LHP Drew Smyly reaches two-year deal with Cubs

Left-hander Drew Smyly agreed to a two-year contract to remain with the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Financial terms were not disclosed by the Cubs, however multiple media outlets reported the deal was worth a total of $19 million and has a mutual option for the 2025 season. Smyly, 33, was 7-8 with a 3.47 ERA in 22 starts in his first season with the Cubs in 2022. He is 53-47 with a 4.10 ERA and 922 strikeouts in 239 games (156 starts) over nine seasons with seven teams. Smyly was a second-round pick by the Detroit Tigers in 2010 and won a World Series with the Atlanta Braves in 2021. To make room for Smyly on the 40-man roster, right-hander Erich Uelmen was designated for assignment. --Field Level Media
