Gabriel Moreno, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Heading To Arizona
The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired catching prospect Gabriel Moreno and outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. from the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday in exchange for catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho, according to sources. Moreno is a consensus top-10 prospect in all of baseball, and he has elite bat-to-ball skills and a huge arm as a defender. The 22-year-old backstop has All-Star potential in his future. He made his big-league debut in 2022 and hit a strong .319/.356/.377 in just 73 plate appearances. Moreno will split time with Carson Kelly in Arizona, but he should become Arizona's primary catcher sooner than later. Gurriel, 29, dealt with a wrist injury that sapped his power (five home runs in 2022), but he could bounce back with better health in 2023. He should be a regular for Arizona moving forward, but the move to the National League West club is a downgrade from a fantasy perspective.

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (wrist) dealt with left wrist issues this year and underwent successful surgery on the wrist on Thursday with Dr. Graham in Ohio. Gurriel is expected to be ready for spring training next year. The 29-year-old Cuban outfielder missed the final month of the season due to a left hamstring strain and was left off the roster for the Wild-Card Series loss to the Seattle Mariners. Gurriel finished his 2022 season by hitting a strong .291/.343/.400 with five home runs, 52 RBI, 52 runs scored and three stolen bases in 493 plate appearances over 121 games. His five homers were the fewest in his fifth major league season, but perhaps his lingering wrist issue was to blame for the lack of pop.

Gurriel was injured while hustling out a potential double play ball, as he landed on the bag awkwardly and went down in a heap. The team has chosen to put him on the injured list after Gurriel went for an MRI Thursday, which gives them an extra roster spot in a crucial part of their season. Hopefully the IL stint is a short one, but no timeline has been given. After a scorching June and July, Gurriel slumped hard in August, slashing just .225/.269/.304. It's certainly worth considering dropping Gurriel if you don't have any extra IL spots for him, as he likely won't see the field at all next week. Expect Raimel Tapia, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Whit Merrifield to see more time in the outfield with Gurriel on the IL.
