Giants RB Saquon Barkley to open camp on PUP list

San Barkley will open New York Giants training camp on the physically unable to perform list as he continues to rehab from a torn ACL. Barkley was one of six players the Giants placed on the active/PUP list Thursday. The team's first full-squad training camp practice is next Wednesday. Barkley tore the ACL last September during Week 2 of the 2020 season. He told the New York Post this week he didn't know when he would be medically cleared to return to practice. "Yeah, I've been asked a lot," Barkley said. "I guess that's the theme of the summer, going to be when I'll be back. But no, I don't have that answer, to be honest. ... It's a fun process, but it's a tough process at the same time. Just have to continue to listen to my body, listen to my trainers, listen to the coaches and take it day-by-day." The No. 2 overall draft pick in 2018, Barkley won Offensive Rookie of the Year that season but has struggled to stay healthy since. In 31 games over three seasons, Barkley has amassed 2,344 rushing yards for 17 touchdowns on 4.7 yards per attempt, plus 149 receptions for 1,219 yards and six scores. New York picked up Barkley's fifth-year option for the 2022 season, guaranteeing him $7.217 million. Newly-signed tight end Kyle Rudolph (foot), third-round draft pick and cornerback Aaron Robinson (core muscle), center Jonotthan Harrison (hamstring), tackle Matt Peart (back) and linebacker Oshane Ximines (hamstring) were also placed on the active/PUP list. In addition, first-round wide receiver Kadarius Toney was placed on the COVID-19/reserve list because of a positive test. The rookie was the Giants' No. 20 overall pick in April's draft. --Field Level Media
