Born on September 20, 1990, John Tavares is a Canadian professional ice hockey player and the captain of the National Hockey League’s Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL). The New York Islanders, with whom he played nine seasons and captained for five, picked him first overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.<\/p>\n

He was selected for the 2014 Canadian Olympic Hockey Team on January 7, 2014, and went on to earn a gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics despite being unable to play in the last two games due to an injury.<\/p>\n
