Brewers place Christian Yelich on 10-day IL

Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell announced Saturday the team has placed outfielder Christian Yelich on the 10-day injured list due to Yelich’s sore back.

The 2018 National League MVP and 2019 runner-up has missed Milwaukee’s past four games and has not shown improvement. The move is retroactive to April 14.

“We ramped it up yesterday but we didn’t go forward today,” Counsell said. “That was a sign that we just needed to slow down.

“So we’ll do that, take a couple more days without baseball activities and see where that leads us.”

Counsell said he didn’t think Yelich would miss much more than the 10 days coming up.

Yelich has a career slash line of .296/.382/.487 with 151 homers and 523 RBIs in 987 games.

He is hitting .333 this season with no home runs and one RBI in nine games.

Milwaukee already has Lorenzo Cain and Kolten Wong on the IL.

The Brewers entered Saturday 7-6, trailing first-place Cincinnati by one game in the National League Central. They seek a rebound from Friday’s 6-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, hosting the Pirates again on Saturday in the second of a three-game set.
