Mets activate Pete Alonso, Kevin Pillar, Seth Lugo from IL
The New York Mets activated first baseman Pete Alonso, center fielder Kevin Pillar and pitcher Seth Lugo from the injured list Monday. Pillar is back just two weeks after taking a 94 mph fastball to the face May 17. Pillar underwent surgery for multiple nasal fractures. Alonso was placed on the IL May 18 with a right wrist sprain. Lugo, the Mets' setup man, has yet to make his 2021 debut after requiring offseason elbow surgery. The Mets also added outfielder Mason Williams to the active roster. To make room for the slew of additions, New York designated Cameron Maybin and Sam McWilliams for assignment, and optioned Khalil Lee, Patrick Mazeika and Sean Reid-Foley to Triple-A Syracuse. Alonso, the former Rookie of the Year who led the majors with 53 home runs in 2019, is batting .236 with six home runs and 19 RBIs in 36 games this season. Pillar, a nine-year veteran, owns a .250 batting average with a pair of homers and eight RBIs to go with 10 runs scored in his 28 appearances this year. Prior to these moves, the Mets had 17 players on the injured list, most in the majors. --Field Level Media
