As the Astros kick off the season on Thursday, Julks and Salazar are making their Major League debuts, and Diaz is on his first Opening Day squad.<\/p>\n<p>The Astros weren&#8217;t prepared for some position-player vacancies because All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve (fractured right thumb) and outfielder Michael Brantley (right shoulder surgery) were expected to begin the season on the disabled list. Julks, a University of Houston product selected in the eighth round of the 2017 draught, launched 31 home rockets and drove in 89 runs last season at Triple-A, putting up statistics the Astros couldn&#8217;t ignore. Dirden has very little expertise in Triple-A baseball and will gain the necessary knowledge at Sugar Land.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Designated hitter (1): Yordan Alvarez &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>Alvarez began swinging a bat only last week after reporting to camp with a sore hand and had only a handful of at-bats in Grapefruit League play.
