Nationals sign 3B Jeimer Candelario
The Washington Nationals signed third baseman Jeimer Candelario to a one-year contract on Tuesday. Candelario, who turned 29 last week, batted .217 with a .633 OPS, 13 homers and 50 RBIs in 124 games with the Detroit Tigers in 2022. It was a steep decline from the previous season, when he led the majors with 42 doubles and drove in a career-high 67 runs in 149 games for Detroit. Candelario is a career .240/.322/.401 hitter with 66 homers, 126 doubles and 248 RBIs in 606 games for the Chicago Cubs (2016-17) and Tigers. The switch-hitter has also started games at first base and designated hitter. The team did not disclose financials. Per reports, however, Candelario will earn $5 million plus up to $1 million in performance bonuses with Washington. Candelario earned $5.8 million after arbitration last season. The Nats also agreed to Major League contract with outfielder Stone Garrett, who hit .276 with four homers and 13 runs in 27 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2022. The 27-year-old made his major league debut on Aug. 17 against San Francisco. --Field Level Media
