48 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and 170 strikeouts over 185 1/3 innings of work in 2022.
Spencer Strider Not Throwing Yet
Atlanta Braves right-hander Spencer Strider (oblique) has yet to resume throwing. Strider went on the injured list last week with a left oblique strain. The recovery has been slow going for the hard-throwing rookie, who felt something in the injured oblique last Friday when he attempted to throw. Atlanta may be heading into the postseason without Strider, who has been one of their better pitchers in 2022. Strider has made 20 starts this year, posting an 11-5 record, 2.67 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 202 strikeouts in 131 2/3 innings of work.
Ronald Acuna Jr. Returns To Starting Lineup Monday
Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. (back) is back in right field and is hitting leadoff on Monday against the Washington Nationals and right-hander Cory Abbott. Acuna hadn't started the team's previous four games due to mid-back tightness, but he had two at-bats as a pinch-hitter on Sunday against the Philadelphia Phillies and is now back in there for fantasy managers to begin the week. Get the 24-year-old All-Star back into all starting lineups in season-long leagues. In 19 games so far in September, he's gone 20-for-76 (.263) with two home runs, 11 RBI, nine runs scored and three stolen bases. The fact that he's back in right field means that his back issues are hopefully a thing of the past.
Ronald Acuna Jr. Appears As Pinch-Hitter Sunday
Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. (back) went 1-for-1 with an RBI, run scored and a walk in two plate appearances as a pinch-hitter off the bench in Sunday's 8-7 extra-inning win over the Philadelphia Phillies. The 24-year-old has been dealing with mid-back tightness and hasn't started a game for the Braves since Sept. 21, but the fact that he entered the game on Sunday and got two at-bats is a good sign that he might be able to return on Monday for the start of a series against the Washington Nationals. He's been in and out of the lineup at times this year due to various injuries. Acuna is hitting .263 (20-for-76) with two home runs, 11 RBI, nine runs scored and three stolen bases in 19 games in September.
Braves Place Spencer Strider On The Injured List
The Atlanta Braves placed right-hander Spencer Strider (oblique) on the 15-day injured list on Saturday with strained left oblique and optioned infielder Rylan Bannon to Triple-A Gwinnett. In corresponding moves, the team reinstated infielder Ehire Adrianza (quadriceps) from the 10-day injured list and recalled right-hander Alan Rangel. Strider's IL stint is backdated to Sept. 21. The 23-year-old will miss the rest of the regular season, which is terrible news for fantasy managers, as Strider has been excellent in his second MLB season. Strider will finish 11-5 with a 2.67 ERA (1.83 FIP), a 0.99 WHIP and 202 strikeouts in 131 2/3 innings over 31 outings (20 starts). Bryce Elder is the leading candidate to take his spot in the rotation the rest of the regular season.
Ronald Acuna Jr. Out On Friday
Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. (back) is not in the team's starting lineup on Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies. Acuna missed the game on Thursday with mid-back tightness and will now miss his second straight game. It remains to be seen if he'll be available at all this weekend against Philadelphia, but fantasy managers will be hoping that the All-Star outfielder will be able to return soon. Robbie Grossman is back in right field and is hitting ninth on Friday against Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola. The 33-year-old veteran slugger won't have much DFS upside in the nine-hole, and he's hitting just .210/.312/.313 on the season with seven home runs, 44 RBI, 39 runs scored and six stolen bases in 390 at-bats.
Ronald Acuna Jr. Iffy To Start Friday
Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. (back) was scratched ahead of Thursday's contest versus the Phillies and the club is "unsure" about his availability for Friday's matchup. The 24-year-old felt some mid-back tightness following batting practice, and manager Brian Snitker stated that something "banged on him" after hitting in the cage afterwards. It's a situation to monitor for fantasy managers heading into the weekend, so be sure to check back for an update prior to tomorrow's game.
Ronald Acuna Jr. Scratched With Back Tightness Thursday
Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. (back) was scratched from the starting lineup on Thursday against the Philadelphia Phillies with mid-back tightness. Until we know more about Acuna's condition, fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day. Robbie Grossman is moving to right field and will bat ninth, while Marcell Ozuna is now starting in left field and hitting eighth against Phillies left-hander Ranger Suarez. Hopefully, Ozuna's injury isn't serious enough to keep him out for the remainder of the 2022 regular season as the Braves try to take the National League East division from the New York Mets. Stay tuned for more information on Acuna's injury later on Thursday night or early Friday.
Mike Soroka Lands On Injured List In Minors
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Mike Soroka (elbow) is being placed on the injured list in the minor leagues at Triple-A Gwinnett with right elbow soreness, according to a source. The good news is that there is no structural damage in his arm, but he'll now miss the rest of the season. The 25-year-old had yet to pitch in 2022 while recovering from a torn Achilles, but he was hoping to return later this month in a relief role for Atlanta. Soroka hasn't made a major-league start since 2020, but he was an All-Star in 2019 in just his second MLB campaign. In six starts for High-A Rome and Gwinnett on his rehab assignment, he allowed 15 earned runs on 21 hits (three homers) while walking seven and striking out 25 in 25 innings pitched.
Spencer Strider Dealing With Sore Oblique
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Spencer Strider (oblique) is dealing with a sore oblique and will have his next start pushed back a few days. As a result, Bryce Elder will get the nod on Wednesday against the Washington Nationals, and left-hander Max Fried will face the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday. Strider was originally lined up to make his next start on Friday against the Phillies, but now it looks like he won't take the mound until early next week against the Nationals. The 23-year-old Strider has been a revelation for the Braves rotation this year, going 11-5 with a 2.67 ERA (1.83 FIP), a 0.99 WHIP, 202 strikeouts and 45 walks in 131 2/3 innings over 31 outings (20 starts). He'll be a must-start for fantasy managers next time he's out there.
Ozzie Albies Fractures Right Pinky Finger
Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies (finger) left Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies with a fractured right pinky finger. He initially injured his finger sliding into second base. The 25-year-old was reinstated from the 60-day injured list on Friday. With three weeks left in the season, Albies will most likely be out for the remainder of the year. Vaughn Grissom replaced Albie during Saturday's contest. Grissom will see an uptick in playing time while Albies is sidelined and is a speculative add in most leagues after slashing .304/.355/.482 with five homers and five stolen bases over 31 games in 2022.
Mike Soroka Has Rough Rehab Start Friday
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Mike Soroka (Achilles) had a minor league rehab start to forget on Friday night with Triple-A Gwinnett. In five innings of work, he allowed six earned runs on six hits (three homers surrendered) while walking one and striking out six batters. Soroka hasn't pitched at all this year in the majors, but he's now made six rehab appearances between Gwinnett and High-A Rome, posting a 5.40 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 25:7 K:BB in 25 innings pitched. The 25-year-old got beat up on Friday, but he's healthy and is expected to rejoin the Braves here soon to close out the regular season. Soroka hasn't pitched since 2020 for Atlanta, though, so if he does return, it's likely to be in a relief role.
Kirby Yates Heads Back To Injured List
Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Kirby Yates (elbow) was placed on the 15-day IL on Friday with right elbow inflammation. Tough news for the righty, who just came back from his second Tommy John surgery in August. In his nine appearances since his return, Yates has a 5.14 ERA and 1.57 WHIP with six strikeouts in seven innings. Yates has certainly gone through the ringer in regards to injuries, and it's hard to believe that he was a top end fantasy reliever just a few years ago.
Braves Reinstate Ozzie Albies From Injured List
The Atlanta Braves reinstated second baseman Ozzie Albies (foot) from the 60-day injured list on Friday. In corresponding moves, the club designated right-hander Jay Jackson for assignment and placed infielder Ehire Adrianza (quadriceps) on the 10-day injured list with a strained left quadriceps. Albies is finally back with the Braves after having surgery on July 15 for a broken right foot. The 25-year-old hit .333 with a home run, six RBI and four runs scored in seven minor league rehab games, and he should return to the starting lineup on Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies. Albies will serve as the club's everyday second baseman in his return, pushing rookie Vaughn Grissom to more of a bench role.
Ian Anderson Suffers Strained Oblique
Atlanta Braves right-hander Ian Anderson (oblique) strained his left oblique while pitching for Triple-A Gwinnett on Sept. 8 and will be out at least a month. It basically rules out any chance that he could have returned to Atlanta's rotation for the end of the regular season and even possibly the postseason now. Anderson was demoted to the minors last month when the Braves acquired righty Jake Odorizzi from the Houston Astros at the trade deadline. The 24-year-old had a 5.00 ERA (4.25 FIP), 1.51 WHIP and 97 K's in 22 starts for the Braves before being demoted. In his four starts at Gwinnett he hasn't been any better, surrendering 13 earned runs on 25 hits while walking 10 and striking out 23 in 21 2/3 frames.
Ozzie Albies Collects Five Hits In Tuesday's Rehab Game
Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies (foot) had a huge game at the plate in Tuesday's 5-4 win with Triple-A Gwinnett, going 5-for-5 with four singles, a walk-off solo home run, and three RBI. The 25-year-old has now played six rehab games at Triple-A and is hitting .348. It looks as though Albies is ready to go, so hopefully, he will be back with the Braves and fantasy managers soon. Albies slashed .244/.289/.405 with eight HR, 33 RBI, and three stolen bases before landing on the injured list. Fantasy managers should continue to look for updates on Albies' potential recall.
Ozzie Albies Goes Hitless In Rehab Game
Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies (foot) went 0-for-3 in three plate appearances in his minor league rehab game for Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday and is now 3-for-15 in four games played since starting his rehab assignment last week. Albies started the game at second base and hit leadoff for Gwinnett. The 25-year-old needs a lengthy rehab assignment since he hasn't played in the big leagues since June 13. Barring a setback, he should be back in Atlanta's everyday lineup by the middle of September. Albies won't have much time to produce for fantasy managers the rest of the way, but he should still be rostered everywhere. He was hitting .244/.289/.405 with eight homers, 33 RBI, 34 runs scored and three stolen bases in 242 at-bats before his injury.
Huascar Ynoa Undergoes Tommy John Surgery
Atlanta Braves right-hander Huascar Ynoa (elbow) underwent successful Tommy John surgery to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament in his right arm. Dr. Keith Meister performed the procedure in Arlington, Texas. The 24-year-old hadn't pitched in the minor leagues for Triple-A Gwinnett since Aug. 24, and now we know why. After going under the knife for elbow reconstruction, Ynoa will likely miss all of next season as well as the rest of the 2022 campaign. He made two starts for Atlanta this year, allowing 10 earned runs on 11 hits while striking out eight and walking six in 6 2/3 innings. In 18 outings (17 starts) for Gwinnett, Ynoa had a 5.68 ERA, a 1.39 WHIP and an 87:35 K:BB in 77 2/3 frames.
Mike Soroka Tosses Four Scoreless Innings In Rehab Start
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Mike Soroka (Achilles) threw four scoreless innings for Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday night in his minor league rehab start, allowing just one hit while striking out five and walking none. Soroka is trying to return to the Braves starting rotation after tearing his right Achilles twice. The 25-year-old is a must-roster player in all fantasy leagues when healthy, but the problem is there isn't much time left in the regular season for him to make an impact for fantasy managers in 2022. Soroka hasn't pitched in a big-league game since the shortened 2020 campaign, but he was an All-Star in 2019 when he had a 2.68 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 142 strikeouts and 41 walks in 174 2/3 innings over 29 starts. There's a chance the Braves use him in relief initially when he's ready to return to the major league roster.
Ozzie Albies Has Two Hits In Rehab Game
Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies (foot) went 2-for-3 with an RBI in his minor league rehab game with Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday night. Albies went 0-for-4 to start his rehab assignment the day before, but he bounced back on Friday while serving as the designated hitter out of the leadoff spot. The 25-year-old has been out of action in the big leagues since June 13, so he certainly won't be rushed back to the Braves lineup until they feels he's fully ready. Until Albies returns to Atlanta, Vaughn Grissom should continue to see regular starts at the keystone. Before his injury, Albies was hitting .244/.289/.405 with eight home runs, 33 RBI, 34 runs scored and three stolen bases in 242 at-bats. He won't have much time to contribute for fantasy managers once he's back.
Jake Odorizzi Scratched From Saturday's Start
The Atlanta Braves have scratched right-hander Jake Odorizzi (arm) from his scheduled start on Saturday against the Miami Marlins with arm fatigue. Bryce Elder will toe the rubber in his place. Instead, Odorizzi will start next against the Mariners in Seattle. It's not a serious situation for the 32-year-old, but the Braves don't want to take any chances. In his five starts since being acquired from the Houston Astros, Odorizzi has gone 1-2 with a 4.26 ERA (5.65 FIP), 1.46 WHIP, 19 strikeouts and seven walks in 25 1/3 innings pitched. In 17 starts on the season as a whole, he's gone 5-5 with a 3.90 ERA (4.23 FIP), a 1.24 WHIP and a 65:24 K:BB in 85 1/3 innings. Elder, a rookie, is 1-3 with a 4.45 ERA (4.82 FIP), a 1.52 WHIP and 24 strikeouts in 28 1/3 innings over six outings (five starts) for Atlanta.
Ronald Acuna Jr. Returns To The Starting Lineup
Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. (knee) is back in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies and right-hander Ryan Feltner, serving as the designated hitter and batting in his customary leadoff spot. Acuna will return to action after missing the last three games with right knee pain. Fantasy managers will want to get him back into their starting lineups in all formats. The 24-year-old superstar will look to stretch his modest hitting streak to six games. Acuna is hitting a strong .319 (29-for-91) with two home runs, 12 RBI, 17 runs scored and three stolen bases in 24 games in the month of August.
Ozzie Albies To Start Rehab Assignment Thursday
Atlanta Braves skipper Brian Snitker said that second baseman Ozzie Albies (foot) will start a minor league rehab assignment on Thursday with Triple-A Gwinnett. Albies has been on the shelf since mid-June, but he's nearing a return to Atlanta's everyday lineup for the stretch run in September. The two-time All-Star should remain stashed in all fantasy baseball leagues. Before his injury, he was hitting .244/.289/.405 with eight home runs, 33 RBI, 34 runs scored and three stolen bases in 263 plate appearances over 62 games played. Because he's been out for an extended period of time, fantasy managers should expect the 25-year-old's rehab assignment to be a rather lengthy one.
Ronald Acuna Jr. Isn't Starting Tuesday
Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. (knee) isn't in the team's lineup on Tuesday for a matchup with the Colorado Rockies and right-handed starter Jose Urena. The 24-year-old is hitting .274 with a .367 on-base percentage, 10 home runs, and 25 stolen bases in 411 plate appearances this season. Instead, Robbie Grossman will start in right field and bat ninth against the Rockies. The veteran is hitting .226 with a .304 on-base percentage, two home runs, and a stolen base in 69 plate appearances since joining Atlanta via a trade with the Detroit Tigers. He could be worth a look as a streaming option on Tuesday for fantasy managers in deeper leagues.
Ozzie Albies To Begin Rehab Assignment Soon
Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies (foot) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment this week. The 25-year-old has been sidelined since June due to a broken foot. He has been progressing nicely and it sounds like he is only days away from getting back into game action. The expectation is that he'll need a few games to get back into the groove of things. Albies should be back in the Braves lineup in early September. That means, Vaughn Grissom could see his playing time take a significant hit.
Orlando Arcia Starting Rehab Assignment
Atlanta Braves infielder Orlando Arcia (hamstring) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday. The 28-year-old second baseman has been out since early August with a left hamstring injury but he's on track to return to the Braves sometime in early September. Arcia was slashing .243/.321/.405 with seven home runs and 26 RBI across 173 at-bats before going down. He'll likely serve in a bench/utility role when he returns to majors.
Jackson Stephens Hit In Head Friday
Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Jackson Stephens (head) left the game on Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals when he was hit in the head by a line drive. It was a scary scene, but the good news is that Stephens was able to walk off the field under his own power after he was looked at by trainers. Before leaving, he was roughed up, allowing three runs on four hits while walking one and striking out none in just one-third of an inning. It remains to be seen if the 28-year-old right-hander is dealing with a concussion, but if he is, he'll likely land on the seven-day injured list. In 32 appearances for Atlanta this year, Stephens has a 3.89 ERA, a 1.39 WHIP and a 43:19 K:BB with two saves in 44 innings pitched.
Mike Soroka Set For Rehab Start Saturday
Atlanta Braves pitcher Mike Soroka (Achilles) will make his next rehab start Saturday with Triple-A Gwinnett. He threw 58 pitches in his previous rehab appearance with Triple-A Gwinnett. The 25-year-old hasn't pitched in the majors since 2020. He went 13-4 with a 2.68 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and a 142:41 K: BB in 174 2/3 innings over 29 starts in 2019. Soroka will make one more rehab start on Saturday and is on target to be activated from the injured list in early September. Fantasy managers should continue to stash the Braves right-hander in all league formats.
Eddie Rosario Returns To Lineup Monday
Atlanta Braves outfielder Eddie Rosario (hamstring) is serving as the designated hitter and is batting sixth on Monday against the Pittsburgh Pirates and right-hander Roansy Contreras. Rosario missed Sunday's series finale against the Houston Astros with a sore hamstring, but he'll return a day later. The 30-year-old should continue to start regularly against right-handed pitchers moving forward. Rosario has been a bit better of late, but overall he's hitting a rough .187/.239/.313 with four home runs, 18 RBI, 17 runs scored and three stolen bases in 180 plate appearances over 53 games for Atlanta in 2022. Rosario can be a streaky hitter, but he's yet to really go on a hot stretch at the plate this season.
Ehire Adrianza Comes Off Injured List
The Atlanta Braves reinstated infielder/outfielder Ehire Adrianza (illness) from the 10-day injured list on Monday and designated infielder Ryan Goins for assignment in a corresponding move. Adrianza will return to a super-utility role for the Braves off the bench, but since he won't see regular playing time, he's well off the fantasy radar in mixed leagues. The 33-year-old switch-hitter is batting just .180/.260/213 with no home runs, seven RBI, seven runs scored and one stolen base in 100 plate appearances and 34 games for the Braves and Washington Nationals this year. Adrianza has played in just three games for the Braves this year.
Max Fried Reinstated And Starting Thursday
The Atlanta Braves reinstated left-hander Max Fried (concussion) from the seven-day concussion injured list on Thursday and optioned right-hander Freddy Tarnok to Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move. Fried will make his return to the starting rotation on Thursday against the division-rival New York Mets. The 28-year-old southpaw will be making his first big-league start since Aug. 6, so he'll be a little more risky for fantasy managers than usual, especially in a tough matchup. Fried has been pretty solid against the Mets in 2022, though, posting a 3.18 ERA with 16 strikeouts and six walks in 17 innings over three starts. The first-time All-Star has gone 10-4 this year with a sharp 2.60 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 127 K's and 25 walks in 138 1/3 innings over his 22 starts.
Ozzie Albies To Resume Batting Practice Soon
Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies (foot) is expected to resume batting practice as early as next week. The 25-year-old is continuing to work his way back from a broken foot that has limited him to 62 games this season. Albies is aiming to travel with the team for their next road trip where he'll face live pitching. The organizations believes he could return in late August or early September. This is good news for fantasy managers who have been holding Albies through this injury. He could make a significant impact once he gets back on the field.
