Bears Want To Bring Back David Montgomery
Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles spoke publicly about impending free agent David Montgomery, saying that he wants the running back to return. "I've always wanted to keep David," Poles said, via Alyssa Barbieri of Bears Wire. "I love his mentality, how he plays the game. I told him that to his face. He's part of the identity that we had this year that kept us competitive." Montgomery showed flashes of dominance in 2022 but was ultimately overshadowed by Justin Fields' elite rushing ability. Thus, if Montgomery and Fields both return in 2023, the former would likely rank as a low-end RB2 heading into fantasy drafts. The rise of No. 2 running back Khalil Herbert can't be ignored, either.

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery (illness) practiced in full on Friday and was removed from Friday's final injury report. He will play in Week 15 against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Montgomery and quarterback Justin Fields were sick earlier this week, but they're both fine now and will be active this weekend. The 25-year-old Montgomery could have to contend with Khalil Herbert in the backfield in Week 16 if he returns from Injured Reserve, so this could be his last game with the backfield all to himself. Montgomery scored his second rushing touchdown in the last three games last week, but fantasy managers may want to temper expectations in Week 15 in a game in which the Bears could be forced to abandon the run quickly. Montgomery will be more of a low-end RB2.

On one hand, their roles are uncertain, but at the same time, Chicago has one of the best rushing attacks in the NFL. Both Montgomery and Herbert are fringe top-24 options in fantasy football this week.

Montgomery got in limited practice sessions each of the last two days, so he certainly has a chance to play this weekend after missing the Week 4 loss to the New York Giants. Khalil Herbert has looked good the last two weeks with Montgomery hurting, though, so even if Montgomery is active, he could be looking at fewer snaps for fantasy managers. In his three games this season, Montgomery has 35 carries for 159 yards (career-high 4.5 yards per carry), adding five receptions for an additional 38 yards. He should be looked at as a very shaky flex play if he's active against Minnesota.
