TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Boston Red Sox agreed with free-agent outfielder Greg Allen on a minor-league deal on Wednesday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training, according to a source. Allen didn't make his 2022 season debut until the second half of the season due to a hamstring, and he finished with a weak .186/.260/.271 slash line with only two home runs, eight RBI, 17 runs scored and eight stolen bases in 46 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 29-year-old switch-hitter will strictly provide Boston with outfield depth if he sticks around with the organization. Allen is a career .232/.299/.336 hitter with a .635 OPS and 10 home runs in six big-league seasons. His greatest asset is probably his speed, as he's swiped 45 bases in 282 games played.
The Boston Red Sox and left-hander Josh Taylor avoided salary arbitration Thursday by agreeing to a one-year, $1.025 million deal, according to a source. Ryan Brasier, Abraham Almonte, Nick Pivetta, Alex Verdugo, Rob Refsnyder, Christian Arroyo and Reese McGuire remain arbitration-eligible. The 29-year-old Taylor didn't pitch at all last season due to a back injury, but the Red Sox are hoping he'll return in 2023 and be as effective as he was in 2021, when he posted a 3.40 ERA (2.83 FIP), 1.43 WHIP, one save and 28.7 percent strikeout rate in 47 2/3 relief innings in his third major-league season with Boston. Taylor won't carry any fantasy relevance.

Boston Red Sox middle infielder Trevor Story (elbow) underwent an elbow procedure on Monday, per a tweet from the team's official Twitter account on Tuesday. Story underwent a successful internal bracing procedure of the right ulnar collateral ligament and is expected to miss time to begin the 2023 season. Dr. Keith Meister performed the surgery at Texas Metroplex Institute in Arlington, Texas. Story hit .238 in his first season with the Red Sox in 2022, logging a .303 on-base percentage, 16 home runs and 13 stolen bases in 396 plate appearances while seeing all of his playing time at second base. With Xander Bogaerts now in San Diego, Story is expected to serve as Boston's regular shortstop whenever he's cleared to play following his surgery.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Boston Red Sox and star third baseman Rafael Devers are in agreement on an 11-year, $331 million contract extension on Wednesday, according to sources familiar with the deal. The deal is not done, but the physical process has started. The New York Post's Jon Heyman reports the contract doesn't include a no-trade clause, and Devers will receive a $20 million signing bonus. Devers and the team just avoided salary arbitration on Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $17.5 million deal. The 26-year-old's extension breaks a Boston franchise record and also the MLB record for biggest contract for a third baseman. But he's proven to be one of the best hitters in baseball the last several seasons and slashed .295/.358/.521 with an .879 OPS, 27 home runs, 88 RBI, 84 runs scored and three steals in 141 games in 2022 with Boston. Devers will be a pricey fantasy commodity in the early rounds of 2023 drafts.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Miami Marlins have discussed a potential trade with the Boston Red Sox involving first baseman Triston Casas, per the Miami Herald's Craig Mish and Barry Jackson. Per Mish and Jackson, the Marlins are willing to move one starting pitcher this offseason in order to bolster their lineup. However, the Red Sox have so far rejected all offers. Casas is one of baseball's top prospects and boasts elite power potential. The 22-year-old slashed .273/.382/.481 with 11 home runs and 38 RBI in 317 plate appearances in 2022 with Triple-A Worcester and .197/.358/.408 with five HR and 12 RBI in 95 plate appearances with the Red Sox. The Marlins may need to include several hitters to complete a deal, and the Athletic's Chad Jennings has reported that the Red Sox have interest in second/third baseman Joey Wendle.
The Boston Red Sox have avoided arbitration with third baseman Rafael Devers, the team announced in a tweet on Tuesday. The American League East club tweeted the following: "The #RedSox today have agreed to terms with Rafael Devers on a one-year contract for the 2023 season, thus avoiding salary arbitration." One of fantasy baseball's best hitters and best third baseman, Devers enjoyed a strong 2022 season at the plate. The 25-year-old hit .295 last year with a .358 on-base percentage in 614 plate appearances. He also added 27 home runs and three stolen bases in the process. He's hit at least .279 with a minimum of 27 home runs in each of his last three full seasons.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Boston Red Sox and free-agent right-hander Corey Kluber agreed to a one-year deal with a team option for the 2024 season on Wednesday, according to sources familiar with the agreement. The New York Post's Jon Heyman reports that the deal is for $10 million, with an $11 million option for 2024. The three-time All-Star and two-time Cy Young winner spent the 2022 season pitching for the Tampa Bay Rays, going 10-10 with a 4.34 ERA (3.57 FIP), 1.21 WHIP and 20.2 percent strikeout rate in 31 starts covering 164 innings pitched. The 36-year-old was respectable for the Rays last year, but injuries will be a concern for fantasy managers, as well as his decrease in strikeout rate and velocity. And staying in the tough American League East in a hitter's park won't be easy as he nears the end of his career.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Infielder/outfielder Niko Goodrum and the Boston Red Sox have reportedly agreed to a minor-league contract, per a tweet from FanSided's Robert Murray on Wednesday morning. The veteran hit .116 with a .156 on-base percentage and a stolen base in 45 plate appearances for the Houston Astros last season. He logged a .311 average and a .500 on-base percentage to go along with a pair of home runs and stolen bases in 62 plate appearances for Houston's Triple-A affiliate during the 2022 campaign.
Monday, December 19
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Boston Red Sox and free-agent third baseman Justin Turner agreed to a two-year deal worth just under $22 million on Sunday, according to sources. The 38-year-old Turner is expected to spend most of his time at designated hitter or first base with Rafael Devers locked in at the hot corner. It's an end of an era for the Los Angeles Dodgers, as Turner had spent the last nine years in LA. Turner will help make up for the loss of J.D. Martinez, who ironically signed with the Dodgers on Saturday. Turner's power was way down in his final season with the Blue, as he posted just 13 home runs and a .438 slugging percentage in 128 games. He lands in a good environment at Fenway Park and in the hitter-friendly American League East, but fantasy managers should expect more diminished power along with a useful average and on-base percentage.
Friday, December 16
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Boston Red Sox acquired right-hander Wyatt Mills from the Kansas City Royals on Friday in exchange for minor-league right-hander Jacob Wallace. To make room for Mills on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox designated first baseman Eric Hosmer for assignment. In his second MLB season in 2022, Mills had a 4.60 ERA (3.62 FIP), a 1.33 WHIP and 26 strikeouts in 29 1/3 relief innings over 27 outings for the Seattle Mariners and Royals. If the 27-year-old makes it back to the big leagues in 2023 with Boston, he won't be on the fantasy radar out of the bullpen. Wallace posted a 3.81 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 76 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings at the Double-A level last season.
Wednesday, December 07
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Boston Red Sox and closer Kenley Jansen agreed to a two-year, $32 million deal on Wednesday, according to sources familiar with the deal. Jansen is no longer the closer that made three straight All-Star teams with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016-18, but he'll be a much-needed boost to a Red Sox bullpen that was pretty bad in 2022. The 35-year-old right-handed reliever was solid in his only season as the Atlanta Braves closer in 2022, going 5-2 with a 3.38 ERA (3.21 FIP), a league-high 41 saves (48 chances), a 1.05 WHIP and 85 strikeouts in 64 relief innings. Jansen finished a league-high 54 games and will move to Boston as their primary closing option to begin the 2023 campaign. He has 391 career saves and should add stability to the back end of Boston's 'pen.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Boston Red Sox signed former Chicago Cubs outfielder Narciso Crook to a minor-league deal this week, according to a source. The 27-year-old made his major-league debut in 2022 with the Cubs and appeared in four games while going 1-for-7 with five strikeouts. However, Crook hit well at Triple-A Iowa, batting .260 with 19 home runs, 67 RBI and an .836 OPS in 101 games. He will likely begin the 2023 season at Triple-A Worcester to provide outfield depth for the organization behind Alex Verdugo, Enrique Hernandez, Rob Refsnyder and Jarren Duran. Crook was originally drafted in the 23rd round by the Cincinnati Reds in 2013, and he spent seven years with the Reds before signing a minor-league deal with the Cubs last November.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Boston Red Sox acquired shortstop Hoy Park from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday in exchange for minor-league left-hander Inmer Lobo. The Pirates designated Park for assignment on Tuesday before dealing him to Boston. The 26-year-old South Korean infielder played in just 23 games for the Bucs in 2022, hitting .216 (11-for-51) with two home runs, six RBI, seven runs scored and a stolen base. Most of his time was spent at Triple-A Indianapolis, where he slashed .225/.332/.354 with 10 home runs, 37 RBI, 48 runs scored and 14 stolen bases in 375 plate appearances over 89 games played. Lobo, 18, played in the Dominican Summer League in 2022 and allowed only two runs while striking out 28 in 22 innings pitched.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Boston Red Sox have signed left-handed reliever Joely Rodriguez, the team announced in a tweet on Wednesday morning. Per the Red Sox's tweet, Rodriguez is signing a one-year deal that comes with a club option for the 2024 campaign. The veteran spent the 2022 season with the New York Mets, logging a 4.47 ERA and a 3.23 FIP in 50.1 innings of work. He also added 57 strikeouts and nine holds in those 50.1 innings while allowing 26 walks. The former Met will give Boston another late-inning option alongside the likes of Tanner Houck, John Schreiber, Garrett Whitlock, Ryan Brasier, and Matt Barnes.
The Pittsburgh Pirates designated infielder Hoy Park for assignment Tuesday. The National League Central club designated Park for assignment to create space on the 40-man roster for first baseman Lewin Diaz, who was claimed off waivers. Park hit .216 with a .276 on-base percentage, a pair of home runs, and a stolen base in 60 plate appearances for the Pirates last season. He saw playing time at second base, third base, and shortstop as well as in right field.
Thursday, November 17
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Boston Red Sox avoided salary arbitration with outfielder Rob Refsnyder by agreeing to a one-year, $1.2 million deal. Refsnyder ended his 2022 season on the injured list due to back spasms, but he should be healthy in plenty of time for spring training next year. The 31-year-old veteran will return to Beantown next year after hitting a strong .307/.384/.497 with an .881 OPS, six home runs, 21 RBI, 25 runs scored and one stolen base in just 153 at-bats as a bench player for the BoSox. Refsnyder will the 2023 campaign battling for occasional starts in Boston's outfield yet again, depending on what additions the club makes in the offseason.
Wednesday, November 09
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher James Paxton has exercised his player option for next season and will return to the team. The veteran didn't pitch in the Majors in 2022 due to injury and has made just six combined starts since the start of the 2020 season, but has been plenty effective when healthy. In his last full season in 2019, Paxton won 15 games in 29 starts for the New York Yankees while logging a 3.82 ERA and a 3.86 FIP, 186 strikeouts, and 55 walks in 150.2 innings. He'll give the Red Sox another rotation option alongside the likes of Chris Sale, Brayan Bello, Nick Pivetta, and Kutter Crawford.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Boston Red Sox declined their two-year, $26 million team option on starting pitcher James Paxton Monday, per the Athletic's Chad Jennings. The 34-year-old lefty spent the 2021 season recovering from Tommy John surgery and has only made a combined six starts since 2019 due to a host of injuries. However, Paxton does have an outstanding one-year, $4 million player option with the team. Paxton owns a solid career 3.59 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 26.5% strikeout rate in 137 starts, but injuries have prevented him from bringing that value to a team over the past several years.
New York Post's Jon Heyman reported Monday that Boston Red Sox first baseman Eric Hosmer will not be opting out of the remaining three years of his eight-year, $144 million contract. Hosmer is owed $39 million over the final three years of his current contract, most of which will be paid by his former team, the San Diego Padres. The 33-year-old was traded during this past season and put together his second consecutive disappointing campaign, slashing .268/.334/.382 with eight home runs and 44 RBI in 419 plate appearances. As such, it is not surprising that he will continue with his current contract. Hosmer's decreased power production has limited his fantasy value and will continue to do so if he cannot turn things around.
The Boston Red Sox declined outfielder Tommy Pham's one-year, $12 million team option Monday, per the Athletic's Chad Jennings. The veteran was traded from the San Diego Padres during the 2022 season and ended up with a .236/.312/.374 slash line, 17 home runs, 63 RBI, and eight stolen bases in 622 total plate appearances. Pham has shown an intriguing combination of power and speed at times throughout his career, but he has not been able to combine those skills with a decent batting average for the past several seasons. He will be a free agent heading into the off-season.
Tuesday, November 01
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale has informed the team that he won't opt out of the final two years of his five-year, $145 million deal, as expected. Both Sale and the Red Sox will now be hoping that he can remain healthy, something he hasn't been able to do for the first three years of his contract. The 33-year-old southpaw has thrown just 48 1/3 innings (11 starts) for Boston in the last three years due to injury. Tommy John surgery kept him off the mound for all of the shortened 2020 season and most of last year, and he only made two appearances in 2022 before requiring season-ending wrist surgery. Sale is expected to be recovered in time for spring training next year, but he'll be an extreme risk/reward pick for fantasy managers given his injury history.
Monday, October 31
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Relief pitcher Tyler Danish was outrighted by the Boston Red Sox on Monday, the team announced in a tweet. Additionally, per the Red Sox's tweet, Danish elected to become a free agent. The 28-year-old previously made 32 appearances for the American League East club during the 2022 season, logging 40.1 innings and pitching to a 5.13 ERA and a 4.97 FIP while striking out 32 batters. He also surrendered 12 walks in those 40.1 innings. Heading into the offseason, Boston's bullpen options include the likes of John Schrieber, Matt Barnes, Garrett Whitlock, Ryan Brasier, Tanner Houck, and Kutter Crawford.
Wednesday, October 12
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Boston Red Sox claimed catcher Caleb Hamilton off waivers from the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday. The 27-year-old made his Major League debut for the Twins this past season, logging 23 plate appearances and hitting .056 with a .222 on-base percentage and a home run. He'll give the Red Sox some additional depth behind the plate. In addition to Hamilton, Boston's other catching options on the 40-man roster include Ronaldo Hernandez, Connor Wong, and Reese McGuire.
Tuesday, October 04
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts (back) is back at shortstop and is hitting third against the Tampa Bay Rays and left-hander Jeffrey Springs on Tuesday. Bogaerts should be fine to play the final two games of the regular season for the BoSox. The 30-year-old is expected to opt out of his contract with the team this offseason, so Tuesday and Wednesday will likely be his final two games in Beantown. Bogaerts has made the All-Star team each of the last two years (four selections overall) and is currently hitting a strong .305/.376/.450 with an .826 OPS, 14 home runs, 69 RBI, 83 runs scored and eight stolen bases in 625 plate appearances over 148 games this year. He'll be one of the most coveted players in free agency if he reaches the open market this winter.
Monday, October 03
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Boston Red Sox reinstated first baseman Eric Hosmer (back) from the 10-day injured list on Monday and recalled left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez from the minors. In corresponding moves, the team optioned right-hander Josh Winckowski and placed outfielder Rob Refsnyder (back) on the 10-day injured list with lower-back spasms. Hosmer will return after missing 38 games, but he won't be in the starting lineup on Monday against the Tampa Bay Rays and right-hander Tyler Glasnow. Rookie Triston Casas has been swinging it well and will get another start at the cold corner on Monday, but Hosmer should see action in at least one of the two remaining regular season games for Boston.
Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts (back) is out of the starting lineup on Monday against the Tampa Bay Rays due to back tightness. It's the second straight game that Bogaerts will begin on the bench, but he should be considered day-to-day for the final two games of the regular season on Tuesday and Wednesday. If the 30-year-old isn't clear to play for the rest of the week, he'll finish with a .305/.376/.450 slash line with an .826 OPS, 14 home runs, 69 RBI, 83 runs scored and eight stolen bases in 551 at-bats in what is expected to be his final season in Boston. Enrique Hernandez is at the 6 on Monday and is hitting seventh against Rays right-hander Tyler Glasnow. In 24 games in September, Hernandez went 20-for-82 (.244) with no homers, 10 RBI and 16 runs scored.
Sunday, October 02
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox first baseman Eric Hosmer (back) is expected to be activated off the injured list on Monday, according to manager Alex Cora. The left-handed slugger has been out since August 20 due to inflammation in his back. Luckily, it sounds like Hosmer will be ready in time to play during the final series of the regular season. The 32-year-old is hitting .267/.333/.381 with eight homers and 44 RBI through 102 games this season.
Saturday, October 01
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has been optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Saturday. Boston called him on Friday but his stay with the big league club was brief. The Red Sox added Kaleb Ort and Josh Winckowski to their active roster in a pair of corresponding moves. Duran struggled whenever he was up with the Red Sox this year but he'll have a chance to compete for a roster spot next spring. He's still just 26 years old and possesses a lot of ability
Thursday, September 29
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story (heel, illness) is now sick and is very unlikely to return again this season. Time is running out for Story to return to the Red Sox's lineup, so fantasy managers shouldn't expect him to contribute within the next week. If it's indeed the case, the 29-year-old slugger will finish his first season with the Red Sox with a .238/.303/.434 slash line, 16 home runs, 66 RBI, 53 runs scored and 13 stolen bases in 396 plate appearances over 94 games played. There's a good chance he'll move to shortstop next year with Xander Bogaerts fully expected to opt out of his contract this winter. Christian Arroyo and Enrique Hernandez will continue splitting time at the keystone the rest of the way with Story unlikely to return.
Tuesday, September 27
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (shoulder) is now scheduled to come off the injured list and start Thursday's series finale against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park. The goal is for Eovaldi to throw five innings or 75 pitches in his return to the rotation. He will likely make one more start after that, finishing the 2022 season in Game 161 on Oct. 4 against the Tampa Bay Rays. Eovaldi will be a free agent this winter and has made just 18 starts this year due to injuries, going 5-3 with a 4.15 ERA. He initially landed on the injured list on Aug. 22 with right shoulder inflammation and lasted pitched for Boston on Aug. 12. Eovaldi will be extra risky as a fantasy streamer in his first start back against a decent Orioles offense.
Boston Red Sox infielder/outfielder Christian Arroyo (illness) has been away from the team for most of the week due to an illness, but he was finally able to work out at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night, and skipper Alex Cora thinks that Arroyo could be back in the lineup by Tuesday night against the Baltimore Orioles. He hasn't played since Sept. 18, but he's been one of Boston's hottest hitters since his return from the injured list on July 30, hitting .329 with 10 doubles and an .815 OPS. On the season in his 256 at-bats, the 27-year-old has been a strong utility player for the BoSox, hitting .281/.321/.414 with six home runs, 31 RBI, 30 runs scored and five stolen bases.
Boston Red Sox first baseman Eric Hosmer (back) is now on track to play some games down the stretch, possibly as soon as later this week. Top prospect Triston Casas has been getting most of the playing time at first base, but Hosmer could get some games in the field and also some at designated hitter when he returns from the injured list. Hosmer has played in just 12 games since being acquired from the San Diego Padres at the Aug. 2 trade deadline. "Moving better," said manager Alex Cora. "There's a chance we might get him toward the end of the week. There's a good chance. He's improved and is making strides. That's good." Hosmer has gone just 9-for-40 (.225) with no homers and four RBI in his 12 games for Boston before going on the IL.
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora and second baseman Trevor Story (heel) are both in agreement that his move to the injured list isn't a shutdown and that the hope is that Story can play again this season. "He's out there taking grounders. The running progression is the hard part. The moving around and the swinging the bat has been OK, but when he gets to that 70-75 percent, that's when he feels it. We're still working and hopefully he can play a few games." Story hasn't played since Sept. 10. He's eligible to return from the injured list on Sept. 29, at which point there will be seven games left in the regular season. Fantasy managers shouldn't be counting on Story to make it back this year.
Saturday, September 24
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (shoulder) allowed three earned runs on three hits (one home run) while walking two and striking out four in his minor league rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Friday night in three innings pitched. It was his first rehab start after he had tossed a 65-pitch simulated game earlier in the week. Barring any setbacks in his recovery, Eovaldi should be able to rejoin the Red Sox's rotation before the end of the regular season, but there won't be much time for him to make much of a fantasy impact. It's unknown where his next start will be, but he'll be a risky fantasy play if it's in the majors since he hasn't thrown for Boston since Aug. 12. The 32-year-old right-hander is 5-3 on the year with a 4.15 ERA (4.49 FIP), a 1.26 WHIP, 96 K's and 18 walks in 99 2/3 frames and 18 starts.
Friday, September 23
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (shoulder) is scheduled for a rehab start at Triple-A Worcester on Friday. He is set to throw four or five innings, and if all goes well he should return to the Red Sox rotation late next week and make two starts before the season ends. He has had his ups and downs this season, but was solid in his three August start before he was put on the IL, pitching to a 2.95 ERA and 1.30 WHIP while recording 16 strikeouts in 18 IP. Considering he hasn't pitched in the majors in over a month, he will be an extremely risky option heading into the final week of the season.
Thursday, September 22
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Boston Red Sox placed second baseman Trevor Story (heel) on the 10-day injured list on Thursday with a left heel contusion. The move is retroactive to Sept. 19. The Red Sox were hoping that Story could return at some point this week after getting injured on Sept. 11, but that hasn't happened. With very little time remaining in the 2022 regular season, it's very possible we won't see the 29-year-old slugger again this year. Story will be eligible to return on Sept. 29. First baseman Bobby Dalbec was recalled from Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move. He was demoted to the minors after hitting .211/.282/.362 with 11 homers, 36 RBI and 113 K's in 340 plate appearances earlier this year. Christian Arroyo and Enrique Hernandez should continue splitting playing time at the keystone with Story sidelined.
Wednesday, September 21
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story (heel) remains out of the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds. It will be the seventh straight game that Story has missed. He was able to do some running on Sunday, but he has yet to play in over a week to due a heel injury. If the 29-year-old is unable to return to Boston's lineup soon, he could end his first year in Beantown on the injured list. With Story out yet again, Enrique Hernandez will get another start at the keystone and bat ninth against Reds right-hander Chase Anderson. Although Hernandez has gone 13-for-48 (.271) with six RBI and 11 runs scored in his 15 games this month, he'll be a low-upside DFS play in the nine-hole on Wednesday.
Tuesday, September 20
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story (heel) remains out of the starting lineup on Tuesday against the Cincinnati Reds. Story hasn't played since Sept. 11 due to a sore heel, but he did do some running on Sunday, so hopefully he'll be back in the lineup at some point this week. In his first year with the Red Sox, he's hitting .238/.303/.434 with 16 home runs, 66 RBI, 53 runs scored and 13 stolen bases in 357 at-bats. Enrique Hernandez will get the nod at the keystone on Tuesday and will hit seventh against Reds rookie left-hander Nick Lodolo. Hernandez has some DFS sleeper appeal in the seven-hole against the lefty, as he's hitting .257 (19-for-74) against southpaws this year and has four of his six home runs against them.
Boston Red Sox right-hander Garrett Whitlock (hip) will undergo hip surgery next week and will be shut down for the rest of the 2022 season. The Red Sox are hoping that he'll be ready to go again for spring training next year. There's a good chance that the 26-year-old was pitching through pain for much of the season. Whitlock had allowed seven runs on 10 hits while walking two and striking out 10 in seven innings in his last five appearances, so something clearly wasn't right. He'll finish his second season in the big leagues with a 4-2 record, 3.45 ERA (3.29 FIP), 1.02 WHIP, six saves and 82 strikeouts in 78 1/3 innings covering 31 appearances (nine starts). Whitlock was much more effective as a reliever for Boston.
Monday, September 19
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (shoulder) threw 65 pitches in a four-inning simulated game at Fenway Park on Sunday morning. If he comes out of that session with no complications or setbacks, he will likely make a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Friday. It could put him in line to make a start for the Red Sox during their next homestand against the Baltimore Orioles and then a final 2022 outing in the last series of the season against the Tampa Bay Rays. Eovaldi has made just 18 starts this year due to injuries, and he's gone 5-3 with a 4.15 ERA (4.49 FIP), a 1.26 WHIP, 96 strikeouts and just 18 walks in 99 2/3 innings pitched. He hasn't pitched in a big-league game since Aug. 12, so he'll be much riskier in his first start back for fantasy managers still playing for a championship.
Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story (heel) took a big step forward on Sunday by taking at-bats against right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (shoulder) in a simulated game at Fenway Park. Story hasn't played since being removed from the game last Sunday against the Baltimore Orioles with a left heel injury. He could return for the start of a two-game series against the Cincinnati Reds this week. "With Trevor it's all about running right now, how much he can tolerate," manager Alex Cora said. The 29-year-old still has some time to help fantasy managers competing for a championship if he can return this week. In his first season with Boston, Story is slashing .238/.303/.434 with 16 home runs, 66 RBI, 53 runs scored and 13 stolen bases in 357 at-bats.
Boston Red Sox first baseman Eric Hosmer (back) hasn't given up hope of playing again this season. Skipper Alex Cora said Hosmer might resume baseball activities on Tuesday. It will be a matter of how Hosmer responds to increased activities and if there is enough time for him to ramp back up by the end of the 2022 season. The 32-year-old left-handed hitter hasn't played since Aug. 20 due to lower back inflammation. In his 12 games with the Red Sox since being acquired from the San Diego Padres at the Aug. 2 trade deadline, Hosmer has hit just .225/.311/.300 with no home runs, four RBI and six runs scored in 45 plate appearances. The Red Sox have been using a platoon of Christian Arroyo and Triston Casas at first base recently.

Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story (heel) is not in the lineup on Saturday vs. the Kansas City Royals. The 29-year-old infielder is going to miss his fourth straight game due to a left heel injury. Story has a chance to return to the lineup on Sunday but there's no guarantee there. He should be considered day-to-day as Christian Arroyo takes over at second base in his place.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story (heel) remains out of the starting lineup on Friday against the Kansas City Royals. Story will miss his third straight game, but the Red Sox believe he's close to returning, so there's a good chance he'll be back in there on Saturday. He remains day-to-day for fantasy managers. Christian Arroyo is getting another start at the keystone on Friday and is hitting seventh against Royals right-hander Jonathan Heasley. Arroyo has gone hitless in his last three games and is batting .226 (7-for-31) with a homer, eight RBI, two runs scored and seven strikeouts in nine games so far in September. Overall, he's slashing .278/.321/.416 with six homers, 30 RBI, 29 runs and five stolen bases in 245 at-bats for Boston.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story (heel) could return to the starting lineup either Wednesday or Friday after he left Sunday's game against the Baltimore Orioles early with left heel pain. "I don't think this is something that's going to take longer than a few days," said manager Alex Cora. "We'll push for tomorrow. If it doesn't happen, we'll be ready for Friday." If Story doesn't return for the final game of a two-game set against the division-rival New York Yankees on Wednesday, he's likely to be back on Friday for the series opener against the Kansas City Royals. Story has been swinging the bat well this month, going 10-for-35 (.286) with a homer, eight RBI, two runs scored and a steal in nine games played.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (shoulder) threw three innings of live batting practice at Fenway Park on Tuesday, which likely puts him in line to make a minor league rehab start next, perhaps as soon as this weekend. "Everything feels good. I feel ready to go," Eovaldi said. "This time, we're just trying to make sure we don't skip these steps and we dot our I's and cross our T's." The 32-year-old hard-throwing right-hander is nearing a return to Boston's starting rotation, but he's quickly running out of time to make a difference for his fantasy managers down the stretch. In 18 starts for the BoSox this year, Eovaldi is 5-3 with a 4.15 ERA (4.50 FIP), a 1.26 WHIP and a 96:18 K:BB in 99 2/3 innings thrown.
Boston Red Sox right-hander Tanner Houck (back) underwent surgery to fix a disc issue in his lower back on Sept. 6 and won't return this season. He was moved to the 60-day injured list on Sept. 4. Houck is expected to make a full recovery in time for spring training next year, and he's already feeling better. "Oh, I definitely can feel the difference," Houck said. "Before, my leg was on fire. I described it as fire ants were running up and down my leg. I have no more side effects, no more anything. I feel completely back to normal. I already told [manager Alex Cora] I'd pitch tonight if they let me, but I don't think that'll happen." Before his injury, the 26-year-old was having a fine season, converting eight of his nine save chances while posting a 3.15 ERA in 32 outings.
Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story (heel) remains out of the starting lineup on Wednesday against the division-rival New York Yankees. Story hasn't played since leaving the game early on Sunday due to left heel pain, but the team thinks there's a good chance he'll return on Friday after an off day on Thursday. In his first year in Beantown, the 29-year-old is hitting .238/.303/.434 with 16 home runs, 66 RBI, 53 runs scored and 13 stolen bases in 357 at-bats. Enrique Hernandez is getting the start at the keystone and is batting eighth on Wednesday against Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes. Hernandez hasn't done much for fantasy managers in 2022, but he has been better against lefties this year, with four of his six long balls coming against them.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (shoulder) is on track to throw another live batting practice session on Sunday, and he could still make a minor league rehab outing before he returns to Boston's rotation. The team isn't rushing him back. Eovaldi tossed a three-inning live batting practice session on Tuesday and continues to make progress from a strained shoulder. The 32-year-old right-hander has had multiple stints on the injured list in 2022 and has made just 18 starts, posting a 4.15 ERA (4.50 FIP), a 1.26 WHIP, 96 strikeouts and 18 walks in 99 2/3 innings. Eovaldi has been useful in mixed leagues, but he may only have time to make one or two starts by the time he's activated from the injured list.
Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story (heel) is likely to return to the starting lineup on Friday for the first game of a series against the Kansas City Royals. Story is missing another game on Wednesday against the division-rival New York Yankees, but he resumed baseball activities. The 29-year-old has now missed two games since leaving Sunday's contest with left heel pain, but he's merely day-to-day. Enrique Hernandez is getting the start at the keystone on Wednesday against Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes. On the year, Story is hitting a disappointing .238 with a .303 on-base percentage, but he's also chipped in 16 home runs, 66 RBI, 53 runs scored and 13 stolen bases in 357 at-bats.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story (heel) is not in the starting lineup on Tuesday against the New York Yankees. Story will start on the bench for the start of a two-game series against the division rivals after leaving Sunday's game early with left heel pain. For now, fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day and remove him from your starting lineups. The 29-year-old slugger has dealt with various injuries in 2022 in his first year in Beantown and is hitting just .238/.303/.434, but he does have 16 home runs, 66 RBI, 53 runs scored and 13 stolen bases in 357 at-bats. Christian Arroyo is manning the keystone and hitting sixth on Tuesday against Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole. Arroyo doesn't rack up the counting stats as a super-utility guy, but he's been consistent with the bat this year and is hitting .280 (7-for-25) with a homer, eight RBI and two runs in seven games over the last two weeks.

The Boston Red Sox claimed infielder Yu Chang off waivers on Monday. The 27-year-old was previously with the Tampa Bay Rays and has played for two other teams this season, hitting .216 with a .280 on-base percentage and four home runs in 164 total plate appearances. With experience at all four infield positions, he'll give the Red Sox some additional infield depth after the likes of Triston Casas, Trevor Story, Xander Bogaerts, and Rafael Devers. Boston also designated outfielder Jaylin Davis for assignment.

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story (heel) was removed during Sunday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. It seems that Story suffered a heel injury while running to first base. The severity of the injury is unknown, but he was likely removed from the game as a precaution. He's expected to undergo further testing, so fantasy managers will have to wait for more information.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts (back) exited Tuesday's 8-4 loss to the Rays with back spasms, per MLB.com's Ian Browne. Bogaerts went 0-for-3 with a strikeout before being replaced by Rob Refsnyder. It sounds like Bogaerts is day-to-day, as it was reported that he will not be in the lineup on Wednesday. His numbers haven't been bad with a .315/.382/.466 slash line, 12 home runs, 63 RBI and eight steals, but they also haven't been exactly what fantasy managers had hoped for in terms of counting stats. There is still time for Bogaerts to contribute, but fantasy managers should keep an eye out for when he will be back in the Red Sox's lineup.
Boston Red Sox outfielder J.D. Martinez (back) is expected to be in the lineup for Wednesday's series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays. According to Red Sox manager Alex Cora, Martinez was scratched earlier with back tightness but will be ready for Wednesday's contest. The 35-year-old had been solid before the injury, slashing .262./.311/.429 with two home runs, five RBI, and five runs across 45 plate appearances in his last 10 games. Fantasy managers should check back on Wednesday to ensure Martinez is starting before inserting him into their starting lineups. Stay tuned.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Boston Red Sox and utility man Enrique Hernandez reached a one-year, $10 million contract extension Monday, per ESPN's Jeff Passan. Hernandez had a strong 2021 season but has struggled this season, slashing .219/.283/.354 with six home runs and 37 RBI. This could partly be due to a hip-flexor injury, which caused him to miss more than two months. Hernandez was due to be a free agent at the end of this season, but his defensive flexibility (he has mostly played outfield in 2022) will remain with the Red Sox through 2023. Despite that position flexibility, Hernandez's lack of offensive production has limited his fantasy value this season.
Boston Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta (calf) tested his injured left calf with a bullpen session at Tropicana Field on Monday. As long as there are no ill effects from the side session, Pivetta will take his regular spot in the starting rotation on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays. The 29-year-old left his previous start early on Friday against the Texas Rangers with a left calf contusion when he was hit by a comebacker. In 27 starts for the Red Sox in 2022, Pivetta has gone 9-10 with a 4.37 ERA (4.13 FIP), a 1.33 WHIP, 145 strikeouts and 56 walks in 150 1/3 innings pitched. It looks like fantasy managers will have him available to them this week in the series finale against the Rays. He's the lone Boston pitcher this year to make off of his starts, and it looks like that won't change this week.
Boston Red Sox outfielder Franchy Cordero (ankle) jammed his right leg into the left field wall in the fifth inning of Monday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays and had to be carted off the field. The official diagnosis was a right ankle sprain. Skipper Alex Cora said Cordero will undergo an MRI exam on Tuesday to see if there's ligament damage. "In the beginning, it felt really bad, but as I was coming to the clubhouse it was feeling better," said Cordero. "At first, I felt it was something worse than it was." The 28-year-old went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts before departing, so it was a rough day for Cordero. He's unlikely to play on Tuesday, but it remains to be seen if he'll miss the rest of the season. With Triston Casas now on the major league roster, Cordero is unlikely to see regular playing time in Boston's outfield.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (shoulder) threw a bullpen session on Sept. 2, and the plan is for him to repeat the exercise at some point during a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays on either Tuesday or Wednesday. Boston thinks Eovaldi will pitch again this year, but manager Alex Cora said Eovaldi will need to go on a minor league rehab assignment first. The 32-year-old isn't progressing as quickly as the team had hoped when he initially landed on the injured list, but it looks like they'll get him back at some point this month. That won't help fantasy managers all that much, though, with time running out in the final month of the regular season. In 18 starts this year, Eovaldi has gone 5-3 with a 4.15 ERA (4.50 FIP), a 1.26 WHIP, 96 K's and 18 walks in 99 2/3 innings.
Boston Red Sox right-hander Kutter Crawford (shoulder) was scratched from his start on Sept. 4 and went on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement. He has gone 3-6 with a 5.47 ERA (4.34 FIP), a 1.42 WHIP, 77 strikeouts and 29 walks in 77 1/3 innings in 21 appearances (12 starts) in his first full major league season. The good news is the team expects him back soon. "We feel like he'll be right back as soon as he is eligible to come off the IL," said manager Alex Cora. Josh Winckowski took Crawford's start on Sunday, but it remains to be seen if Crawford will return to the starting rotation when he's activated from the injured list.

Boston Red Sox top prospect first baseman Triston Casas will be called up from Triple-A Worcester on Sunday. He was placed on the injured list on May 18 and missed a portion of the season with an ankle injury. The 22-year-old was activated from the injured list on July 12. Since returning from the IL, Casas is slashing .309/.416/.537 with six home runs, 19 RBI, and 26 runs across 178 plate appearances in 40 games. Bobby Dalbec will be optioned to Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move. Casas is expected to be Boston's starting first baseman for the rest of the season and is worth adding in league formats.

Boston Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta left his Friday start against the Texas Rangers with a left calf contusion. Pivetta allowed one run on four hits over three innings while striking out two and walking two before the injury. He suffered the injury while making a play in the field in the third inning and was replaced on the mound by Tyler Danish for the top of the fourth. After Friday's game, the Red Sox should give a clearer indication as to whether Pivetta will be able to make his next scheduled start, which is tentatively set for Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox right-handed pitcher Tanner Houck (back) is expected to have back surgery to repair a disc issue. Houck was expected to miss the rest of the 2022 season, but this news all but confirms that. Houck has been dealing with the issue since an IL stint in early August, and even when he was pitching he wasn't feeling right. The Red Sox closer pitched to a 3.15 ERA and 1.18 WHIP while recording eight saves. Expect Boston to continue going with a closer-by-committee approach, with Garrett Whitlock, John Schreiber, and Matt Barnes all getting opportunities down the stretch.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
The Boston Red Sox are shutting right-hander Tanner Houck (back) down now, and there's "a good chance" he'll miss the rest of the 2022 season, according to skipper Alex Cora. The team scratched Houck from his scheduled live batting practice session on Tuesday due to continued back soreness, and there's just not enough time left in the year for the 26-year-old to make it back, especially since the Red Sox are on the outside of the playoff picture. He went on the injured list on Aug. 9 with a disc issue in his back, and he continued to deal with soreness when he resumed throwing. If this is the end of the road for Houck in 2022, he'll finish with a 5-4 record, 3.15 ERA (3.31 FIP), a 1.18 WHIP, eight saves and a 56:22 K:BB in 60 innings over 32 appearances (four starts).
Boston Red Sox first baseman Eric Hosmer (back) has been shut down with lingering back pain. Hosmer went on the injured list with lower back inflammation just over a week ago, and now it's looking like he might miss the rest of the 2022 season. There's no timetable for when the 32-year-old left-handed hitter will resume baseball activities. If you are in need of a roster spot in deeper fantasy leagues, it's probably safe to drop Hosmer at this point. In 12 games since being acquired from the San Diego Padres at the Aug. 2 trade deadline, Hosmer has gone just 9-for-40 (.225) with no home runs, four RBI and six runs scored. Franchy Cordero and Bobby Dalbec will continue splitting playing time at first base with Hosmer sidelined.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (shoulder) threw a couple days ago, but he isn't progressing as quickly as the team had hoped. Eovaldi tossed a bullpen session on Monday and was preparing to face live hitters next, but the team will pump the brakes on that for now. The 32-year-old is running out of time to make much more of an impact for his fantasy managers, but there's still a little bit more time for him to be able to return down the stretch. In 18 starts for the BoSox in 2022, he's gone 5-3 with a 4.15 ERA (4.51 FIP), 1.26 WHIP, 96 strikeouts and 18 walks in 99 2/3 innings pitched. Fantasy managers should keep him stashed for now.

TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck (back) didn't throw live batting practice as scheduled Tuesday due to continued back soreness. He has been sidelined since August 9 with a disc issue in his back. The 26-year-old is "on hold" with continued back soreness. He has been solid this season, posting a 3.15 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with eight saves and 56 strikeouts in 60 innings pitched over 32 appearances (four starts). The right-hander is eligible to come off the 15-day injured list. Houck is hopeful to pitch again this season and is likely a few weeks away from returning to action. Fantasy managers with an open IL spot can continue to stash Houck on their roster.
Boston Red Sox pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (shoulder) threw another bullpen session Monday. He reportedly felt good after Monday's session and has thrown back-to-back successful bullpens. The 32-year-old has been sidelined since August 23 with shoulder inflammation. He will continue his throwing program this week and could begin a rehab assignment soon. The right-hander owns a 4.15 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 96 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings over 18 starts. Fantasy managers should continue to stash Eovaldi in all league formats.
Saturday, August 27
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story (wrist) is expected to return from the injured list on Saturday. That means, the right-hander slugger should be activated prior to Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The 29-year-old is working his way back from a fractured wrist. He appears ready to return, which is good news for fantasy managers. Sadly, Story has struggled throughout a majority of the season. He's hitting .221/.289/.423 with 15 homers, 58 RBI and 10 stolen bases through 81 games this season.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (shoulder) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session at Fenway Park on Friday. He was placed on the 15-day injured list on Aug. 23 with right shoulder inflammation after being scratched from his start on Aug. 18 with a sore trapezius muscle. Eovaldi last pitched on Aug. 12 against the New York Yankees, giving up two runs over six innings. The 32-year-old right-hander will likely throw another side session in the coming days, and skipper Alex Cora would like Eovaldi to make one minor league rehab start before he rejoins the starting rotation. Barring a setback, it looks like fantasy managers will get Eovaldi back sooner than later. He's gone 5-3 on the year with a 4.15 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 96 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings over 18 starts.
Boston Red Sox left-hander James Paxton (elbow, lat) suffered a Grade 2 left lat strain after he faced just two hitters in his first minor league rehab start on Aug. 18, and he won't pitch in the majors in 2022. Boston holds a dual option on Paxton for the 2023 and 2024 seasons worth $13 million per season, and Paxton holds a $4 million player option. The 33-year-old southpaw was already attempting to come back from Tommy John surgery, so this is just yet another setback. There's a good chance the Red Sox will move on at this point. Paxton made just one start for the Seattle Mariners in 2021 and made just five starts for the New York Yankees in 2020 due to injuries, so he could be looking at an abrupt end to his career if he can't get healthy again soon.
Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has been optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Saturday. The 25-year-old center fielder has struggled mightily this season, putting up a lackluster .220/.283/.365 triple-slash line to go along with three home runs, 17 RBI, and seven stolen bases over 200 at-bats. He'll try and rebuild his confidence in Triple-A as the Red Sox look to keep their shrinking playoff hopes alive without him. There's still some long-term upside here but Duran has a .218 batting average and .624 OPS in 307 career at-bats at the major league level.
Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story (wrist) has been activated from the 10-day injured list and is starting on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays. The 29-year-old infielder was out for over a month and a half with a hairline fracture in his right wrist. He'll try and jolt the struggling Red Sox back into playoff contention down the stretch. Story has had an underwhelming first season in Boston, slashing .221/.289/.423 with 15 home runs, 58 RBI, and 10 stolen bases over 307 at-bats. Despite his struggles, he should be re-inserted into fantasy lineups immediately.
Friday, August 26
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story (wrist) went 3-for-4 with a double, home run, two RBI and two runs scored while playing second base on Thursday in a minor league rehab game with Double-A Portland. In his second rehab game, he played seven innings at the keystone, and it looks like he's getting closer to rejoining the Red Sox. The 29-year-old will return to Boston on Friday for evaluation, but he's not expected to be activated from the injured list just yet. When he does return, Story will be coming back to a .221/.289/.423 slash line with 15 long balls, 58 RBI, 49 runs scored and 10 stolen bases in 307 at-bats in his first year in Beantown. Christian Arroyo has been hot at the plate this month and is seeing most of the starts at second base of late.
Thursday, August 25
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts (back) and outfielder Tommy Pham (back) are both back in the starting lineup on Thursday against Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman. Bogaerts is back at short and hitting cleanup, while Pham is in left field and batting leadoff. Both players left the game early on Tuesday with lower back spasms, but they're back in there against Toronto. Bogaerts hasn't hit well in August, but he's still slashing .298/.369/.439 with an .808 OPS, 10 long balls, 50 RBI, 66 runs scored and seven stolen bases in 433 at-bats this year. Pham has hit .267/.295/.493 with three homers, 13 RBI and 12 runs scored in 18 games since being acquired from the Cincinnati Reds at the trade deadline.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (shoulder) played catch on Wednesday and Thursday and might throw off a mound on Friday. He's progressing well since being placed on the injured list on Tuesday. The 32-year-old right-hander is recovering from right shoulder inflammation, which has kept him sidelined since Aug. 12. As of right now, it looks possible that he could return when eligible next weekend. Rookie Brayan Bello is filling Eovaldi's rotation spot for the time being. In 18 starts in 2022, Eovaldi has gone 5-3 with a 4.15 ERA (4.51 FIP), 1.26 WHIP, 96 strikeouts and 18 walks in 99 2/3 innings pitched. He should be stashed in the vast majority of fantasy leagues for the stretch run.
Wednesday, August 24
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox outfielder Tommy Pham (back) was removed from Tuesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays with lower-back spasms. Pham exited Tuesday's contest early after crashing into the Green Monster while attempting to make a play on a double from Jackie Bradley Jr. He missed last Saturday's game due to a back issue, and the injury flared up again on Tuesday. The 34-year-old went 0-for-2 before leaving. The severity of Pham's injury is unknown, and he is considered day-to-day. Rob Refsnyder replaced Pham in the third inning and could see an increase in playing time if the veteran is forced to miss any time.
Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts (back) exited Tuesday's 9-3 loss to the Blue Jays in the top of the seventh inning with back spasms, per Providence Journal's Bill Koch. Bogaerts went 0-for-2 with a walk before being replaced by Bobby Dalbec. The 29-year-old has had an up-and-down season while playing through pain in his left wrist and left shoulder, slashing .298/.369/.439 with 10 home runs, 50 RBI, and seven stolen bases. Bogaerts should be considered day-to-day, although he will not be in Wednesday's lineup.
Boston Red Sox pitcher Brayan Bello (groin) is expected to be activated from the injured list and start Wednesday's game for the Red Sox against the Blue Jays, per Providence Journal's Bill Koch. The 23-year-old has been recovering from a left groin strain since the beginning of August. Bello hasn't looked sharp in his first stint in the big leagues, compiling an 8.47 ERA and 2.29 WHIP in 17 innings pitched over five appearances. He still holds plenty of fantasy value in dynasty leagues, but fantasy managers should not put their trust in him this season, especially in his first start back in a tough matchup.
Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts (back) and outfielder Tommy Pham (back) will not play on Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Bogaerts left Tuesday's game early with mid-back spasms after going 0-for-2 with a walk. Meanwhile, Pham also left with back spasms in the same contest. It's unclear if either player will need a stint on the injured list, but for now, fantasy managers should consider them day-to-day. Pham also missed the game last Saturday, so his injury could be a bit more serious. Bogaerts is hitting a strong .298/.369/.439 with an .808 OPS, 10 home runs, 50 RBI, 66 runs scored and seven stolen bases and is a must-start whenever he's in the lineup. In 18 games with Boston, Pham has gone 20-for-75 (.267) with three homers, 13 RBI and 12 runs scored.
Tuesday, August 23
TEAMPLAYERTRANSACTION
Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts told reporters on Monday that he has been playing through pain in his left wrist and left shoulder ever since his collision with Alex Verdugo on May 20. Bogaerts went on to reveal that he has been getting cortisone shots and he thinks that he has had to readjust his swing mechanics to compensate for the pain. Of course, that could explain why Bogaerts has struggled mightily at the plate of late, hitting just .220 with one homer over his past 15 games. Bogaerts can become a free-agent after the season, so these struggles are not coming at an opportune time for him. On the year, the veteran shortstop is hitting .299 with 10 homers, 66 runs, 50 RBI, and seven steals.
The Boston Red Sox placed starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (shoulder) on the 15-day injured with right shoulder inflammation. The move was made retroactive to August 19. Eovaldi had previously started 18 games for Boston this season, throwing 99.2 innings and working to a 4.15 ERA and a 4.50 FIP while striking out 96 batters and allowing 18 walks. What's more, he has five pitcher wins in those 18 starts. Boston also placed first baseman Eric Hosmer on the 10-day injured list and recalled right-hander Josh Wincokowski and first baseman and outfielder Francy Cordero from Triple-A.
The Boston Red Sox placed first baseman Eric Hosmer (back) on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday and recalled outfielder Franchy Cordero from the minors in a corresponding move. Hosmer is dealing with lower back inflammation and won't be eligible to return to the team until Aug. 31. Since being dealt to Boston by the San Diego Padres at the Aug. 2 trade deadline, Hosmer has gone just 9-for-40 (.225) with no home runs, four RBI and six runs scored in 12 games. Overall, the 32-year-old veteran first baseman has hit .267/.333/.381 with eight home runs, 44 RBI and 38 runs scored in 414 plate appearances over 102 games in 2022. Bobby Dalbec will likely platoon with Cordero at the cold corner now that Hosmer is on the shelf.
Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Tanner Houck (back) is hopeful that he'll be able to pitch again this season. He said he's feeling much better after getting rest and didn't need an injection or surgery for the disc issue in his back. Houck has resumed playing catch over the last few games. The 26-year-old right-hander has been solid for the Red Sox this year with a 3.15 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, eight saves and 56 strikeouts in 60 innings pitched over 32 appearances (four starts). Because he could return to the closer role when he's ready in September, he's worth stashing in fantasy leagues. Until then, Garrett Whitlock and John Schreiber are the best bets for save opportunities in Boston's bullpen.
Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story (wrist) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on Wednesday. Story hasn't played in a game since July 12 due to renewed pain in his fractured right wrist. The 29-year-old could return to the Red Sox's lineup by this weekend, barring any setbacks. When he's ready, he'll return to a .221/.289/.423 slash line with 15 home runs, 58 RBI, 49 runs scored and 10 stolen bases in 307 at-bats in his first year in Beantown. Story should be stashed in all fantasy leagues at this time. Christian Arroyo has been handling everyday duties at the keystone of late for Boston, but he'll go back to a super-utility role for the Red Sox when Story returns to the team.

Boston Red Sox first baseman Eric Hosmer (back) is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. He was forced to exit early during Saturday's contest due to lower back tightness. It sounds like the Red Sox are going to play it safe and have Hosmer sit this one out. Bobby Dalbec will make the start at first base and bat eighth against right-hander Dean Kremer on Sunday night.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (neck) won't make his scheduled start against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday. The right-hander is reportedly not responding to treatment on his neck and shoulder soreness. He was scratched ahead of his start on Thursday and clearly isn't ready to pitch yet. There is a chance that Eovaldi lands on the injured list. The organization has not announced a starter for Tuesday, but it sounds like Eovaldi won't be taking the mound yet.

Boston Red Sox outfielder Tommy Pham left Friday's game against the Baltimore Orioles with tightness in his lower back. Pham was having a big night at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run, and three RBI. He was replaced in the lineup by Bobby Dalbec. Pham is hitting .244 with 14 homers, 69 runs, 52 RBI, and seven steals in 2022. Look for the Red Sox to update his injury status after Friday's game ends.
Boston Red Sox outfielder Tommy Pham (back) will not be in the lineup on Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles. Pham told reporters that his back "jammed up" on him and that he won't play on Saturday. The Red Sox have not officially released a lineup yet but it's safe to assume Pham won't be in there. He also mentioned that the IL is not an option so this sounds like a day-to-day situation for the 34-year-old. He's slashing .271/.292/.500 with three home runs and 12 RBI across 70 at-bats with Boston.

The Boston Red Sox reinstated left-hander Matt Strahm (wrist) from the 15-day injured list on Friday and optioned right-hander Josh Winckowski to Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move. Strahm missed over a month with a bruised left wrist after he was hit by a comebacker. Before his injury, the 30-year-old southpaw had a 3.58 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP and a 32:7 K:BB in 27 2/3 relief innings. Strahm also has three saves on the season, and he could be part of the team's closer-by-committee situation down the stretch along with names like Garrett Whitlock, John Schreiber and Matt Barnes.

Boston Red Sox right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (neck, shoulder) has been scratched from his scheduled start on Thursday against the Pittsburgh Pirates due to soreness in his neck and shoulder. In his place, rookie right-hander Josh Winckowski will get the start. Eovaldi still thinks he can pitch, so the injury doesn't appear to be very serious, but the Red Sox won't take any chances. The 32-year-old has been solid in his 18 starts for Boston in 2022, going 5-3 with a 4.15 ERA (4.50 FIP), 1.26 WHIP, 96 strikeouts and 18 walks in 99 2/3 innings pitched. Consider him day-to-day for now. Winckowski has gone 5-5 with a 4.69 ERA, a 1.49 WHIP and a 34:20 K:BB in 55 2/3 innings over 11 starts. He'll be in the streaming conversation on Thursday against the Bucs.
Boston Red Sox reliever Matt Strahm (wrist) will likely be activated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Friday's series opener versus the Baltimore Orioles, according to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. The 30-year-old lefty has been sidelined since taking a comebacker off his wrist on July 12. He made a rehab outing on Tuesday in Triple-A and retired all three batters he faced. Strahm will look to pick up right where he left off, which includes a 3.58 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and .248 OBA along with an impressive 10.41 K/9 and 2.28 BB/9.

Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts (shin) is back in the lineup on Wednesday for a matchup with the Pittsburgh Pirates and right-hander Roansy Contreras. Bogaerts is enjoying another quality season at the plate, batting .303 with a .373 on-base percentage, nine home runs and seven stolen bases in 466 plate appearances. He'll hit third for Boston on Wednesday against Contreras and the Pirates, with left fielder Tommy Pham hitting leadoff and third baseman Rafael Devers batting second.
