Ex-skipper Charlie Montoyo named White Sox bench coach
Former Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo was named bench coach for the Chicago White Sox and new skipper Pedro Grifol on Tuesday. Montoyo, 57, was fired by the Blue Jays in July after three-plus seasons at the helm. He went 236-236. Montoyo was previously a bench coach in 2018 for Tampa Bay, one of his 22 seasons with the Rays' organization. Montoyo is one of five new coaches to join the White Sox ahead of the 2023 season. Jose Castro (hitting coach), Eddie Rodriguez (third base coach), Mike Tosar (major league field coordinator) and Geoff Head (senior director of sports performance) are also new for this year. Daryl Boston (first base coach), Ethan Katz (pitching coach) and Curt Hasler (bullpen coach) were kept on from former manager Tony La Russa's staff. Katz returns for his third season as White Sox pitching coach. Assistant hitting coach Chris Johnson was promoted from Triple-A Charlotte. The White Sox hired Grifol on Nov. 3 to replace La Russa, who missed the final 34 games of this past season because of health issues. It's Grifol's first stint as a big league manager. Grifol had served as a coach in the Royals organization since 2013. --Field Level Media
