Braves’ Ronald Acuna Jr. nursing abdominal injury

Atlanta Braves right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. will be re-examined Monday in New York after leaving Sunday’s blowout victory over the Chicago Cubs with an abdominal injury.

Acuna, who is off to a torrid pace with seven home runs and a .419 batting average through his first 16 games, was on base in the fourth inning when he was visited by a member of the Braves’ medical staff. He stayed in the game to run the bases and scored a run, but left when the Braves took the field in the bottom of the fourth. He was replaced in the lineup by Johan Carmargo, who played second base, with Ehire Adrianza moving from second to right field.

According to Braves manager Brian Snitker, Acuna was dealing with something in his “belly.” Acuna might have injured himself diving back to first base on a pickoff attempt.

Atlanta was just fine without Acuna’s bat for more than half of the game. The Braves hit four first-inning home runs and rolled to a 13-4 victory over the Cubs. Atlanta opens a two-game road series against the New York Yankees on Tuesday.
