Philadelphia Phillies Transactions

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Philadelphia Phillies and first baseman Rhys Hoskins avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $12 million deal on Friday, according to sources. In an even more formidable Phillies lineup heading into 2023 with the addition of superstar shortstop Trea Turner, Hoskins will be more attractive in fantasy in the heart of Philly's lineup. The 29-year-old finished up his sixth MLB season in 2022 by hitting .246/.332/.462 with a .794 OPS, 30 home runs, 79 RBI, 81 runs scored and two stolen bases in 672 plate appearances and 156 games. Hoskins has hit 27-plus home runs in four of his six seasons and should be money for fantasy managers again in 2023.
The Philadelphia Phillies and left-handed reliever Gregory Soto avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.925 million on Friday. The Phillies just acquired Soto in a trade with the Detroit Tigers a week ago after finishing up back-to-back All-Star seasons in Detroit. Last year, he went 2-11 but had a career-low 3.28 ERA (3.59 FIP), 1.38 WHIP, career-high 30 saves and 22.8 percent strikeout rate in 60 1/3 innings over a career-high 64 relief appearances. The 27-year-old southpaw has never had a BB/9 under 5.00 in his four major-league seasons, so without nearly as many save opportunities in what is expected to be a closer-by-committee situation in Philly, Soto loses considerable fantasy appeal with his move to the Phillies. Along with Soto, the team will also have Seranthony Dominguez, Craig Kimbrel and Jose Alvarado as options to save games.
The Philadelphia Phillies and left-handed starting pitcher Ranger Suarez avoided salary arbitration on Friday by agreeing to a one-year, $2.95 million deal. In a full-time starter role in the big leagues for the first time, Suarez handled himself rather well in 2022, going 10-7 with a 3.65 ERA (3.87 FIP), 1.33 WHIP and 19.5 percent strikeout rate in 155 1/3 frames over 29 starts. Even more exciting was the fact that the 27-year-old southpaw was much better in the second half of the year and in the playoffs to help the Phillies to a World Series appearance. Suarez doesn't strike out a ton of batters (career 7.9 K/9) and isn't overpowering anyone, so he'll need to continue to induce weak contact in order to thrive for fantasy managers in mixed leagues in a hitter-friendly ballpark.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired closer Gregory Soto and infielder Kody Clemens from the Detroit Tigers on Saturday in exchange for infielder Nick Maton, outfielder Matt Vierling and catcher Donny Sands. The 27-year-old Soto had a career-high 30 saves for the Tigers in 2022, but his fantasy stock is likely to fall with the move to Philadelphia and their closer-by-committee situation that also includes Craig Kimbrel, Seranthony Dominguez and Jose Alvarado. If the left-handed Soto can't limit his walks (12.9% BB rate last year), he could regress in 2023. Clemens, the son of Roger Clemens, made his major-league debut in 2022 and hit .145 with five homers, 17 RBI and 13 runs scored in 56 games. He'll give the Phillies flexibility on the infield as a bench bat.
Friday, January 06
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Philadelphia Phillies signed free-agent right-hander Jon Duplantier to a minor-league deal on Friday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training. Although seven of Duplantier's 19 major-league outings in two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks came as starts, he'll likely be competing for a spot in Philadelphia's Opening Day bullpen this spring. He did not make it to the big leagues in 2022 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he had a 4.80 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 109 strikeouts and 57 walks in 93 2/3 innings over 34 outings (14 starts) for Triple-A Oklahoma City. If he makes the Opening Day roster, he can be ignored in all fantasy leagues. The 28-year-old has given up 37 earned runs on 58 hits while walking 26 and striking out 46 in 49 2/3 big-league innings.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Philadelphia Phillies announced that the team has acquired right-hander Erich Uelmen on Wednesday in a tweet from the team's official Twitter account. Uelmen was acquired from the Chicago Cubs for cash considerations. The 26-year-old previously appeared in 25 games for the Cubs last season, logging 27 innings to go with a 4.67 ERA and a 5.00 FIP. He also turned in three holds and a save to go along with 21 strikeouts compared to 12 walks. Philadelphia's other current bullpen options include Jose Alvarado, Connor Brogdon, Seranthony Dominguez, Craig Kimbrel, Andrew Bellatti, James McArthur, Nick Nelson, Luis Ortiz, Sam Coonrod, Matt Strahm, Noah Song, Michael Plassmeyer, and Andrew Vasquez.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Right-hander Craig Kimbrel and the Philadelphia Phillies agreed to a one-year, $10 million deal this past Friday. The Phillies have been one of the more active teams this offseason and have slowly pieced together a World Series-caliber squad. Philadelphia's acquisition of Kimbrel is certainly a step in the right direction. The 34-year-old spent his 2022 season with the Dodgers and posted a 3.75 ERA across 63 appearances. He collected 22 saves, with a 27.7 K% and 72 punchouts. His prime years may be in the past, but Kimbrel has some fuel left in the tank. The right-hander will have the first shot at cracking the team's closer role, but other competitors such as Seranthony Dominguez and Jose Alvarado could also see save opportunities.
Friday, December 09
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Philadelphia Phillies officially signed free-agent left-hander Matt Strahm to a two-year deal on Friday, according to president of baseball operations David Dombrowski. Strahm will make $15 million on the two-year deal. The 31-year-old southpaw reliever will make an improving Phillies bullpen better in 2023. He posted a 3.83 ERA (3.72 FIP), a 1.23 WHIP, his first four career saves and 52 strikeouts in 44 2/3 relief innings over 50 appearances for the Boston Red Sox last season. Strahm could have some appeal in holds leagues as a setup man in Philadelphia, but he's unlikely to see many save chances, if any at all over the course of the season. Strahm has a career 3.81 ERA (4.03 FIP), a 1.21 WHIP and a 25.3 percent strikeout rate in seven big-league seasons.

According to a tweet from ESPN's Jeff Passan on Monday morning, the Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly "in agreement on a contract" with free-agent shortstop Trea Turner. Kiley McDaniel reported that the deal is for 11 years and $300 million and includes a full no-trade clause. The 29-year-old hit .298 last season in 708 plate appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers while also logging a .343 on-base percentage, 21 home runs and 27 stolen bases. One of fantasy baseball's elite options, both in general and at the shortstop position, Turner also turned in 100 or more runs and RBI with 101 runs scored and 100 RBI this past season.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Philadelphia Phillies claimed outfielder Jake Cave off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, according to president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. The Phillies' 40-man roster now stands at 38 players with the addition of Cave. Baltimore claimed Cave off waivers from the Minnesota Twins right after the end of the 2022 season, but he'll now be joining the Phillies for next year. The 29-year-old left-handed batter played in 54 games for the Twins in 2022, batting .213/.260/.384 with five home runs, 20 RBI, 17 runs scored and two stolen bases in 177 plate appearances. He'll serve as outfield depth with his new organization. Cave is a .235/.297/.411 hitter in five major-league seasons, all with the Twins.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday, and the procedure went "very well," according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Harper could be back hitting competitively in mid-May. The Phillies official Twitter account reports that the prognosis is for Harper to return as the designated hitter by the All-Star break in 2023, with a possible return to play right field towards the end of the regular season. The 30-year-old All-Star will miss the start of the regular season next year after playing through a UCL injury to his right arm for most of the 2022 campaign. He still hit well despite the injury, batting .286/.364/.514 with an .877 OPS, 18 homers, 65 RBI, 63 run scored and 11 stolen bases in 370 at-bats, so fantasy managers shouldn't expect much of a drop-off, if any, when he returns.
Wednesday, November 16
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper (elbow) will have UCL surgery on his right elbow next Wednesday. It's still unknown if it will be Tommy John surgery or not, so Harper's timetable for a return next year is still up in the air. Tommy John surgery would require a longer rehab, but it wouldn't mean that Harper would be lost for the entire 2023 season. Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani had TJ surgery on Oct. 1, 2018, and returned to serve as the designated hitter on May 7, 2019. The 30-year-old slugger was limited to DH duties all year after initially hurting his elbow in April, but it didn't slow him down at all at the plate. The seven-time All-Star remained a force with the lumber, slashing .286/.364/.514 with an .877 OPS, 18 home runs, 65 RBI, 63 runs scored and 11 stolen bases in 99 regular season games. Harper also missed valuable time with a fractured thumb.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said at the GM meetings this week that outfielder Bryce Harper (elbow) will have his torn right UCL evaluated on Monday. Harper being able to avoid surgery seems unlikely, and he could also end up needing Tommy John surgery, but we won't know until early next week. Last year's MVP suffered the injury in mid-April and had to serve as the designated hitter the rest of the season. If doctors recommend fully Tommy John surgery, Harper will most likely not be ready for the start of the 2023 season, which would significantly impact his fantasy value in drafts. The 30-year-old left-handed slugger was a beast in the postseason to help get the Phillies to the World Series, and he hit .286/.364/.514 with an .877 OPS, 18 home runs, 65 RBI, 63 runs scored and 11 stolen bases in his 370 regular season at-bats.
Tuesday, November 08
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Philadelphia Phillies declined the club option on second baseman Jean Segura on Monday, making him a free agent. The Phillies will pay Segura a $1 million buyout instead of retaining him for $17 million in 2023. The 32-year-old Dominican played in just 98 regular season games for the Phillies this year due to injury and hit .277/.336/.387 with 10 home runs, 33 RBI, 45 runs scored and 13 stolen bases in 387 plate appearances. In his first career postseason run, Segura went 12-for-56 (.214) with seven RBI, four runs scored, two walks and 14 strikeouts in 17 games. The two-time All-Star is more of a contact over power guy who doesn't run nearly as much as he did in his prime, making him a low-upside fantasy option as he approaches the tail end of his career.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
According to a tweet from The New York Post's Jon Heyman, the Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly picking up Aaron Nola's $18 million option. Heyman tweeted on Monday: "Phillies pick up Aaron Nola $18M option." The 29-year-old made 32 starts for the National League East franchise in the regular season, logging a 3.25 ERA and a 2.58 FIP in 205 innings of work. He also registered 235 strikeouts and 29 walks allowed in those 205 innings. Once the postseason started, the veteran pitched to a 4.91 ERA and a 3.74 FIP in five starts spanning 25.2 innings of work.
Philadelphia Phillies right-handed pitcher Zach Eflin has reportedly declined his $15 million option and will become a free agent, according to a tweet from The New York Post's Jon Heyman on Monday. The 28-year-old made 20 appearances for the Phillies, 13 of which were starts. He logged a 4.04 ERA and a 3.56 FIP in 75 2/3 innings while also turning in 65 strikeouts and allowing 15 walks. What's more, Eflin registered three wins and a save in his 20 appearances.
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper (elbow), who suffered a tear in the UCL in his right elbow in April, is expected to undergo evaluation this week to determine how much healing has occurred in his ligament since he first suffered the injury. The results of his evaluation will determine whether he needs surgery to complete the healing. If he needs surgery, it will impact his readiness for next season, but there are different surgical options, each with different timetables for recovery. Harper could have a procedure called an internal brace. Fully Tommy John surgery would require a longer recovery time, but it wouldn't eliminate the possibility of Harper playing early in 2023 since he's not a pitcher. Last year's National League MVP could still serve as the designated hitter, much like he did in 2022.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher David Robertson (calf) is on the team's roster for their National League Championship Series matchup with the San Diego Padres. The veteran enjoyed a strong regular season in 2022, pitching to a 2.40 ERA and a 3.58 FIP in 63.2 innings split between the Chicago Cubs and the Phillies. He added 81 strikeouts while allowing just 35 walks. He also picked up 20 saves. In his only appearance so far this postseason, Robertson struck out a pair of batters in a scoreless inning.
Monday, October 17
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher David Robertson (calf) will test his strained right calf with a throwing session on Monday. His status for the National League Championship Series against the San Diego Padres remains unclear, but if he comes out of the session without any setbacks, he could be added to the NLCS roster on Tuesday before Game 1 of the series. The 37-year-old right-handed veteran wasn't available in the NL Division Series against the Atlanta Braves due to a calf injury he injured while celebrating a Bryce Harper home run in the Wild-Card Series. Robertson was one of the team's best relievers during the regular season, so getting him back for the NLCS would be huge for the Phillies bullpen.
Saturday, October 15
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher David Robertson (calf) continues to throw and believes he is close to pitching again. Robertson would be a nice boost to the team's bullpen if they advance past the Atlanta Braves in the National League Division Series to play in the NL Championship Series next week. The 37-year-old veteran reliever strained his right calf celebrating a Bryce Harper home run in the Wild-Card Series and wasn't able to make the roster or the NLDS this week. Already with a pretty solid bullpen, Philadelphia would get a boost if Robertson is healthy enough to pitch next week. He had a 2.40 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 20 saves and 81 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings during the regular season.
Tuesday, October 11
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher David Robertson (calf) strained his calf jumping when outfielder Bryce Harper hit a home run in Game 2 of the National League Wild-Card Series on Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Robertson received a platelet-rich plasma injection and was left off the roster for the NL Division Series this week against the Atlanta Braves. It's a notable loss for the Phillies for this series, as Robertson was solid for the Phillies in a high-leverage role in the regular season, posting a 2.40 ERA (3.58 FIP), a 1.16 WHIP, 20 saves and 81 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings with the Phillies and Chicago Cubs. Zach Eflin will continue to serve as the team's primary closer against the Braves this week.
Friday, October 07
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies left-handed reliever Brad Hand (elbow) was activated from the 15-day injured list and is on the team's roster for the National League Wild-Card Series against the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend. Hand was put on the injured list on Sept. 22 with left elbow tendinitis, but he's recovered and will be available out of the bullpen for Game 1 of the series in St. Louis on Friday. The 32-year-old veteran southpaw pitched well for Philadelphia this year, posting a 2.80 ERA (3.94 FIP), a 1.33 WHIP, five saves, 13 holds and 38 strikeouts in 45 innings pitched. Brad probably won't see any save opportunities in the postseason, but he could be a very important option against lefties late in ballgames.
Thursday, October 06
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Edmundo Sosa (hamstring) is headed to meet the team at Busch Stadium in St. Louis for the team's National League Wild-Card Series this weekend against the Cardinals for a possible return from his hamstring injury. After being traded from the Cardinals to the Phillies this year, Sosa hit .315/.345/.593 with a .937 OPS, two home runs, 13 RBI, nine runs scored and three stolen bases in his 25 games with the Phillies. The 26-year-old's season was in jeopardy when he suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain in mid-September, but there's a chance he could serve as a bench player for the Phillies in St. Louis this weekend if he checks out fine. Sosa has mostly been a defense-first player, but he has impressed with his bat in his short time in Philly.
Tuesday, September 27
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Philadelphia Phillies reinstated outfielder Nick Castellanos (oblique) from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday and optioned catcher Donny Sands to Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move. Castellanos is starting in right field and is hitting sixth on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs and right-hander Marcus Stroman. The 30-year-old Castellanos missed almost a month with a right oblique strain and didn't go on a minor league rehab assignment, so it remains to be seen how effective he'll be at the plate for fantasy managers to close out what has been a very disappointing first year in Philly. He's returning to a .265/.305/.397 slash line with 13 home runs, 61 RBI, 53 runs scored and seven stolen bases in 499 at-bats. Castellanos made the All-Star team for the first time in 2021 and hit .309 with a career-high 34 home runs and 100 RBI.
Saturday, September 24
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos (oblique) will return to the team next week and forego a minor league rehab assignment, according to interim manager Rob Thompson. The 30-year-old outfielder, who has been out since early September, plans to do a full workout on Saturday and Sunday and hopes to rejoin the team for their series against the Chicago Cubs next weekend. If all goes according to plan, he would skip a minor league rehab assignment altogether. The team should provide an update on his status towards the end of this weekend. Castellanos is slashing .265/.305/.397 with 13 home runs, 61 RBI and seven stolen bases over 499 at-bats in what has been an underwhelming first season in Philadelphia.
Friday, September 23
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh (knee) is back in center field and is batting sixth on Friday against the Atlanta Braves and right-hander Jake Odorizzi. Marsh suffered a bruised left knee while attempting to make a catch at the wall on Tuesday, but he's back in the lineup to begin a weekend series against Atlanta. In 29 games with the Phillies since being acquired from the Los Angeles Angels, Marsh is hitting .281/.304/.438 with two home runs, 12 RBI, nine runs scored and a stolen base. He's been much better against right-handed pitching, too, going 73-for-286 (.255) with eight of his 10 home runs against them in 2022.
Thursday, September 22
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh (knee) is not in the starting lineup on Thursday against the Atlanta Braves. It shouldn't come as a big surprise after Marsh bruised his left knee attempting to make a catch at the wall on Wednesday. The Phillies are also facing tough left-hander Max Fried in Thursday's tilt, so it makes too much sense to rest Marsh for at least one more day. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. Matt Vierling will get the start in center field on Thursday and is hitting seventh against Fried. Vierling has been better against southpaws this year, batting .281 (32-for-114) with two of his five home runs against them in 125 plate appearances.
Wednesday, September 21
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh (knee) left Tuesday's game early against the Toronto Blue Jays with "left knee discomfort," and he'll be evaluated further. Marsh went 0-for-1 with a strikeout in the contest before being replaced by Dalton Guthrie in right field. Matt Vierling shifted from right field to center field. It's now the second time this year that Marsh has injured his knee while jumping into the outfield wall, with the first occurrence sending him to the injured list. For now, consider him day-to-day. If the 24-year-old is forced to the IL again, it could be the end of his year unless the Phillies make the playoffs. Marsh entered the game hitting .284 (25-for-88) with two homers, 12 RBI, nine runs scored and two steals in 28 games for the Phils after being acquired from the Angels at the trade deadline.
The Philadelphia Phillies activated right-handed starting pitcher Zack Wheeler (forearm) from the 15-day injured list on Wednesday. The 32-year-old has pitched to a 3.07 ERA and a 2.97 FIP in 138 innings for the National League East franchise this season. He's also logged 148 strikeouts and 33 walks in those 138 innings. Wheeler previously made his last start for the Phillies on August 20. Prior to landing on the injured list, the veteran had allowed three runs or fewer in 18 of his 23 starts this year. Philadelphia also optioned right-handed reliever Sam Coonrod to Triple-A.
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh (knee) is out of the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays due to a bruised left knee. Marsh injured his knee attempting to make a catch at the wall in Tuesday's game and is day-to-day for now. The good news is that he was able to test his knee by running and taking batting practice before the game on Wednesday. Matt Vierling will get the starting nod in center field on Wednesday and will hit ninth in the batting order against Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman. Vierling won't be very attractive for DFS lineups in the nine-hole for Philly, and he's also hitting just .227 (10-for-44) with no homers, four RBI, five runs scored and six strikeouts in 14 games this month.
Friday, September 16
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins (hand) is out of the starting lineup on Friday against the Atlanta Braves. Hoskins was hit on the hand by a pitch on Wednesday, although X-rays thankfully came back negative. He won't start the first game of the series against Atlanta, but there's a chance he'll start at some point this weekend. Hoskins is deserving of being returned to all starting fantasy lineups when he's back in Philly's lineup, as he's clubbed 28 homers and driven in 71 runs in 524 at-bats this year. Alec Bohm will shift to first base and hit second on Friday, while Yairo Munoz is starting at the hot corner and batting eighth against Braves left-hander Max Fried.
Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler (forearm) pitched two simulated innings on Friday, and is targeting a return to the rotation Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Good news for the righty, who has been out since August 20 with elbow soreness/forearm tendinitis. He was originally expected back two weeks ago, but after experiencing renewed soreness in his elbow he took a week off from throwing. He is feeling better now, though, and won't need a minor league rehab assignment before jumping back in the Phillies rotation. His first start will be an abbreviated one, but he can still be of use in daily lineup leagues next week.
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos (oblique) is backing off swinging after feeling stiffness in his oblique. Castellanos strained his oblique on September 2, and his progression hasn't gone as planned. He still has no date set for a possible return, and at this point it is fair to question if he will make any impact for fantasy managers the rest of the way. It has been a disaster of a season for the 2021 breakout star, and as soon as he was starting to come around he got injured. His .300/.333/.500 August slash line gives some sense of optimism for 2023 at least.
Thursday, September 15
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins (hand) was removed from Wednesday's game against the Miami Marlins after he was hit on the right hand by a pitch in the third inning of play. Hoskins has a bruise and is going for X-rays. Fantasy managers and the Phillies can ill-afford a serious injury to Hoskins at this juncture of the season, so they'll be crossing their fingers for his X-rays to come back negative. For now, consider the 29-year-old slugger to be day-to-day. Before leaving the contest, Hoskins was hitless in his only at-bat. Coming into Tuesday's game, Hoskins was slashing .250/.338/.470 with an .809 OPS, 28 home runs, 71 RBI, 75 runs scored and one stolen base in 523 at-bats for the Phils.
Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins (hand) exited Wednesday's game against the Miami Marlins early after being hit by a pitch on his right hand during the third inning. He will undergo x-rays after the game to determine the severity of his injury. The 29-year-old went 0-for-1 before exiting. He is considered day-to-day until the results of the x-rays return. Edmundo Sosa replaced Hoskins in the game, while Alec Bohm shifted from third base to first. Sosa would see an uptick in playing time if Hoskins misses any games. Stay tuned.
Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins (hand) had X-rays on his right hand come back negative after leaving Wednesday's win over the Miami Marlins. He is not expected to play in the series finale against Miami on Thursday. The 29-year-old exited Wednesday's game early after being hit by a pitch on his right hand during the third inning. He went 0-for-1 before leaving. Edmundo Sosa replaced Hoskins in the game, while Alec Bohm shifted from third base to first. Sosa is expected to be in Thursday's lineup with Hoskins sidelined.
Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins (hand) is not in the starting lineup on Thursday against the Miami Marlins. Hoskins was forced from Wednesday's game early after being hit by a pitch in the hand, but thankfully X-rays came back negative and he's just dealing with a contusion. There's a chance that the 29-year-old slugger could be right back in the lineup on Friday for the start of a big series against the Atlanta Braves. With Hoskins on the bench Thursday, Alec Bohm will move across the diamond to first base and hit fifth, while Edmundo Sosa is manning the hot corner and batting ninth in the order against Marlins right-hander Pablo Lopez.
Tuesday, September 13
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler (forearm) threw a successful bullpen session on Tuesday, and he's scheduled to throw another one or live batting practice on Friday in Atlanta. Barring setbacks, Wheeler could be back in the starting rotation for the Phillies as early as next Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Phillies could use Wheeler down the stretch as they look to hang onto one of the National League's three wild-card spots for the postseason. The 32-year-old could still help fantasy managers win a title the rest of the way in September if he can return next week, albeit in a tough matchup against Toronto. Wheeler has gone 11-7 in 2022 with a 3.07 ERA (2.98 FIP), a 1.08 WHIP and a 148:33 K:BB in 138 innings pitched over 23 starts.
Thursday, September 08
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Seranthony Dominguez (triceps) will start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday. He was cleared to face live hitters last week and will throw an inning in Thursday's rehab appearance. The 27-year-old will appear in a few rehab appearances before rejoining the team in mid-September. He has been sidelined with triceps tendinitis since August 17. Dominguez has been excellent for the Phillies in 2022, converting 9-of-10 saves with a 1.64 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and a 54:14 K: BB across 44 innings 2022. Fantasy managers should continue to stash the right-hander in all league formats.
Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Zach Eflin (knee) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Friday at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He'll start the game but treat it like a relief appearance. Eflin will return to the major league roster this month and pitch out of the bullpen, so he won't be stretched out on his rehab assignment. The 28-year-old won't be an option in fantasy the rest of the way as a relief option for the Phillies. Before his injury, Eflin went 3-5 with a 4.37 ERA (3.83 FIP), a 1.19 WHIP, 56 strikeouts and 15 walks in 68 innings over just 13 starts. He wasn't much of a fantasy option to begin with, outside of deeper leagues, and he can be ignored the rest of the way.
Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler (forearm) played catch from 90 feet on Thursday and will do so again from 120 feet on Friday. After that, he'll progress to a bullpen session, and he could return to the starting rotation without making a minor league rehab start. That's good news for fantasy managers, as time is running out in the 2022 regular season for Wheeler to make an impact. The 32-year-old right-hander was scratched from his scheduled start on Tuesday against the Miami Marlins, but he could return to the rotation early next week, barring a setback over the next couple of days. Before his injury, Wheeler had a 3.07 ERA (2.97 FIP), a 1.08 WHIP, 148 strikeouts and 33 walks in 138 innings over 23 starts for his fantasy managers.
Tuesday, September 06
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler (forearm) played a little catch on Tuesday. Wheeler was pulled from his originally scheduled start on Tuesday against the Miami Marlins with renewed soreness in his right forearm. If he doesn't have any setbacks after throwing on Tuesday, he could move to a bullpen session later this week. The 32-year-old will be hoping to return to the team's rotation sooner than later, but there's not much time left in the regular season this month for him to make a fantasy impact for those still playing for a championship. In 23 starts in 2022, the veteran right-hander has gone 11-7 with a 3.07 ERA (2.97 FIP), a 1.08 WHIP, 148 strikeouts and 33 walks in 138 innings.

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos (oblique) has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain. The 30-year-old outfielder suffered the injury on Friday against the Giants and should be out a few weeks. He had been in and out of the lineup over the last 10 days while dealing with turf toe so perhaps the time off will give him a chance to heal that ailment as well. Outfielder Dalton Guthrie had his contract selected from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and has been added to the active roster.

Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler (elbow) will take about a week off from throwing after he experienced renewed soreness in his right elbow. Wheeler went for an MRI which showed no structural damage, but the team will have him wait until next week before he begins throwing again. The veteran hurler was originally planning to return from the injured list to make a start against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday. Wheeler could still return before the end of the regular season but it may be too late to help fantasy gamers.

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos (toe) is back in the starting lineup Friday night against Alex Cobb and the San Francisco Giants, batting sixth and playing right field. Castellanos was diagnosed with turf toe earlier in the week and missed three games dealing with the ailment. The 30-year-old has disappointed fantasy managers who drafted him as a 4-category star coming into the year, but he quietly put together a nice August in which he slashed .300/.333/.500 while knocking five long balls in 100 at-bats. If he can continue that productivity in September he could help win a few championships. Get him back in your lineups.

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler (forearm) is expected to throw a bullpen session this weekend. If all goes well, he could be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday against the Miami Marlins. The 32-year-old had been sidelined since August 22 with tendinitis in his right forearm. He owns an 11-7 record with a 3.07 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and a 148:33 K: BB across 138 innings in 2022. Barring any setbacks with his bullpen session, Wheeler will return from the IL and won't be limited in his first start back on Tuesday. Stay tuned for further updates.

The Philadelphia Phillies acquired right-handed reliever Vinny Nittoli from the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, and they plan to add him to their major league roster when rosters expand on Thursday, according to sources. It's unclear what Toronto received in return. Nittoli planned to opt out of his minor league deal on Wednesday, but the Blue Jays decided to trade him first. The 31-year-old has posted a 3.30 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 59 strikeouts, two saves and 14 walks in 46 1/3 innings pitched in 32 outings (four starts) with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Triple-A Buffalo in the minors this year. He won't be much of a fantasy asset down the stretch, but he'll give the Phillies some extra bullpen depth as they look to earn a wild-card spot.
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos (toe) remains out of the starting lineup on Wednesday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Castellanos is dealing with a case of turf toe and will miss his second straight game. With a scheduled day off on Thursday, there's a chance that he'll be back in the lineup for the start of a series against the San Francisco Giants on Friday. Fantasy managers are hoping he can return soon, as he's gone 30-for-100 (.300) with five home runs, 12 RBI and 13 runs scored in 26 games in August. Matt Vierling will get another start in right field and hit seventh on Wednesday against Diamondbacks left-hander Tommy Henry. On the season, Vierling has a .232 average (56-for-241) with five long balls, 20 RBI, 32 runs scored and six stolen bases for the Phils.

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos (toe) is not in his team's lineup for a Monday road game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Castellanos is dealing with turf toe, which has been going on for the past 10 days. Interim manager Rob Thomson told reporters on Monday that Castellanos could miss a few days with the ailment, although he will be available to pinch hit. Castellanos is giving way to Matt Vierling in right field on Monday.
The Philadelphia Phillies signed free-agent right-handed reliever Chris Devenski to a minor league deal on Tuesday. Devenski will report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He was an All-Star in 2017 with the Houston Astros, but he has struggled to stick in the major leagues the last three years. In the last two years with the Arizona Diamondbacks it's been tough sledding for Devenski, as he's posted an 8.00 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, 14 strikeouts and three walks in just 18 relief innings, including one save. The 31-year-old veteran will strictly represent minor league relief depth for the Phillies to close out the 2022 season.
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos (toe) remains out of the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. It sounds like the right-handed slugger is still working through a case of turf toe. This shouldn't sideline him for long and it sounds like he is available off the bench on Tuesday. Fantasy managers might only be without Castellanos for one more game. Kyle Schwarber, Brandon Marsh, and Matt Vierling will patrol the outfield on Tuesday.

Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler (forearm) is planning to throw a pair of bullpen sessions beginning in the next three-to-five days. Wheeler has been on the injured list since August 22 with tendinitis in his right forearm. The veteran hurler told reporters on Friday that he has been dealing with tendinitis throughout the season, as well as in past seasons, but that the issue doesn't usually bother him while he's on the mound. Wheeler could be ready to return to the Philly rotation in the next few weeks, provided that he doesn't suffer any setbacks.
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh went 3-for-4 with three RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base in his minor league rehab game on Friday night for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, playing in center field and hitting leadoff. Marsh suffered a bone bruise in his left knee and a left ankle sprain earlier this month, but he looks fine now and could rejoin the Phillies as early as Saturday. The 24-year-old should return to an everyday role in center field in Philadelphia once he's reinstated from the injured list, giving him value in deeper mixed fantasy leagues. In 12 games for the Phillies, he's gone 8-for-32 (.250) with no homers, two RBI and two runs scored. In his 93 games for the Los Angeles Angels before being traded, Marsh was slashing .226/.284/.353 with eight long balls, 37 RBI, 34 runs scored and eight stolen bases.
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh (knee, ankle) has been activated from the 10-day injured list on Saturday. The 24-year-old outfielder has been out since August 18 after suffering knee and ankle injuries while attempting to rob a home run. He's slashing an underwhelming .250/.294/.313 with a pair of RBI and a stolen base in 12 games with the Phillies since coming over at the trade deadline from the Angels. He'll provide Philadelphia with a defensive boost in center field down the stretch. Bradley Zimmer was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper (elbow, thumb) will be activated from the 60-day injured list on Friday, according to interim manager Rob Thomson. Harper is taking the day off on Thursday but should be back in the team's starting lineup for the series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. In his two games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on his minor league rehab assignment, Harper went 5-for-8 with two home runs, two doubles, six RBI and three runs scored. The 29-year-old is expected to return as the team's primary designated hitter, and he should be returned to all starting fantasy lineups immediately. Harper will be returning to a strong .318/.385/.599 with a .985 OPS, 15 home runs, 48 RBI, 49 runs scored and nine stolen bases.
The Philadelphia Phillies placed right-hander Zack Wheeler (forearm) on the 15-day injured list with right forearm tendinitis on Thursday, with the move being retroactive to Aug. 22. It comes after he has given up 10 runs in 11 1/3 innings over his last two outings, so it's possible Wheeler had been pitching through some discomfort. The 32-year-old is still 11-7 with a 3.07 ERA (2.98 FIP), 1.08 WHIP, 148 strikeouts and 33 walks in 138 innings over 23 starts the for the Phillies and needs to be stashed in all fantasy leagues while he's on the shelf. Bailey Falter could be an option to replace Wheeler in the Phillies starting rotation in the near future.

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper (thumb) went 2-for-3 with two home runs, four RBI, an additional run scored, and two walks in Tuesday's rehab game at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He homered in his first at-bat in his first game back and later launched a three-run shot in the eighth inning for his second long ball of the game. The 29-year-old showed no signs of rust in his first game back after undergoing surgery on his left thumb in late June. Before landing on the injured list, Harper slashed .318/.385/.599 with 15 home runs, 48 RBI, 49 runs, and nine stolen bases over 275 plate appearances in 64 games. Barring any setbacks, Harper is on track to return to the Phillies lineup next week.

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman/designated hitter Darick Hall will be optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday in favor of an unannounced hitter, per the Athletic's Matt Gelb. The 27-year-old has slashed a solid .264/.296/.550 with nine home runs and 16 RBI in just 135 plate appearances this season, but almost all of those have come against right-handed pitchers. Consequently, Hall has not received every-day playing time. It sounds as though Hall will move to Triple-A to play every day and then could rejoin the team in early September when rosters expand.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper (elbow, thumb) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday night. Harper is scheduled to play through Saturday and then take Sunday off. It puts him on track to return next Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but it will obviously depend on how he feels after playing in minor league games this week. Fantasy managers are getting closer to having the 29-year-old back in their starting lineups next week. Last year's National League MVP had surgery to fix a fractured left thumb, and he's also still dealing with a UCL sprain in his right elbow, so he may remain the designated hitter for the rest of the season. Harper is a no-brainer must-start in fantasy leagues when he's healthy.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Philadelphia Phillies placed right-handed reliever Seranthony Dominguez (triceps) on the 15-day injured list on Sunday with triceps soreness. Dominguez was unavailable to pitch on Saturday after experiencing soreness earlier in the day, and he'll now be forced to miss at least the next 15 days. The 27-year-old is having a great year in the Phillies bullpen, going 6-4 with a 1.64 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, nine saves and 54 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched. He should be stashed in most fantasy formats while he's out. With Dominguez sidelined, David Robertson becomes more valuable in fantasy and should be the team's primary closer.
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper (elbow, thumb) is on track to begin a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Lehigh Valley either on Tuesday or Wednesday. He estimated that his thumb mobility is 85 to 90 percent back and the strength is there. Harper wants to get enough at-bats in the minors to be able to return to the majors without taking any days off. He was recently moved to the 60-day injured list, but that won't affect his timetable for a return, which could be as early as Sept. 1. The 29-year-old is likely to return as the team's full-time designated hitter, and he'll be a no-doubt must-start in fantasy when he's back. Harper was hitting .318/.385/.599 with a .985 OPS, 15 home runs, 48 RBI, 49 runs scored and nine stolen bases before fracturing his thumb.

The Philadelphia Phillies placed outfielder Brandon Marsh (ankle) on the 10-day injured list on Thursday with a left ankle sprain. In corresponding moves, the Phillies claimed outfielder Bradley Zimmer off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays and moved outfielder Bryce Harper (elbow, thumb) to the 60-day injured list. Marsh's injured list stint is retroactive to Aug. 17. The 24-year-old injured himself while leaping at the wall on Tuesday and will miss at least the next 10 days. He's gone 8-for-32 (.250) with no homers, two RBI and two runs scored in his first 12 games in Philly after being acquired from the Los Angeles Angels at the Aug. 2 trade deadline. Marsh isn't a must-stash in mixed fantasy leagues.
The Philadelphia Phillies moved outfielder Bryce Harper (elbow, thumb) to the 60-day injured list on Thursday to make room for outfielder Bradley Zimmer, who was claimed off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. Harper is recovering from a fractured left thumb after undergoing surgery in late June, but his timetable hasn't changed at all. He's also recovering from a torn ligament in his right elbow, but the 29-year-old is fully expected to make it back before the end of the regular season next month. There's a chance that Harper could begin a minor league rehab assignment at some point next week. Fantasy managers need to keep last year's National League MVP stashed in all fantasy baseball leagues.

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh (knee) underwent an MRI on his knee. The results showed no structural damage, helping determine his knee injury to be a bone bruise. However, he is also dealing with a sprained ankle. According to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, it's "very possible" a stint on the injured list is coming. Marsh injured his knee during Tuesday's game after attempting to rob home plate. The 24-year-old has appeared in 12 games with the Phillies since joining the team before the trade deadline. Over those 12 games, he's slashed .250/.294/.313 with two extra-base hits, both doubles.
