| | Houston Texans wide receiver Chris Conley was released by the organization on Tuesday. He re-signed with the team in March, but apparently didn't show enough to warrant keeping on the roster. Now, the Texans only have four active wide receivers on their roster as they head into Week 1. Possibly, the team decides to bring back Conley after they make some other moves. Last season, Conley finished with 22 receptions, 323 receiving yards, and two touchdowns in 16 games (10 starts) with the Texans. He'll likely be scooped up pretty fast, assuming the Texans don't plan on bringing him back. There isn't much weekly fantasy value in Conley, but he's a nice depth option at wideout. |
| | Running back Marlon Mack, who was released by the Houston Texans on Tuesday, is planning to re-sign with the team's practice squad. Mack was one of the most surprising cuts of roster cutdown day on Tuesday, but he'll stick with Houston after all as veteran depth behind impressive rookie Dameon Pierce and Rex Burkhead. The 26-year-old had a serious Achilles injury while with the Indianapolis Colts two years ago, and he's just now getting back to full health. He won't be a fantasy option in 2022 unless injuries strike Pierce and Burkhead. With the expectation that Pierce will see heavy early down usage right out of the gates in his rookie season, he's rising up draft boards as an RB3/flex with upside. |
| | The Houston Texans claimed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Tyler Johnson off waivers on Wednesday. It didn't take Johnson long to find a team after Tampa waived him on roster cutdown day on Tuesday. The 24-year-old former fifth-round pick in 2020 caught 48 of 72 targets for 529 yards and two touchdowns in 31 games (six starts) in his two seasons in Tampa, including a 36-360-0 line in 17 games (three starts) in 2021. He'll have to learn a new offense in Houston, but there is some opportunity behind Brandin Cooks and Nico Collins. Johnson will be competing for playing time with Chris Moore and Phillip Dorsett. For now, fantasy managers can leave him to the waiver wire in all leagues. |
| | The Houston Texans cut running back Royce Freeman on Wednesday. It was veteran Marlon Mack, not Freeman, that was surprisingly cut on Tuesday, but the Texans re-signed Mack to the practice squad on Wednesday and released Freeman a day later. As things stand right now, rookie Dameon Pierce is set to lead Houston's backfield on early downs to open the season, with veteran Rex Burkhead likely to do most of his work on passing downs. Dare Ogunbowale will operate as the No. 3, with Mack lurking on the practice squad. Freeman, a third-round pick by the Denver Broncos in 2018, hasn't been nearly as good as he was after two solid seasons to open his career in 2018 and 2019. Last year, he finished with 56 carries for 169 yards and no touchdowns, adding 10 receptions for 77 yards in 15 games (no starts) for the Carolina Panthers and Texans. |
