  • Bears Want To Bring Back David Montgomery

Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles spoke publicly about impending free agent David Montgomery, saying that he wants the running back to return. "I've always wanted to keep David," Poles said, via Alyssa Barbieri of Bears Wire. "I love his mentality, how he plays the game. I told him that to his face. He's part of the identity that we had this year that kept us competitive." Montgomery showed flashes of dominance in 2022 but was ultimately overshadowed by Justin Fields' elite rushing ability. Thus, if Montgomery and Fields both return in 2023, the former would likely rank as a low-end RB2 heading into fantasy drafts. The rise of No. 2 running back Khalil Herbert can't be ignored, either.

  • David Montgomery Will Play Against Eagles

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery (illness) practiced in full on Friday and was removed from Friday's final injury report. He will play in Week 15 against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Montgomery and quarterback Justin Fields were sick earlier this week, but they're both fine now and will be active this weekend. The 25-year-old Montgomery could have to contend with Khalil Herbert in the backfield in Week 16 if he returns from Injured Reserve, so this could be his last game with the backfield all to himself. Montgomery scored his second rushing touchdown in the last three games last week, but fantasy managers may want to temper expectations in Week 15 in a game in which the Bears could be forced to abandon the run quickly. Montgomery will be more of a low-end RB2.

  • David Montgomery Misses Thursday's Practice

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery (illness) was unavailable for Thursday's practice. It sounds like the 25-year-old was dealing with a non-COVID related illness. He missed practice here, but the expectation is that he'll suit up for the Week 15 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Bears are going to need run the ball to have success in this game, so hopefully Montgomery is good to go. Fantasy managers will have to check back on Friday for another update on Montgomery.

  • David Montgomery Officially Active Sunday

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery (knee, ankle) is officially active against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 5. The 25-year-old exited early in Week 3 and missed all of last Sunday's contest. His return adds reinforcement to an already strong Bears rushing attack. Fantasy managers should expect the Bears to utilize some sort of split backfield with both Montgomery and Khalil Herbert this Sunday. Both backs project as low-end RB2 options.

  • David Montgomery Trending Towards Playing In Week 5

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery (ankle, knee) is trending toward playing on Sunday. Dan Graziano of ESPN.com reports that the team is "optimistic" he'll suit up versus the Minnesota Vikings. Even if Montgomery, who is listed as questionable, does play, there is a chance that he sees a reduced workload. Between his lingering injury and the recent success of Khalil Herbert, don't be surprised if the Bears alternate between using both backs. On one hand, their roles are uncertain, but at the same time, Chicago has one of the best rushing attacks in the NFL. Both Montgomery and Herbert are fringe top-24 options in fantasy football this week.

  • David Montgomery Listed As Questionable

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery (ankle) is officially listed as questionable to play in the Week 5 contest against the Minnesota Vikings. Montgomery got in limited practice sessions each of the last two days, so he certainly has a chance to play this weekend after missing the Week 4 loss to the New York Giants. Khalil Herbert has looked good the last two weeks with Montgomery hurting, though, so even if Montgomery is active, he could be looking at fewer snaps for fantasy managers. In his three games this season, Montgomery has 35 carries for 159 yards (career-high 4.5 yards per carry), adding five receptions for an additional 38 yards. He should be looked at as a very shaky flex play if he's active against Minnesota.

  • David Montgomery Limited During Thursday's Practice

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery (ankle) was limited during Thursday's practice, which is actually a good sign. This was the first time that Montgomery has been able to practice all week. The fact he was limited gives him a chance of suiting up for the Week 5 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. Montgomery injured his ankle in Week 3 and this was his first practice since then. Fantasy managers will have to check back on Friday to see if he can get through another practice without any issues.

  • David Montgomery Doesn't Practice Wednesday

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery (ankle) was a non-participant in Wednesday's practice. He missed practice last week and was eventually ruled out for Week 4 against the New York Giants. The 25-year-old will have two more chances to practice determining his status for Week 5 against the Minnesota Vikings. Montgomery remains day-to-day. Khalil Herbert will be the lead Bear's lead back if Montgomery is ruled out. Herbert rushed 19 times for 77 yards and caught his only target for 24 yards in last Sunday's 20-12 loss to the Giants.

  • David Montgomery Ruled Out Against Giants

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery (ankle, knee) has been ruled out for the team's Week 4 meeting with the Giants. Montgomery exited Week 3 early after an awkward tackle, which paved the way for Khalil Herbert to go off with 20 carries for 157 yards and two touchdowns. With Montgomery sidelined, Herbert enters borderline must-start territory this week as he should be very busy in the Bears' run-heavy offense. In four starts last season, Herbert averaged 19.5 carries for 86 yards, making him a high-end RB2 this week.

  • David Montgomery Sits Out Thursday

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery (ankle, knee) was unable to suit up for Thursday's practice. The organization is calling Montgomery day-to-day, but he's missed back-to-back practices. There seems to be a good chance of Khalil Herbert getting the start in Week 4. He rushed for 157 yards and two scores on 20 carries last week. Herbert would be in the RB2 discussion, assuming he starts against the New York Giants in Week 4.

  • David Montgomery Misses Practice Wednesday

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery (ankle, knee) did not practice with the team on Wednesday after sustaining an injury early in Week 3. Head coach Matt Eberflus referred to Montgomery's status as "day-to-day", and his availability for Week 4 seems to be highly questionable. Khalil Herbert went off for 157 rushing yards and two touchdowns in Montgomery's absence last week and would likely see a large workload if he is sidelined on Sunday. The Bears have an enticing matchup against the New York Giants, so fantasy managers should pay close attention to practice reports throughout the week as either back would project as a solid RB2.

  • David Montgomery Considered Day-To-Day

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery (ankle, knee) is considered day-to-day, according to head coach Matt Eberflus. The 25-year-old had only three carries for 11 yards on Sunday against the Texans before doing down, opening the door for Khalil Herbert to receive 20 touches for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Fantasy managers should consider Montgomery as questionable moving toward the Week 4 matchup against the New York Giants. However, Montgomery was already fighting to remain ahead of Herbert on the depth chart, so he may cede work even if he's available.

  • David Montgomery Officially Doubtful To Return

Updating a previous report, Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery (ankle, knee) is doubtful to return in Week 3 against the Houston Texans. He exited after tallying 11 rushing yards. Montgomery was taken from the medical tent to the locker room and is now unlikely to return to the contest. Khalil Herbert will operate as the Bears' lead back in Montgomery's absence.

  • David Montgomery Heads To Locker Room In Week 3

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery (leg) was taken to the locker room during the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Houston Texans. He exited after tallying 11 rushing yards. The injury looked concerning, and the fact that Montgomery was taken from the medical tent to the locker room is not a great sign. As long as Montgomery is sidelined, Khalil Herbert will handle lead-back duties for Chicago.
